The Orah Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 14 ratings

Liz wished she could go back and do it all again.
After all, it was Liz’s fault her mom was dead…or so she believed. Had Liz not delayed her, her mom never would have been killed by that car. And as the twentieth anniversary of her mother’s death came around, Liz could not help but wish it had been her instead. That is, until a gentlemen sits next to her on the park bench. He tells her his story, and she feels strangely compelled to tell him hers, but when he leaves her his pocket watch as a gift, she cannot believe what is happening. Only this isn’t just any watch, as she soon discovers, and she is pulled back in time.
Are events coincidental, even random? Or is there a perfectly timed symmetry yet to be lived? The possessor of the Orah is the only one to know.

This was a very enjoyable short story. I was a little confused at some details, but it didn't hinder my enjoyment.

I received this book for an honest review. It was a very quick read, and I did enjoy it, although for me it was somewhat predictable in parts. I liked the time twist used.

Canadian author E.H. James is a prolific writer of short stories – stories that test the imagination and call forth ghost like thoughts of the dark world about which we know very little. James is part of that conundrum as there is no biographical information on this gifted author as though that is meant to be part of the mysteries presented. We learn that she has read and researched in the areas of parapsychology and metaphysics, for the past 40 years, and has woven the real and imaginary together into stories of the strange and bizarre. The fruits of her labor show!

James’ mastery of the short story is obvious to those readers fortunate to have been introduced to her craft. In a matter a few pages she is able to conjure an atmosphere that challenges the reader’s courage to enter past the initial page, and the manner in which she quickly sketches lifelike characters and draws us into their interactions with the challenges they encounter is masterful.

THE ORAH is a very strong story, less focused on terror and horror that James’ other stories but one that is riveting in the manner in which she admixes coincidences with common day occurrences. And she always offers us something to learn – a bit of new information to enhance both our minds and our involvement in her stories. In this case it is the title of this story THE ORAH - ‘The Orah is the time keeper of humankind. Within it is contained every day known to man, those already lived, and yet to be lived.’

And as James explains in the synopsis ‘: Liz wished she could go back and do it all again. The possessor of the Orah is the only one to know.’

And for the tension to work, read it yourself. Only twenty-one pages but that is plenty of time for the goose bumps to rise. James knows this territory well. Grady Harp, November 17

Liz has so much to consider. Her life, her mother's death, her beloved grandfather—all of it comes crashing down upon her in the blink of an eye, pulling her further beneath the suffocating waves. Deep inside, she wishes things were different. She soon imagines what it would be like to have her mother in her life again. Things take an unexpected turn when she meets a gentleman at the park. The two of them engage in lively conversation, never once imagining how much their lives would change from that moment on.

    E. H. has written quite an interesting story. What if you could go back in time? What if you could change certain circumstances in your life? Would you take the leap? Could you live with the outcome of the decisions you've taken?

All of these questions are interspersed within the story the author has written. She utilizes the characters to answer them in such a way that you find yourself turning the page to see what happens next. I enjoyed the paranormal feel to this story. Granted, this book not like the author's usual writing tropes. This is a story all its own, one that leaves you guessing at every turn.

I love this author! Never stops to make me read more!

The short stories of E.H.JAMES are amazing...

This story we follow Liz and meets Gus and their story unfold pretty easily. At the beginning, I was pretty confused because I couldn't connect the dots, but that's a good thing because when you reading a short story you need to have the suspense thing going on! Well, score you are in the right place just go ahead and get yourself a copy if you like short stories that never disappoint you and this one has a little more. Can't tell I don't want to spoil the story!

Ever wonder what it would be like if you could go back and change a moment in your life? We’ve all thought about it at least once.

This story was about one of those what if’s. A unique story and pretty good characters. It’s a lovely story and it was over much too soon. I give this 4 stars.

Wow what a powerful short story. The author has done an incredible job at packing in so much information in a short story. I was captivated by the story line. I really enjoyed it and hope there will be more on the family and what it is they are destined to do with the Orah. Elizabeth's emotions are believable and I love the touch of comedy in her behavior. Gus was an interesting character and the plot was fun. I liked how the time line changed and the pocket watch or Orah lead Liz in the right direction so that things could be set right.

This is a great short story on how intertwining the lines of time can be. How one thing happens and can affect the others.

Elizabeth is sitting on a park bench thinking of her mother and how they would spend her birthday together each year, when an older gentleman comes and sits down beside her. They began to talk and her hands her an old pocket watch. The watch is a catalyst and both their lives are forever changed.

A great short read for those who love time travel or "Twilight Zone" fans.
