Two More Days at Netherfield: A Pride & Prejudice Variation Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 802 ratings

How would spending a few extra days in each other’s company affect the relationship between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy? While her sister Jane is ill at Netherfield, Elizabeth overhears the proud Mr Darcy express his admiration of her and her fine eyes. Not sure what to think of his praise after all of their previous disagreements (and more flattered than she wants to admit) Elizabeth responds by teasing him, forcing Darcy to reconsider his opinion of a woman who has truly bewitched him. The ensuing day and weeks see confrontations and apologies, and the beginnings of a friendship, between Darcy and Elizabeth. But their warming acquaintance impacts the behaviour of those around them inciting jealousy, anger and malicious falsehoods. Is the strength of their emotional connexion enough to reunite them and put them back on the path to love?

Two More Days at Netherfield is a Pride and Prejudice alternate path and contains the beloved characters of Jane Austen

If they had more time in forced proximity, would it have made a difference? That is what author Heather Moll poses in a sparkling 'what if' variation on Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.

Two More Days at Netherfield opens at the point in the original story when Elizabeth Bennet visits Netherfield Park, which is being leased by handsome, charming Mr. Bingley and his guests, for the purpose of caring for her ill older sister. She has no desire to be around the denizens of the house particularly the arrogant Mr. Darcy who slighted her.

But, an overheard conversation tells her that she might not have Mr. Darcy figured out as well as she thought. Longer time in the gentleman's company including a true apology might make all the difference in the world and they are well on their way to a friendlier understanding of one another until others decide to interfere for their own purposes.

Two More Days at Netherfield was a delightful surprise. I've already previously enjoyed another variation tale from the author and liked it, but this one has the distinction of drawing my satisfaction while employing a trope I generally don't like- miscommunication being the main source of the conflict. However, there are always exceptions it seems and Heather Moll wrote the story in a way that miscommunication didn't feel contrived or merely there to soup up the drama.

This was a longer tale, but I was vested deeply for almost the entire extent. I found a few moments deeply suspenseful like when Darcy was facing a moral dilemma and I felt I was sweating it out with him or when Elizabeth was in danger from an unscrupulous rake. Between the careful build of relationships and characters, these spikes of excitement were just the right seasoning.

I look forward to reading more slightly spicy variations from a talented author.

Much like the author's other book(s), this one is well written and more of a variation than you would think considering the simple premise. In short, Elizabeth overhears Darcy compliment her while at Netherfield, she and Jane stay an extra couple of days and the pairings all understand one another's feelings better for it. After that, the story unfolds differently than you'd expect, though still mostly within the frame of the original text. It's rife with misunderstandings, but as much as I usually hate that, here I felt like each one at least had a reason behind it rather than the characters simply not talking to one another. If they don't share as much as they probably should, there's a rationale.

    Some SPOILERS ahead, though minor.

Other reviewers have had some specific complaints that I disagree with, so I'll address those here. Firstly, they pose that Elizabeth would never believe Wickham after being warned by Darcy and, while that might be true if he'd told her the WHOLE story about the villain, Darcy left out the most significant sin against him, that of Wickham's Ramsgate adventure with Georgiana. Elizabeth therefore only knew about the financial stuff and some vague accusations of being a gambler/womanizer, all things Wickham claims to feel remorseful over. Elizabeth, who has recently learned that she can be too critical of people, gives Wickham more benefit of the doubt than she should without realizing that she's being used as a tool of revenge. And, considering how early this is in their relationship (they've known each other about a month), it's not unreasonable for Darcy to have held his sister's secret back.

The second complaint I noticed was regarding Darcy's Christmas "adventure" with a courtesan and whether or not this part should be excised from the novel. While I will admit that it was difficult to read about a heartbroken Darcy considering whether or not he should try to forget Elizabeth in the arms of a professional, the misadventure had a point. Namely, that Darcy can't simply "get over" being in love nor can he replace Elizabeth, even temporarily, with a cheap imitation. (SPOILER) He didn't go through with it, btw, for those of you who are hemming and hawing over whether or not to risk it. It was a near thing, but he baulked.

Aside from those things, I admired the symmetry of the plot and the way the author worked with the source material. The story began with two extra days at Netherfield, and two more days at the end settled everything between ODC. And I thought the way the author brought Darcy and Elizabeth together again after their separation was clever; Darcy still came across her as she was traveling with the Gardiners, but the scenario was different. And Brighton was used differently, but still enough the same to nod at the original.

In any event, this was an excellent book that I'm happy to recommend. I deducted the half star cuz...geeze, hookers and the ending was a bit confusing for me. Specifically, how/when/where ODC got married; did they do it in Brighton as suggested? If so, why did the Bingleys go again with Lydia later? Just not sure how it all worked out, is all. Minor complaints in an overall wonderful story.

The Darcy and Elizabeth we all know and love remain faithful to their original characters. A few plot changes, and our favourite couple arrive at their happy ever after in a whole new way. I thoroughly enjoyed this well written, unique variation, with enough angsty-confusion to keep me gripped throughout.

The actual game changer of this story for me was Elizabeth overhearing Darcy and Miss Bingley discussing his appreciation of Elizabeth’s fine eyes and his future domestic felicity. That caused her to be flattered, and also to confront his rudeness sooner. Then they had a friendship with deeper affection grown in the time at Netherfield.

The problem of this book was the misunderstandings that took place between the ball and Bingley and Jane’s wedding. It was almost like the story was a bit reversed: Caroline Bingley kept Darcy from returning to Hertfordshire with lies, and he and Elizabeth suffered a lot until they resolved their problems at Bingley and Jane’s wedding. That part was very slow and I for sure skimmed through. I think the author needed something to make the book “interesting”, to have a beginning, middle, and end, but I wish it were shorter.

Their love story was very sweet, though. Darcy’s decision to marry her early on gave me hope that in this variation, he would not put his family and wealth in their way.

I rolled my eyes and was angry with the idiosyncrasies of Mrs Bennet and specially My Bennet. He was so annoying in this book. I also hated the almost-dalliance with a prostitute. The author knows how to build a character well.

There were no grammar errors or holes in this book, as far as I could tell. Heather Moll also always does her research well. This is perhaps my least favourite book of hers so far, but I can give nothing short of 4 stars, and if you can speed-read the middle of the book, it’s excellent.

Two more days at Netherfield illuminates the love that Darcy has for Elizabeth better than many P&P variations that I have read. It is a beautiful romance that I thoroughly recommend for those who love reading about the struggles of this much loved couple to finally end up together despite the machinations of two people in particular whose personalities are such that it is doubtful they could ever know the bliss of being in love.
    Five stars. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I love when Darcy and Elizabeth become friends earlier, in this case when Elizabeth overheard that Darcy admired her eyes, leading to his apology for the initial insult.
They then had some conversations leading to both being drawn to the other.
Wickham is his usual troublemaking self although in a different way as he realised that Elizabeth liked Darcy. Caroline also caused trouble but both got their comeuppance eventually.
These two caused some misunderstandings involving much misery for both Darcy and Elizabeth.
I don’t want to give any more spoilers so will just recommend this book.
