Trumptopia!: The United States of Walmart Kindle Edition

5.0 out of 5 stars 11 ratings

The year is 2026. Donald Trump is in his third term as president. America has entered the Re-Recession. Mega-Walmarts are popping up over the country like pimples on prom night.

Jonathan Savage, a mediocre caterer and doormat husband, isn’t worried about any of that, though. He’s more concerned with the assassin who traveled back in time to murder him … Terminator-style!

Thus begins an absurd adventure through time as Savage accidentally travels to the year 2076 where the country has been taken over by the Walmart Corporation, Donald Trump’s evil clone, and the mysterious and genocidal President of the United States … who also happens to be the man who wants Savage dead. Savage must save the future or risk destroying his own past.

This time-traveling dystopian comedy/political satire uses the absurdity of present-day America to pay tribute to classic works of dystopian literature including 1984, Fahrenheit 451, A Brave New World, and A Clockwork Orange.

I'm Douglas James Troxell. I'm the author of Cheshire Moon, The United States of Walmart, and other weird, wacky, and satirical works. I specialize in dystopian, speculative, and absurdist literature with a strong focus on sci-fi and fantasy. I've loved all things sci-fi and fantasy for most of my life (X-Files, Doctor Who, Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, etc.) and when I ran out of fantastical worlds to visit via books, movies, television, and video games, I started making my own.

When I'm not writing, you can find me out in the woods hiking, playing disc golf, or at home watching one of my favorite bad movies. Nicolas Cage for life!

The Truman Show on steroids, this original dystopian novel is filled with time travel, travesties, and Trump. It subtly weaves in 1984, Fahrenheit 451, Animal Farm, and Slaughterhouse Five (as in “Billy Pilgrim has become unstuck in time”), just to name a few. Troxell is a master of the dystopian genre.

One of my favorite quotes by the protagonist: “People don’t want to be slaves. They could be led to their own salvation if they had a leader who was more interested in leading them than slaughtering them.”
Trumptopia! is a roller coaster ride into the soul of the evil man, the soul of the ordinary man, and the soul of the empty, unthinking man.

The greatest irony was how hard Savage tried to “get home” when he had no home, just a set for a TV show.

This guy did it. This was an enormous undertaking and this guy did it. He wraps satire, sci-fi, history and absurdity into a tight fast-paced well thought-out story. One of the strengths of this tale is the execution of laugh out loud funny moments that are also frightening at the same time. This novel was meant to be a comedy about a relatively far future in the United States. From the perspective of 2020, it is a portrayal of contemporary society proving that the damage has already been done.

This book had me laughing from Chapter 1. I absolutely loved the concept from cover to cover. I was left wondering what would happen from the sectioning of how the book is set up. There were so many futuristic realities that we face today, which really makes you think. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who needs a good laugh, or likes any sort of dystopian future novels.

If you read this book four or more years prior to 2020, it would seem far-fetched. However, living in the present day United States brings this book into a conceivable future reality. Trumptopia! is a sci-fi, dystopian comedy that gives you all the feels; sadness, anxiety, excitement and hope.

This book explores our current society by engrossing the reader in a version of America in 2076 that has been influenced by our greatest flaws. Science fiction and satire are tied together in a thought-provoking way. The story provides plenty of laughs while also requiring readers to think critically about their current choices and their impact on the future. Douglas J. Troxel may soon join the long list of satire writers to predict the future. The Simpsons and South Park are just a few shows who have been spot on with their satirical look at the future. While the accuracy of these predictions is impressive readers must wonder if there is any way to avoid such a ridiculous future. This book might be one of the few warning signs we have to improve our future before it's too late.

Kind of like mafia movies in "The Sopranos," classic dystopian texts are the flavor here as Troxell calls back to their thematic to show just how correct they were and the possibilities of a hyper-dystopian rather near future. The book's namesake is only the catalyst in this funny and thought-provoking, but sets the tone of just how inane American society can (will?) be. Students of Orwell, Bradbury, Huxley, and DeLillo will find this an excellent supplementary text for, perhaps, comparative literary writing and an applicative look at the current technological paradigm shift. You will have a good time, but you will also take a step back and look at what we've done!

This book is just brilliant! The humor and flow of it reminds me of Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five" with a hint of "1984", bringing a bit of humor to a serious, and at times dangerous, point - trusting blindly in a system without question. I wish Doug Troxell the very best of luck on this venture with this book, it is a fantastic read!
