Twisted Circles: Dark Academia Romance (Secret Society) Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars 1,062 ratings

**100% STANDALONE, COLLEGE ROMANTIC SUSPENSE (NOT DARK ROMANCE)

From New York Times Bestselling author Claire Contreras comes a new mysterious, sexy, STANDALONE secret society novel . . .

When someone tells you who you are, do you believe them?

The first question the cops asked me was if anything out of the ordinary happened to me lately.

When I woke up this morning in the room of a mental institution I couldn’t remember a thing – not my name nor how I got there. Not how I left or how I ended up in that interrogation room.

The only thing I knew came from the contents inside my bag. A wallet, a student ID, a key that opened an unknown door, and two notebooks.

They tell me my name. It matches my IDs.

They tell me my story. I shut my eyes and try to piece it together, but can’t.

They tell me why they picked me up in the first place. They thought I was my sister. My brain stays stuck there. I try to rewind and fast-forward, as if my memories were on a videotape, but it’s no use. I can’t recall having a sister.

They put me back in the car and drop me off in front of a mansion they call The Manor and I discover that the mysterious key in my backpack opens the front door, and just as quickly wish I’d never unlocked it at all.

This is a 100% standalone in the world as Half Truths.

Claire Contreras is many things — a New York Times Bestselling author, breast cancer survivor, mother, and wife.

Thanks to her boredom and rebellious nature, she has an affinity to genre-jump, so in her backlist, you can find anything from contemporary romance, to sports romance, to romantic suspense, to books she can only describe as, “Weird, but romantic?”

Despite the genre-jumping, all of her stories are multicultural and feature strong heroines (Claire has never met a weak woman --- they just don’t exist), found families (because she doesn’t know where she’d be without hers), and heroes who fall first, harder, are kind of obsessed with the heroine and always trying to impress her (because that’s the hero she married 17 years ago).

Claire was born in the Dominican Republic, raised in Miami, and lives in North Carolina, where she spends her days marveling at the beautiful sky and forcing her family to marvel along with her.

Since starting her publishing journey in 2013, she has written over 25 romance novels, which have been translated into over 20 languages.

Claire gave up social media a couple of years ago, but according to her horoscope, she can’t reach her full potential if she’s always hiding, so she’s trying to get back out there this year. Maybe.

Oh so twisted...

Oh so twisted...
Wow. I don’t even know where to begin. Claire Contreras has created this secret society world that just keeps getting more mysterious, more suspenseful, more secretive, and extraordinary at the same time. You guys. I am terrible at reviews. I am not good with words. I will say that I thought I had figured it out. I was like “okay. I have this one, it’s going to end this way” and NOPE! Claire messed with my head and twisted it all up but in such a good way. Adam and Eva were greatly written characters. Not going to lie, at first I was so unsure about Eva’s attitude but I of course kept reading and I came to understand her so much. There is mystery, so much suspense and of course romance. But this book has all three down PERFECTLY. The best story so far of 2020, HANDS DOWN. Claire has pretty much perfected her skill of story telling and I will always one-click any book she writes. Ps: I listened to the audible in ONE DAY! I had already read the book twice but I needed to listen. AH-MAZING!!! Brilliant. Loved it!

Another good adventure! I had a great time. As the story continued to develop, I was sad that not every character got to have a HEA, but that's also life, so I can't be mad at it.

⚠️ some spoilers ahead and as always, please review warnings for potential sensitive content ⚠️

Finished with Leigh Bardugo's Ninth House and Hell Bent? Here's your next binge read with secret societies, dark academia and all sorts of mischief 😏

I enjoyed the plot in both books. With that in mind, I connected more with the characters in the first book. The triplet/ trinity theme in Twisted Truths made sense, but felt harder to follow along with.

Each society is outlined with a more in depth history than I assumed we'd get. As you might suspect, both groups perform questionable acts, have a lot of secrets, and an unyielding loyalty to their fellow members.

I'd definitely recommend slowing down if you decide to read these, they are fast-paced and I kept getting caught up in what was happening (never a bad thing!) but I went back a few times to reread something because of that.

Also want to add a plug that there isn't A LOT of actual hockey play happening. The books seemed to follow and focus mostly on character growth (which was top tier in Half Truths, for me anyways). There were times in the Twisted Circles where I wanted to reach in and shake Wendy, Stella and Eva.

Call me Goldilocks because the spice is just right in this duology 🔥 🌶

A secret society, mental health and romantic suspense collide in this dark(ish) college romance. I was consumed by the first book in the series so this second book has left me feeling a little unsatisfied. I really did like this book but I kept waiting to be swept away or emotionally moved and I just wasn’t. The story deals with a lot of issues, adoption, multiples, mental health, religion and it all should have had my on the edge of my seat but I just wasn’t. I cared. I really liked Adam and the small pieces of his character that kept him interesting, real and of course, hot. But Eva kept falling in and out of favor. I felt like there were parts of the story where her mental health issues were going to be revealed or explained or made more relevant but they weren’t so I was sort of in and out with her. It’s a good read and I like this authors style but it just fell short for me. Still a good read though. 3 stars, 1 pepper (this is basically a closed door romance/FTB)

didn't read Half Truths, it's related but this is new. This one made me curious so I had to try. I was intrigued right away and even more fascinated. Secret societies have been interesting to say the least. So much speculation and unknown, it's earned a reputation. There was a creepy weird factor straight away but I wanted to know more.

I'll keep it vague not to spoil. But this was a page turner for sure. Couldn't put it down. Not remembering but told you were somewhere abd you didn't remember anything can be overwhelming. Add to that being asked to infiltrate a cult under a different name. It takes lot of guts to go undercover but she took it on. Wasn't sure if I was scared for Eva or excited. It was all very X-files meets Stranger Things kinda feel to it which I liked a lot. Truths hidden, science stuff and all sorts of themes. Kept me invested.

So many pieces of a puzzle where and how do they all fit. The secrets and thinking behind it all is complex but well done that it's understandable. I liked the interactions between Eva and Adam plus the otjer characters. They are all interesting made this even more engrossing. It explored many things and some mind/mental conditioning, it might be weird but made sense. It was all twisty and kept me thinking throughout. It was good also touched some important messages amidst all that.

I enjoyed this one very much. I will definitely read back the first book can't believe I missed it. Claire Contreras pieced together a fantastic romantic suspense it had a lot in it. Eagerly awaiting Nolan's book.

Such a tangled web of secrets and lies. Pledging to a secret society to find out the truth becomes more than she ever expected. A crazy ride of deception and twisted rituals that will have you questioning everyone’s motives.

Eva is approached by a stranger and asked to attend the initiation for The Swords. Unbeknownst to her, she has a sister who is missing. It’s now up to her to find out what happened to her. To find out the truth, she will have to become Stella Thompson. To become a Sword, she will have to survive initiation.

Adam is her sponsor. He’ll be by her side to guide her. Women are rarely given the opportunity to join. She’ll have to mentally tough to succeed. Adam will become her rock.

As the story unfolds, Eva will discover her truth. However, getting others to believe her will be the challenge. Nothing is as it seems. Those she trusted all her life may not be who she thought. As a girl she struggled with fitting in. She’ll find out the root of her problem. All the while, she’ll find the family she always deserved through The Swords, who will stand beside her.

This is not a story for the faint of heart. Courage will be tested. Loyalty will be questioned. Sides will be chosen. Sacrifices will be made. In the end, the truth will prevail.

A romantic supsense about a secret society where you can expect the unexpected. The story is dark and twisted with religious themes, unsanctioned scientific experiments and depraved rituals. Eva’s life will be turned upside down, but in the end she’ll find love and a family.

I have no better word than the one I said. It's really mind blowing. The story has kept me on my toes. It's so suspenseful that I did not even dare to guess what would happen next. The story is so intricately done bringing three different issues and making me relate to the life's of those people out there and at the same time higlighted the zeal to survive and importance of family made this more than a romantic suspense book.
