- Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2021You're reading the reviews because you're on the fence - let me help - BUY THIS BOOK! I discovered this gaming book series via a random advertisement, and I'm so glad I gave it a shot. I have played Tome of Terror with my gaming teenagers and with a group of my third-grade students at school. It's scary enough for the teenagers, but not too scary for my little ones - a perfect blend of humor and suspense. The game plays like a delightful combination of Choose Your Own Adventure books and fantasy role play. Easy to get into, easy to navigate, but complex enough to be interesting for gamers. I asked my students to write reviews, and they said. . .
"This is the most fun with reading you'll ever get to have! I love that I get to make my own character and explore a different world."
"This game is good because it's not too easy, but not too hard. I like meeting all of the different characters and battling the creatures."
"If you like exploring strange worlds that are a little scary, you will love this game! The maps are really fun to explore, and you get to make your own choices at each location. I like that you get to solve problems and have adventures as a group!"
- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2023Amazing gamebook! The voiceover work is impeccable, with sounds effects as well. Really makes for an immersive experience.
There are four stories, each with branching storylines, making for a lot of game in a small package.
For those with a digital preference, I took a picture of the map on my iPad, and used Markup to draw on the resulting photo. You can use the same device for the voiceover stuff if you like (powered by the SoundCloud app), but I used a second device, outputting the audio to a Bluetooth speaker.
It truly is much more than the CYOA books of yore. You will not be disappointed
- Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2022This RPG-style choose-your-own-adventure is a lot of fun and done in a really cool way with QR Codes to listen to audio recordings that fit the different parts of the book. Backed this on Kickstarter too, picked up the cards to go with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great gamebook, ots of fun
I recently purchased this book after watching a live play through on Olly McNeil's YouTube channel and was instantly hooked. I also played this with a small group of friends who loved it as well. The very quick setup and easy rules make for a great beginner friendly experience. I am a big gamebook fan and this probably the best multiplayer implementation I have come across so far. Due to random nature of the map generation or the multiple pre-generated maps being available online as well as the multiple quest options give this books plenty of replay value.

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing experience
Part RPG, part board game, part gamebook, The Storymaster’s Tales are unlike anything you’ve tried before. They are immersive and beginner-friendly, while being relatively challenging at the same time. If you are even remotely interested in narrative board games, RPG or gamebooks, you absolutely have to try them!
The Tome of Terror switch the usual 17th century folklore of the other Storymaster’s books for a 19th century gothic horror setting. As a fan of Dracula and more modern gothic fiction like Bloodborne, I absolutely loved this change of scenery, and every page perfectly nailed the gothic horror feel. However, if you are playing with children, do not worry, the horror elements are pretty family-friendly.
5 stars for me, and I cannot wait to go back to Transylvania!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story, great game.
Tome of Terror provides a great back drop story to an enjoyable game.
In a break away from the Storymaster's Tales, Tome of Terror ramps up the danger and the horror.
The books are well thought out and easy to pick up and play alone, as a family or group of friends.
There are also soundscapes that will read out passages of the story and set an atmosphere that adds to the immersion.
I can not praise this book enough (and others from this author).

4.0 out of 5 stars Are you scared?
This is a mix between a gamebook and an RPG. Fun to play with your friends and family but also engaging in solo modo. The audio feature it's a must.
