Trinkets, Treasures, and Other Bloody Magic (Dowser Series Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 2,067 ratings

Three months ago, I lost my foster sister, Sienna, to the darkness. As in blood magic and chaos and general mayhem. No one saw it until it was too late, but I should have. Now, I have a wounded heart and soul that I can’t even reveal to anyone around me, because I’m supposed to hate Sienna with the fiery passion of the justified. And I do. I just wish I didn’t feel so lost without her, so unsure of the path I thought I had carved for myself, and so outclassed by the powerful Adepts constantly by my side these days. I’m not even sure if they’re with me for my own protection or because my shiny new powers are rare and valuable. Assuming I ever figure out who or what I am, and how my magic actually works. Even chocolate can’t save the day every time … just most of the time. At least I’ve got that going for me.

Trinkets, Treasures, and Other Bloody Magic is the second book in the Dowser series, which is set in the same universe as the Oracle, Reconstructionist, Amplifier, Archivist, and Misfits of the Adept Universe series. While it is not necessary to read all the series, in order to avoid spoilers the ideal reading order of the Adept Universe begins with Cupcakes, Trinkets, and Other Deadly Magic (Dowser 1).

5 stars - Great sequel. I couldn't put it down I'm really glad I found this author ... but now I need to read the third book immediately ... this one left my hungry for more, and hanging off my seat. - Amazon USA reviewer

5 stars - Funny, witty, charming main character. Clever writing, with sass and humor. Totally enjoyed this book so much, that once I was done, I immediately bought the others in the series. - Amazon USA reviewer

5 stars - Twists and turns. This book will keep you guessing! A great follow-up to the first book of the Dowser Series. If you read the first book, you will not be disappointed with this entertaining, attention grabbing storyline. - Amazon USA reviewer

5 stars - Brilliant! I loved the first book, but this one adds dark magic and other elements (to say would give the game away!) to the exquisite mix of cupcakes, lust, witches, vampires and werewolves. I previously asked what more could you want? I found it! - Amazon UK reviewer

5 stars - Two words ... freaking amazing. - Goodreads reviewer

I'm on my...second? Well, this is possibly my third reading of this series. There is so MUCH waiting for anyone who is reading for the first time. At least two other series intersect with this one. All of the author's books are populated with amazing, impossible to forget characters, and plots that will keep you glued to your book. You need to read these!

Jade, the main character, continues to grow and learn more about her magic and herself. Most of the new characters are interesting, but some come out of left field or are not fully developed. In addition, not everything hangs together quite as cohesively as it did in the first book and it ends on an odd sort of cliffhanger, which is why I only gave the book four stars. Nevertheless, the book is enjoyable and it is nice to learn more about Desmond and Kett. Scarlett is a great addition and Ms. Doidge does a credible job of explaining why she was not more present in Jade's life growing up. The ending is very intriguing and I will be keen to see what happens next.

I finished reading this book approximately five minutes ago, and immediately rushed to 1.) purchase the next book in the series and 2.) write a glowing review while the next book is downloading. I really can't express how enjoyable this series is. The seemingly casual first-person style of writing threw me off in the beginning, but I found the story intriguing enough to stick with it. Now? I am absolutely sucked-in. The main character is lovable, real, funny, and relatable in a way you wouldn't expect in a tale about folks with magical abilities. I find myself dwelling on the story while going about my day, and rooting for Jade when all seems against her. I am so excited to find out what happens next!

I happened upon Ms. Doidge by chance based on a review I read on a blog that was recommended by another blogger. I downloaded the first of the dowser series and was completely and totally hooked. I could not put my iPad down for a second. Then this stunning book was finished and I realized there was a second book in the series. I am a huge fan now. Her imagination is unparalleled. Unique. The types of magic and characters that she has come up with are amazing, interesting, and like nothing I've read before. As I was reading these two books, it occurred to me that they would make a wonderful HBO series in the vein of True Blood. Her characters are deep and interesting. There's enough magic between the characters to keep you reading. I did not see the ending coming and was completely surprised. I really think that Ms. Doidge has a career ahead of her akin to some of the best fantasy writers out there. I can't wait till she is finished with the third book in the series. Meanwhile I plan to devour every single book she has written.

This is a good 2nd book. The story is intriguing, keeping you interested. The heroine bakes cupcakes that sound yummy. (recipes would be appreciated) In this book Jade learns more about herself, who she is, what she can become and there is a surprise. Both for her and the reader. Won't give it away, just saying the end of this book goes where no other book that I know of goes. I am reading the 3rd book and have no doubt I will read the 4th when it is released.

This is the 2nd in the series and OH BOY, it’s doesn’t disappoint. Our heroin finally discovers what her other half is (beyond witch). Her life is about to change and I can’t wait to read book 3! Well written with characters you think could be Real.
A fun beach read. LOVED IT.

Better than the first book and now into book three. Nothing to complain about. Live this new series and can't put it down!
  • Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2014
After reading the first book in only two sittings I rushed and bought this straight after the last page of book 1. To be honest I enjoyed it, the story continued seamlessly and the character filled out their fated futures but I did feel a bit let down somehow.
Without any spoilers, I did find the focus on sweets and chocolate a bit excessive - especially as I'm not really a sweet tooth - compared to book 1, almost to the point that it trivialised the huge events happening in the story. I understand the use of humour to break the stress and tension but in places it was almost as if two people were writing the story and one was a pastry chef not a writer.

I'd recommend people to buy it to finish the story but can't say it'd a re-read.
