Turkey the Raw Guide (Best of Perking the Pansies Book 1) Kindle Edition

3.8 out of 5 stars 15 ratings

Have you ever wondered what it’s really like to pitch your tent in a foreign field, particularly a Muslim one? Guidebooks and travelogues only go so far. To get a real feel, you need to ask someone who’s been there, done that and bought all the fake t-shirts. When Jack Scott and his Civil Partner, Liam, moved to Turkey nothing could prepare them for what was to come – heatstroke, frostbite, biblical floods, Byzantine red tape, lazy censorship, blackouts, bugs from Hell, rancid drains, lunatic drivers, dirty politics, spring-loaded waiters, jaw-dropping sunsets, kindness, generosity and acceptance. They stumbled upon what Jack infamously described as the mad, the bad, the sad and the glad. Jack decided to write it all down in a blog for all the world to ignore. He called it Perking the Pansies. Against the odds and quite by surprise, Perking the Pansies grew into the most successful blog of its kind in Turkey, attracting a loyal following, the attention of the Turkish national press and hatched an award-winning Amazon number one best-selling book.

Now that Jack and Liam's sweeping Anatolian adventures are behind them, Jack is publishing the best of the blog as a two volume e-book. The uncensored director's cut includes previously unpublished material and some solid home-spun practical advice about living the dream. Visas, tax, banking, working, customs, healthcare, schools for the ankle biters - all the boring stuff is in there. Jack likes to be functional as well as decorative.

From the Author

Episode One of the best of Perking the Pansies, the Turkey years.

About the Author

In 2010, Jack started an irreverent narrative about his new life and Perking the Pansies quickly became one of the most popular English language blogs in Turkey. Within a year, Jack had been featured in the Turkish national press, published numerous essays and articles in expat and travel magazines and contributed to the Huffington Post Union of Bloggers. As the blog developed a head of steam, a growing worldwide audience clamoured for a book. Jack duly obliged and his hilarious (well, he thinks so) memoir,  Perking the Pansies, Jack and Liam move to Turkey hit the streets at Christmas 2011. The book became a critically acclaimed, award winning best seller and its success has opened out a whole new career for Jack as an author. Jack and Liam decided to end their Anatolian adventure and paddle back to Britain on the evening tide. They currently live in Norwich, a beautiful cathedral city in eastern England.

Jack's now on a Turkey roll. He's released the best of the blog as a two part e-book, Turkey, the Raw Guide and Turkey, Surviving the Expats. The uncensored director's cut includes previously unpublished material together with solid advice about the extra-ordinary land that Jack called home for four years. Jack likes to be functional as well as decorative.

Imagine the absurdity of two openly gay, married, middle aged, middle class men escaping the liberal sanctuary of anonymous London to relocate to a Muslim country. Jack Scott chronicled his exploits with the mad, the bad, the sad and the glad in a blog for the whole world to ignore. Then came the book which became a critically acclaimed best seller. Its success opened out a whole new career for Jack as an author. www.jackscott.info

How many times have you been with friends, and somebody new has joined the group? Favourite stories are recounted. Other stories you’d forgotten about, rise to the surface like the cream of the crop. And out of the blue, fresh tales are revealed.

That’s what it felt like when I was devouring Jack Scott’s latest book “Turkey the Raw Guide”.

Ever since the 2011 release of his first book, Perking the Pansies, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the arrival of his next work of page-turning brilliance. The wait is over!

Whereas Perking the Pansies was his autobiographical journey of what led them to Turkey and the exploits and interactions that shaped their experience, Turkey the Raw Guide is an artful collection of his best blog content.

But, it’s not merely a series of blog posts hurriedly patched together, it’s actually a perfectly embroidered quilt of experience, recounting Jack and Liam’s Turkish adventure, edged with some sound advice and great reference material for anyone who wants to go on a similar adventure themselves.

For those readers who haven’t followed his blog, Turkey The Raw Guide introduces you to an insider’s account of Paradise Found; Lost; and Found again.

We follow along as Jack and Liam discover a cozy love nest for two; uncover the perils of jumping into bed with an expat community without foreplay and a courtship; and the cold hard reality known as Turkish winter.

After leaving Yalikavak, they head to the warm embrace of Bodrum, and the comfort of the Bodrum Belles, Gumbet Gals and Bitez Babes.

For those of us who have followed his blog, this book is a gentle reminder of why Jack’s so popular in the blogosphere. His blog posts aren’t one hit wonders, they’re catchy tunes you’re dying to hear again.

Even though I’ve followed Perking the Pansies since the beginning, I was one of the first people to download his new book (I think the e-reader ink was barely dry).

I devoured Jack's Raw Turkey for Christmas ... and it was delicious.

After reading Perking the Pansies, I just couldn't stop myself to get this book. As I am a Turkish guy I must admit I fell in love with the cover. Then I started to read this wonderful book and I highly recommend it. You will not regret at all.

2.0 out of 5 stars some funny, some sad

If anyone has read Indonesia Etc. they will know what kind of book I was hoping to get. An outsider's insider's perspective into a country, its beauties, its warts, some funny, some sad, and so on. I was however terribly disappointed by "Turkey: The Raw Guide". It read as a list of lazy and glib observations from a tourist in Turkey. There was very little connection to the actual land or its people. I gather this book is based off a travel blog and it certainly shows. I would not recommend purchasing and I would suggest looking elsewhere to gather your Turkish insights.

Really enjoyed this book, in some ways more so than perking the pansies. Jack is very amusing with his writings of everyday life in Turkey. Knowing the area very well I almost found myself wanting to join in his conversations I look forward to reading part two.

Raw guide to living as a gay couple in Turkey. Not applicable to me. Love Turkey and the Turkish people and this book does not portray them in a good light.
