Jade is back with her chocolate goodness! And oh boy what a delicious treat is Treasures, Demons, and Other Black Magic. The Dowser has become one of my favorite Urban Fantasy series, if you haven't read it yet, I don't know what you are waiting for, start reading this series today!
->Every time I read this series, I feel like I need to have cupcakes nearby, and chocolate, loads of chocolate...
->Warning! This review contains certain sensitive information, and may be a spoiler if you haven't read book 1&2, please think carefully before you continue reading this review.
Poor Jade, she just can't catch a break. When Jade return after three month and a half training with the dragons, she only have one thing in mind. Hunt down her sister, otherwise known as psycho Black Witch to the Others. With the help of her green-hair werewolf bestfriend/protector, Kandy, her vampire friend/mentor/or whatever he is to Jade, Kette. And her overactive, possible ADD fledgling Dragon companion, Drake. You would think this mission might be littler easier for Jade, WRONG!
It seem no matter what Jade does, she is always one step behind her evil, psycho foster sister. Even when she have a plan she somehow ended up making more mistakes then she intended.
->I wouldn't say Jade is badass yet, she is still in training after all. But as a half-witch and half-something else (censor for those who haven't read book 2), Jade is no doubt unique and would be quite powerful in the near future. I love reading about Jade's magic, I think it's neat and refreshing. Badass or not, Jade kick-butts in this book!
->I felt really bad for Jade in this book, it seem all of her friends were quite harsh on her.
Jade made a decision to stay behind the Dragon Nexus, in order to avoid all her love ones ended up dead in Sienna's hands. Her strength and magic were simply not strong enough, and she needed the training to be prepare. It seem some may not understand Jade's absence. Now, what's interesting is Jade actually left the Dragon Nexus early, well she actually sneak out. Does this mean she will be returning to the Nexus and continue her training?
->Jade has a good heart, maybe too good. She need to become mentally and emotionally stronger in order to survive the magic world. Or just eat loads of chocolate and bake plenty of cupcakes (I think this would work out pretty well too).
Sienna on the other hand, I did not feel bad for her at all. She is after all quite murderous, arrogant, power hunger, full of envy and you know pure evil.
->very happy about how this ended, though I am positive Jade disagreed. But I don't have any complaints.
Compare to the the first two books, this book is much darker, there are more dead and more friends will be hurt. Jade will be force on making decisions in order to save all her love ones, and you know everyone else. I thought the pace of this book was great, how the story unfold was solid and very well written. Each part in Jade's journey on finding her foster sister were full of actions. The anticipation lead up to the ending battle definitely kept me on edge. This book continue with strong world building, and characters developments. I thoroughly enjoy reading this book.
So, there were interesting developments on Jade and Kette...
->Kette is definitely growing on me, I am quite intrigue on Kette. I am interested to learn more about him (yeah, can you tell I am a fan?).
->Anyone else like Drake? He is quite a character, I hope we see more of him in the future.
->Not enough of Desmond in this book!! (sad)
However, when Desmond do appear in the book, I was totally hang up on it. I love the chemistry he has with Jade, and how he trusts Jade and supports her in this book. Jade also confide in Desmond when she was too afraid and guilty to tell the others. I love their connection and relationship. But I am not sure what will happen to them now, and I can't help but to remember the warning Kandy keep giving Jade. But I am still keeping positive thoughts though (one can only hope).
I wonder what waits for Jade in the next book, I can't wait!
I highly recommend this series to those who enjoy Urban Fantasy genre.
Happy reading!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2014Delightful series - worth reading. The story flows well, characters are well developed. The magic world described is different; I personally find some actios/ developments a but too predictable, but that is left to each reader.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2023This is the 3rd book in the series and it was WONDERFUL ! This was the first time I’ve read anything from this author and I love how “quick”this book read. I could not put it down. The characters are so well developed & the story is well developed ….I’m hoping there will be a 4th in the series. I want to know what happens with the portal and the dragons.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2020So we now know who Jade's father is and what the other "non-human" half of her is. After seeing the future the seer showed her, Jade decides to stay in the nexus with the dragons and train. Train how to become stronger, faster, and more aware of the magic and other supernatural entities she was sheltered, and admittedly, not overly concerned with learning more about until Sienna went rogue and started killing other Adepts for their powers. After 3 months though, she definitely needed to step back into the real world, if only to feed her chocolate addiction. But things definitely don't go as planned when Drake, the fledging dragon decides to tag along on her new adventure. Worried about her friends, including young Mory, who was last seen with Sienna in the cave, Jade decides to confront Blackwell in Scotland. From there, she tracks Sienna to London where all hell breaks lose.
From the fiasco in London, back home to Vancouver, Jade and her allies will again have to save the world from Sienna and the demons she is dead set on raising unbeknownst to all those around them.
This series just keeps getting better. And although Jade continually makes some bad choices that always costs her something in the end, she also just manages to win, but at great loss too. One of the most human characters with flaws galore, but also someone who is fiercely loyal and tries to do the right thing.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2016Vampires, Witches, Werewolves, Necromancers, Sorcerers, Dragons and Demons!
The world of the Dowser series (which I lovingly call my cupcake books in my head) is so rich and full of life! I feel like I am in the passenger seat with Jade and Kett and Kandy saving the world.
I can't count the number of times I've had tears in my eyes because of the camraderie that these book inspires among so many superbly unique characters and creatures which such widely different and well defined personalities. And talk about action! This book in particular is action packed :)
But the first thing I fell in love with is Meghan Ciana Doidge's voice- or rather the main character, Jade's voice. It is lighthearted and incredibly funny. These books are serious page turners and contain some kind of magical addiction ingredient that has kept me up until 4am reading Jade's voice and consuming this story in great big bites as much as I'd love to savor them!
They are all worth a second read and I'm just glad I have several to read before circling back to the beginning. It is truly a joy to read these books.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2017Half-witch Jade Godfrey has spent the last three months honing her magic, preparing for the inevitable showdown with her power-hungry blood-magic-crazed foster sister, Sienna. A seer's vision of the future has convinced Jade that she alone must confront the black witch, or else sacrifice the lives of everyone she loves. As her initial attempt only results in loss of life and a broken life-debt bond, Jade is prompted to convene an army of the Adept for assistance. But can she defeat her sister and still avoid the future she's been shown?
Once again, the author brings the hidden magical society of Vancouver, B.C., to life and populates it with characters that quickly capture the imagination and make you want to root for their success. A good, action packed read for lovers of the paranormal.
