The Time Hunters and the Box of Eternity: Book 2 of the Time Hunters Saga Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 1,476 ratings

The second book in the bestselling time travel adventure series for all ages. Perfect for fans of Harry Potter, Hunt for the Golden Scarab, Percy Jackson, Skandar, and Doctor Who.

Becky and Joe Mellor return to Bowen Hall for the half term holidays to find things are as unusual as ever. Of course, that's to be expected when you're sharing a stately home with a dinosaur, a winged horse, two sabre-tooth tigers, Will Scarlet, and Bowen Hall's latest resident—a dodo named Deirdre.

Things, however, get more intriguing when American time traveller, Bruce Westbrook, arrives with two gold doubloons that seem to possess strange, supernatural powers.

So begins a thrilling adventure that leads Becky, Joe, Uncle Percy and Will to 1920s Chicago, Victorian Edinburgh and the 18th Century Caribbean—battling gangsters, pirates, sea-monsters, and zombie sharks on a quest for the legendary Pandora's Box.

The clock is still ticking.

A very quick read with lots of adventure. If you like pirates and that kind of adventure then this book is for you. Love the fact that Blackbeard's treasure was used to make hospitals for injured sailors. What a fun read. Can't wait to read the next book in the series.

Author Carl Ashmore has another hit on his hands with his second book in the Time Hunters acclaimed series. While it is aimed at "children of all ages" adults who enjoy the fantasy of time travel will have fun reading this book as well. The main characters, siblings Joe and Becky, are older and maturing in a way that rings true. Familar characters, including Uncle Percy, Will, and Otto Kruger are also an important part of this swashbuckling tale, and we get the opportunity to meet some new members of the time traveling community, as well as Chicago mobsters, a famous serial killer, a rum-drinking parrot, and a variety of pirates, including "Windy Pete McGuinnes" "Hairy Harry Hooper" and "One Toe Tom," all from the pirate ship "The Black Head." The language is rich and humorous, and the author effectively employs the technique of ending one chapter in a way that pulls you right into the upcoming action, so that you won't want to put the book down.

For those who have not read the first book in the series, it is possible to enjoy the action and follow the plot, but for your full appreciation of this epic adventure, it is best if you read them in order. I am in awe of how the author manages to interweave the elements of this adventure throughout the two books, without leading to confusion or slowing the pace. While the tale is ongoing, each book has a resolution that is satisfying to the reader. Both books are priced so low that they are a steal. These books will also hold up to the test of time. Prior to reading The Box of Eternity, I reread The Time Hunters book 1, and enjoyed it at least as much as I did the first time. I eagerly look forward to the third installment of this wonderful adventure. Meanwhile, I have been inspired to take some time to learn more about the history of famous pirates, such as Blackbeard.

I gave this book for stars. I found the Uncle character to. He delightful and entertaining. The brother and sister are well developed characters who don't always get along, but do love each other.
I find the name calling between brother and sister slightly over the top but not excessive. I loved the adventure aspect of the books.
I did find book two a little violent. I would recommend this book for the preteen to early teen age . It may be too intense for anyone younger than eleven depending on the child. It would probably appeal to boys more than girls although there is a strong female character. I will try the 3 book.

Excellently paced and completely worthy successor to Time Hunters 1. We see the kids mature and grow up fast, as kids tend to do when approaching adolescence. The bond between the main protagonists, Uncle Percy, Becky, Joe and Will, deepens as they continue on their adventures travelling through time. We see an introduction of some loveable new characters (and some diabolical characters). As with Time Hunters 1 we see the amazing blending of historical fact and imaginative fantasy. Towards the end I was thinking "how are we going to get out of this one" and "please, don't leave us with a cliff-hanger". A highly satisfying ending that tied up all of the strands developed throughout this wonderful romping adventure. The characters are beautifully drawn, there is a balance between fun and real human drama, the plotting is meticulous and ingenious. While reading this book you'll chuckle and you'll tear up and you'll have to read just one more chapter. As Bob, the "female impersonator" in Blackadder Goes Forth says: "always leave them wanting more" and that's exactly what the author does. Now we have to wait for Time Hunters 3. Spewing (as kids used to say in Australia).

Oh yeah, and also kids might like this book.

Mc's are two kids just starting teens years. They time travel meeting historical and mystical characters. Both help save the day using courage and quick thinking.

Cant really remember any cuss words. There is violence, but on the part of the mc's its either defence or justice, not glorified just necessary

Don't get me wrong-I enjoyed the book. Pretty much read it straight through.
But it just didn't hold my attention as much as the 1st. Not even sure why.
The characters, the world building, the drama, is all there. But it just seemed to be at a different pace than the 1st one.
Maybe I just need to take a break in between the books in the series. Especially considering how long the series is.
I still think it has great growth and potential. Well just have to wait and see how book 3 develops.

I really, really enjoyed this book - the story is fun, the characters are well-developed and there is tons of action and surprises.

I am, however, a little put off at the lack of editing and the fact that it claims to be for "children of all ages" when it contains a somewhat scary scene with Jack the Ripper and Bruce alluding to sex with a nurse. Not quite what I'd like for my children to be reading - and very disappointing as it's totally not necessary for the story and could've been left out/edited to make it very much a great read for kids.

I do hope to see more sequels in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent imaginative sequel
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 11, 2012
This is a very entertaining and fast moving sequel. With expositions out of the way in the first book, its full throttle from word go in this one. There are pauses for breath but not too many. The villains are delightfully evil creating a sense of foreboding danger throughout the story. The adventures of the 2 children and their eccentric Uncle (who is both a time traveller and inventor) are imaginative and thrilling. There is an underlying story arc throughout the series and this adventure directly relates to it. What I find extremely fun in this instalment is the multiple historical and mythical legends the author has thrown into this concoction. It is a very eclectic mix and even crosses genres. I wont name them because part of the fun is discovering each legend as they continue on their quest.

I have just one small gripe. I feel there is a tad too many modern pop culture references thrown in for the sake of identifying the time the children belong, it takes me out of the immersion in the story.

This is quite a frantic page turner and very much a rollicking children's read but parents take note that there is a slight shade of descriptive gore, otherwise its good scary fun for the children and young adults. Adults will equally enjoy reading this too but there is a distinct child lock on the narrative. So its all kept nice and innocent at the same time.

I very much look forward to the release of the next instalment.

3 1/2 stars. I didn’t enjoy this as much as the first book in the series. It was darker and somehow less magical. But it’s still a good adventure and I recommend the series to readers young and old.

5.0 out of 5 stars story telling at its best
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 4, 2012
Well, what can I add to what all other reviewers have said? In my house, we are Time Hunters aficionados. We have them on Kindle, and as paperbacks. And, if they were in audio form, we would get them too. My children love them. As for me, what I love about Time Hunters and Time Hunters and the Box of Eternity is that they are wonderful stories to be told around a camp fire, when night has fallen and bellies are full, everyone is relaxing. And it is time for story telling. Time Hunters have got the right amount of spookiness without being spooky, the right amount of suspense and the right amount of humour. Becky and Joe are portrayed very well, they are two well raised teenagers, but do not think they are goodies goodies. Nope, they are full of cheekiness and it is what makes them so realistic. Uncle Percy as the mad inventor is not that mad that he likes to make you think. Will, Maria, Jacob & Barbie (the robot) are wonderful sidekicks. Not to forget Millie & Sabian, the sabretooth cats, Peggie the winged horse rescued from Ancient Greece, Gump the triceratops and Deirdre the dodo.
Other reviewers have outlined the plot, so, I will not go back on it. It suffice to say that all the 5 stars reviews are well deserved, in my humble opinion. Time Hunters books are indeed for young and young at heart. I hope there will be more of them, but I guess these two books will be a hard act to follow. I also hope that they will made into films (that we can add to our collection)
n.b. I read aloud Time Hunters to my 7 year old who has Autism and he loves it. And he is fussy about books (he prefers picture books as it is easier for him to read) but he said that 'it is as good as Scooby-Doo'. Sorry Mr Ashmore, but this is indeed a compliment.

Book 2 of the Time Hunters series, and another cracking story. OK, it's meant for early teenagers really, but if reading them makes sound like one of them, well, I really don't care! Tomorrow I be looking for book 3.
