The Traitor and the Fighter: (Seeking Asylum Book 2) Kindle Edition
I’d sworn I’d never be part of the Chromes gang again or let Sawyer, their leader, control me once more. Yet an impossible choice has me returning to the crime-ridden city of Asylum, where I’m faced with James, the man I was hoping never to see again.
I’ve always thought that James was nothing more than a mindless fighter that Sawyer controls, but then why am I drawn to him? Why is it as we spend more time with each other that I start to realize there are hidden depths to the man behind that cold facade he wears? I know I need to stay focused, do my job, and get out of Asylum, but I can’t leave James behind. And how can I manage to do any of that when Sawyer is breathing down our necks? One simple mistake would be enough to ruin the bond that has started to form between us.
James
I’ve given up on looking for a better life and become resigned to doing what Sawyer asks, but the hatred I feel for the man is beginning to overflow. When Kai returns, I’m initially filled with disbelief. He had it all, and when he had a chance to stay away, he came back. At first, I find myself irritated by his presence, but maybe that isn’t the only emotion I’m feeling when he’s around.
For the first time in my life, there’s someone who cares about me—someone who will notice if I’m gone—and it makes me want to fight harder than I’ve ever fought before. It makes me want to protect him from the sickness of this city. And before long, I realize that I’ll do anything for this man I once disliked. Because I’ve found someone to love and Sawyer isn’t going to take that away from me.
The Traitor and the Fighter is 104k words of enemies-to-lovers, poorly chosen safe words, a traitor who is fighting for what is right, a fighter who won’t be stopped, a misunderstood dog who might try to eat a few people along the way, and a love that overcomes even the darkest circumstances.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2024This was a wonderful dark story of two “villains” becoming heroes and finding love along the way. No one writes teasing banter and hilarious situations like Alice Winters which is a good thing because this story goes to some dark psychological places. However it’s the grim world they survived that makes the HEA so much sweeter.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2024This series is a little darker than her other books but has a wonderful HEA. I have now read all the books and I am sad. So I guess I could start over.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2021Everything I said in my review of The Sinner and the Liar applies to The Traitor and the Fighter as well. It's a dark, gritty, often violent, and ultimately beautiful story of redemption.
The timeline for this book overlaps with the first in the series, so they do need to be read in order. This one follows James, the second in command of the Chromes in the walled city of Asylum, and Kai, a former Chromes member who managed to escape the city to save his sister. He returns to the Chromes a few years later as an undercover informant to save her again. James and Kai have ugly pasts filled with unforgivable acts, but they find forgiveness together. Also, there's a former fighting dog named Cerberus who only eats the faces of people who deserve it.
As usual, the dialog is excellent, with just the right balance of snark and heartfelt exchanges. The characters are interesting and complex. The plot is strong, and the action moves the book along perfectly. It is different from the funny books I associate with Alice Winters, but it's so, so good. It's easy to mask bad writing with humor; when you strip that away in this series of books, you get to see just how good Alice is.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2020Desperate to save his sister, Kai would do anything, even return to the savage criminal life he has escaped years ago and face the psychotic monster who leads the chaos. But he didn't count on the gang's second in command remembering how he'd abandoned him to the wrath of the leader after his escape because he assumed James was just a mindless drone following orders. James is lividly angry when Kai returns to his hellish existence because he thought he had escaped and left him behind. But Kai is different than the gang member he has been and has grown up to be someone James can admire, even like. Can James forgive him and actually feel something for another person besides the hate that eats at his soul? Kai must find a way to earn back trust so he can get his sister the care she needs, but is there someone else he cares about as well now that he understands more? Loving everything Alice Winters writes!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2020I really love the characters and the deep connection they develop. I also love how pervy they are with each other. I especially love a story with an element of redemption for a bad guy/bad guys.
I swear, I practically devoured this book. I couldn't stop reading it.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2020I have enjoyed the books written by Ms. Winters to date, some more than others and I thought this would be an good peak into a couple of characters that caught my eye from The Sinner and the Liar. What I found was that James reminded me strongly of Eastyn and I realized I was more curious about Ian and his life than James. The story read too similar and I could not jive the James from the first book with the James in this book. Revelations about who he is explained his behavior but I honestly think the first book wrapped everything up nicely. I was also troubled by a term that in African American culture is used but can be viewed as negative when describing hair. I was very taken aback, mildly offended and confused as to why the term "nappy" was used by James to describe the "state" of Kai's hair; he is Asian. I just saw no value in that line of banter from James when chatting in front of another character and it took me out of the story at that point. Other than that one glitch, her other books read well, if not long. I hope in future Ms. Winters considers her terms with a bit more care so as not to offend readers unintentionally. I enjoy her books.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2020James and Kai are just snarky and funny and almost too perfect for words. I love how James lives to torture Kai and make Kai jump through ridiculous hoops. They have a fantastic love story set against all this drama and action.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2020Alice Winters does it again. This series is engaging, funny and has all the feels. I will read anything she writes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not a typical Alice Winters
I've read almost every series by Alice Winters and I've enjoyed them all. However the 'wise cracking younger guy' was starting to get a bit much until they all started blending together. This book is different. Both James and Kai are proper adults, almost the same age, and much more evenly matched. I loved the simplicity of their relationship and the fact that there was no unnecessary angst and misunderstandings between them though there was scope to create it if the author wanted. I enjoyed the book and I'm glad this dystopian universe is starting to perk up at the end of each book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved Kai and James dynamic
I love Alice Winters writing, its amazing and the best thing is her characters never change if the are goofy there goofy throughout the book if the are stern they are stern throughout the book etc. What they do is learn to love and be the best person they can be and the other persons loves all of them.
This story went on too long but I loved the chemistry, banater and acceptance from James and Kai. They made each other perfect.
I did like this one so much better than the first and to be honest didnt read all of the first one didnt like Eastyn and Sin seemed like a whimp. Would truly recommend reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this dystopian series
Book two in this series focuses on James and Kai, both considered 'bad guys', who get their HEA. Of course with all of Alice's books, the characters all live in the grey area, not good or bad. They are damaged people dealing with ugly circumstances with humour and snark, but also with a hefty dose of violence and lots of heat. I absolutly loved this series and really wish there was a book 3, perhaps for Ian, Luca and Dante? Here's hoping 🙏

5.0 out of 5 stars My favourite Winters story yet
I love the character growth in this story; I love how Winters' is able to convey a sense of history between Kai and James without the use of flashbacks; I love the moments of pure hilarity that is a Winters' staple and I love it more that those moments are so beautifully balanced within this more serious story.
