Under The Twilight Rainfall (Love Abroad) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 71 ratings

Find Love Abroad under the twinkling twilight of the Philippines.

DEX

Life is good: I’ve got a thriving private photography business, gorgeous sights at my fingertips, and not a single desire to set down roots. Roots that once entangled me with a boy of dark eyes and a smart mouth who I never would have survived my time in the foster system without.

He was both my savior and my curse. I didn’t belong–I never do–so I left the Olaño family behind. I should have known fate would eventually draw me back into Valen Olaño’s orbit. This family is more than I deserve, but I want it. I want him.

Except I wasn't built to be kept, and I'm not sure I know how to stay.

VALEN

Once upon a time, I fell in love with a broken boy. He didn’t want me to fix him, and one day, he disappeared. When Dex’s work brings him to my family’s home in the Philippines, that long buried spark kindles back to life and catches us both on fire.

Innocent touches become heated hands, and as I hold onto these stolen moments like a lifeline, I tell myself it will be enough. As much as I want him, I can’t hope to keep him. My family needs me.

If only Dex would accept that he’s my family too.

Rikki Leighton is a queer romance author with an extra special spot in their heart for the M/M community. They write primarily contemporary romances with attention drawn to mental health and plenty of hurt/comfort to go around. They'll bring lots of heat and heartache but will always deliver a well-deserved HEA to every story.

They live in East Tennessee with their two rambunctious children and partner, no pets because their kids are wild enough. If they aren't obsessing over what words go on the page, they're likely drowning their attention in drama shows and horror movies.

I loved Rikki Leighton's debut novel. I am, first and foremost, a character based reader. In order for me to fully enjoy a book, I need to connect with the characters and Rikki presented two amazing characters that came alive on the page.

Dex was complicated and broken and watching him learn to open up over the weeks that he spent in the Phillipines and reconnecting with Valen was beautiful. I loved him so much. Like I wanted to pick him up and put him in my pocket, even if that wanderlust filled boy would hate it. And Valen was a perfect complement to Dex. He was steady and patient and so head over heels for his former foster brother that it wasn't funny.

The chemistry between these two men was palpable. I think I would've liked a little more of when they were younger, just because I'm a curious kitten, but it wasn't enough of a desire to count against the story. The bits we did get though enhanced their connection and enhanced the believability of what they felt for each other.

And while I know this is controversial, I loved the epilogue. I'll say it. I loved it. I loved that their HEA took time and was hard won. It wasn't the traditional HEA we expect and that made both their HEA and the couple itself stand out.

I cannot wait to see what else Rikki produces and I know they'll be added to my TBR instantly from now on.

This is a sweet and beautiful story. It really tugged at my heart a few times while reading it. I'm glad that I got to read it.

I received an ARC and this is my unbiased opinion

I loved reading these two’s love story!! I love found family stories and when broken characters come together and fit just so that their broken pieces begin to heal. That definitely describes Dex and Valen. Loved this book!!

Stumbling upon the summary of this on Facebook was the best thing ever...starting to read it on a writer's retreat, at 11pm, when I'm sharing a room with someone who doesn't have insomnia...worst thing ever.
I'm trying not to sob into my pillow with how cute these two are!

“Two people with different traumas that somehow found solace in each other” is a quote from the book that sums up then and now. Ten years ago, Dex was a foster child with Val’s family. Val was wild, 2 years older than Dex, but he always looked out for him, protected him, and made him feel safe. A damaged soul living through several foster homes, Dex just wanted a home and a family to love him, but experience had taught him he wasn’t worthy and it wasn’t to be. When Val’s family wanted to adopt him, he ran from Val and all his family represented, a dream he couldn’t have.

Dex lived the next seven years not putting down roots, traveling the world with his camera and his blog, never letting anyone close and running if feelings started. When his travels take him to the Philippines, he discovers that the lodging arrangements made by his travel agent (with help from Val) have him staying with Val and his family. Val has been in love with Dex since they were teens, and even though he knows Dex won’t stay, the three weeks he is scheduled to stay is time Val won’t give up. The two spend the time with Val’s family, sightseeing and taking pictures, getting closer and closer physically and emotionally, still fighting their own personal demons — “two lost and broken boys just trying to fix the pieces of themselves while jumping into danger headfirst, as if this right here isn’t the very reason we broke apart in the first place”.

A beautiful story of two men, one craving love and acceptance but feeling unworthy, and the other with all the love and acceptance that Dex could need, waiting with patience and perseverance to keep the love of his life. Both POV are given, there are descriptions of beautiful scenery, loving family life there for the taking if Dex wants it, and steamy scenes of the expression by both of the yearning and need for fulfillment they both need. I would give the book 4.5 stars.

I wasn't sure if I could really fall in love with a character who is so terrified of feelings and is a sex blogger, but Rikki has such a deft touch that it is impossible not to.
