Under Glass And Stone: A Supernatural Gothic Mystery (Byrne House Book 1) Kindle Edition
Perfect for teen and adult fans of supernatural suspense, with a thrilling historical mystery that'll keep you guessing.
Two disappearances, over a century apart...The truth waits inside Byrne House.
For five generations, Evelyn's family has lived in the same small brick house, shadowed by the mansion across the street. Her Nana filled her childhood with stories about Byrne House: tales of missing children, of lovers gone mad. The mansion loomed every night in her dreams. Even now, at seventeen, Evelyn watches the sprawling Victorian from her second-floor bedroom, unable to explain her obsession with a house she's never been inside.
Then one of the boys in her senior class disappears. Evelyn is the last person to see him--just a pale face in Byrne House's tower window.
The police don't believe her. Even her friends think she just imagined the face in the window. Only Alex--a handsome newcomer with his own ties to Byrne House--shares her suspicions. Alex believes that this latest disappearance is tied to the mansion's long-buried past. But there's more that Alex isn't telling her. Evelyn has no idea how far she'll have to go to find the answers. Or what she'll have to remember.

From the Author
The day Milo Foster disappeared, no one could say what he'd been doing up in the tower. A few neighbors even insisted he'd never gone inside Byrne House at all. But Evelyn knew what she'd seen. She would never forget the discordant whiteness of Milo's face, small and pale as a fish in the round mouth of the tower window. Later, when Evelyn reported the sighting, she left out her unsettling first impression: that it was her own face she was seeing, about to be swallowed up by the mansion.
For as far back as she could remember, maybe ever since she'd been tall enough to see above the sill, Evelyn had liked to watch Byrne House from her second-floor bedroom across the street. When Evelyn was little, her mother asked why the sprawling Victorian fascinated her. Viv Ashwood was making Evelyn's bed and pretending to be focused on her task. But Evelyn could tell by the slow rhythm of her mom's hands that Viv was listening carefully.
"Is it because of Nana?" her mom prompted. "Is she still telling you those stories?"
He'd gotten trapped behind the walls, Nana had whispered. They could hear him knocking.
"No," Evelyn said. She didn't want to get Nana in trouble. But it wasn't just the bedtime stories, not really. "It's because of my dream. I'm trying to find the part that's missing."
Her mom had gotten very still and very quiet. She hadn't asked again.
Even now, at seventeen, Evelyn would glance over at the tower whenever she passed by her window or when she turned onto the street on her walk home from school. And always before she went to bed at night. It was a little ritual, an itch to scratch. It wasn't because of the dreams anymore--her nightly dreams of Byrne House had eventually turned to a nightmare and then morphed into something worse. Something she didn't like to think about. But those dreams had stopped years ago and still she watched, unable to say why. She knew better than to mention the habit around her mother.
Until the day Evelyn saw Milo, the tower window was always dark. A hole punched into the stone. Reginald Byrne lived alone in there, a forgotten king in his walled-up castle.
Evelyn never saw anyone go in or out of Byrne House's wrought-iron gate except the cleaning lady. And Mrs. Lake only came the last day of each month. She'd walk over from her own home several streets away and stay all day. Then she'd reappear just as darkness fell, red curls tucked into a wool cap, bag hitched into her side as she marched down the mansion's front path. An official emissary returning from a journey into a foreign land.
On July 31--the day Milo would disappear and all the trouble would start--Mrs. Lake spent only a few minutes inside the mansion before she ran back out, screaming.
Up until that moment, Evelyn had been lying in bed, immersed in a horror novel. Her window was open, curtains lifting and falling with each breath of wind. Evelyn's room was tiny, just big enough for a twin bed and an antique secretary desk that doubled as a dresser. Her collection of vintage and thrift-store clothes was tucked carefully inside. She also had a narrow closet, but she certainly couldn't put her clothes in there. That was where she stored all her books.
"Help! Please, help!"
Evelyn froze, and her hands tightened on her book. The cry had come from the street. Then there was a slamming door. Evelyn tossed her book on the bed and rushed to the open window.
Mrs. Lake was running across Byrne House's yard, crying. She yanked open the iron gate and ran into the street, then started turning back and forth like she couldn't make up her mind where to go.
A bike turned onto the avenue. Immediately the rider had to swerve to avoid hitting Mrs. Lake. Evelyn recognized his closely-shorn brown hair and chunky black-frame glasses. It was Milo Foster. He must've been on his way to visit his grandma. In one fluid motion, Milo jumped off the bike and left it lying by the curb. He went to Mrs. Lake, who kept shouting and gesturing at the house behind her.
Milo seemed to get the gist. He ran up the mansion's front steps and tried the door. It wouldn't open. He said something else to Mrs. Lake, who was sobbing actively now. She pointed him to the side of the house. Milo ran in that direction.
All this had happened in the span of a minute, maybe two. Evelyn grabbed her phone and ran downstairs. By the time she got outside, a handful of neighbors were streaming out of their homes. Several held phones to their ears.
She paused at the sidewalk, looking up at the mansion. She couldn't explain her hesitation, only that something seemed different. Strange. Her pulse seemed unsteady, too fast. Now too slow. Then, from the corner of her eye, she spotted movement near the top of the tower.
It was gone. The tower's round window was just reflections laid on top of black. Nothing there.
Her eyes traced the mansion's rough stone facade and the curve of the porch railing. Then back to the tower with its cone-shaped roof.
There--the curtains in the tower's highest window were shifting. Now, an oval of white appeared within the larger black circle. Like the opening of a milky, reptilian eye.
A face.
For a surreal split second, Evelyn imagined she was seeing her own reflection, though the angles were all wrong. But then she saw the square-frame glasses, and the illusion dissipated. It was Milo again. Why had he gone inside? Was Mr. Byrne alright?
A siren whined, the pitch climbing. An ambulance with flashing lights skidded down the road. The loiterers on the street scattered toward the park, and the ambulance's tires squealed to a stop a few yards from the Byrne House gate. A patrol car pulled up a heartbeat later.
She'd only glanced away for a moment. But when Evelyn looked up at the tower window again, Milo's face was gone.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2021I really enjoyed this book. I thought it was well written and the author drew the reader into this mysterious family and house. The storyline has a little romance that’s clean along with history of the town and families. The looming and mysterious house with a history of its own with secrets only kept within its walls really sets the tone for this book. I loved that this story was unique and draws the reader into the story. I felt like I cared about the characters and to see how their histories intertwined with each other.
I felt like I could not stop reading when I really got into the book. There is a bit of backstory in the beginning but it is needed to know how everything fits together. Usually I can pick out what is going on pretty fast in a mystery, but with this story it took me almost to the end. This is actually two books in one, so there is a different mystery in the second book that still includes all characters in the first book.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a mystery with bits of paranormal ideas. I am looking forward to reading more by A.N. Willis.
I believe Willis did a great job creating this town, history, and connected families into a really good read. Thank you to BookSirens and Observatory Books for allowing me to read a free advance copy for my honest opinion.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2020The author did a great job with a spooky story and great characters. I just loved Evelyn and Alex and rooted for them the whole time. I like that they were not perfect characters. The two timelines worked very well.
Very gripping. There may have been a tad too many characters that bogged it down in a few places, but not often. It was a fun, fast-paced read, and I've already got the second book in the series to read tomorrow!!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2020A tale of mysterious disappearances laced with intriguing characters, Under Glass and Stone is one of those books you just cannot put down! When seventeen-year-old Evelyn watches the massive Victorian Bryne House from her bedroom window day after day, the drama is just getting started. Inside the house are the answers to rumors of missing children and heartbroken lovers who’ve lost their minds. One of Evelyn’s classmates is the next to disappear, and the race is on to crack the secrets held in the house. Enlisting Alex, a hunky newcomer, Evelyn is fiercely determined to find answers before she herself is swallowed up by the mysteries of the house.
Willis writes with clarity and depth as she helps us get to know each one of the characters. Though not typically a lover of young adult fiction, I found the narrative totally engrossing. The gang of teenagers involved in the drama is revealed deftly, with each one possessing genuinely interesting and authentic quirks. In keeping with a true nail-biter, the twists and turns of the novel kept me engaged and anxious to find out where the story was heading next. Just when I thought I knew where the story was headed, a new detail was revealed, sending me headlong into the next chapter. A heart stopping read from start to finish, Under Glass and Stone won’t disappoint.
Thank you to the author for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2020I enjoyed this story for its pooling of the historical past and weaving it into the present around Bryne House. As soon as Alex was introduced into the story I wanted to see him paired with Evelyn. It was always clear that she and Milo would only ever be friends, from her prospective. The mystery was intriguing only until the crystal substance was revealed, then it became entirely predictable, but I still wanted to finish the story to learn the outcome. The writing was good; the plot holes unfortunate.
There were several plot holes, and plot holes always diminish the story.
-When Alex and Evelyn were being chased in the tunnels, she drops the flashlight and it goes out. Why didn't Alex pull his smartphone from his back pocket and use the flashlight feature? Instead he's fumbling around on the floor for the flashlight. As for the dropped flashlight, it's dropped at least two different times in the book, and neither time does the bulb go out. Really? Any time I've ever dropped a conventional flashlight the bulb needs to be replaced, but they just find it and it turns back on.
-Evelyn drops the backpack as they're escaping through the tunnels after being under Jake's house. It contains both their smartphones, the mirror and the only key to Bryne House, but two chapters later, Alex pulls out the key to Bryne House to go there. The backpack had not been found yet and a big point had been made that there was only the one key remaining, so where did Alex get the key?
-Finally, when Evelyn and Jake were strapped to the table in the lab, Evelyn was released, she fought with Denise, he was under the spell of the mirror, and she and Jake could escape, why did they not strap Denise to the table instead of wrapping his wrists with a big elastic band that he could get out off and come after them?
Many plot holes, but entirely clean of any typos.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2021I picked up this book with the expectation of a fun haunted house story. What I found was a fantastic creepy and hauntingly moving story of a house and its tragic past. The mysteries of Byrne house and those who lived there have once again surfaced. Its now up to Evelyn and Alex to discover the truth if the are strong enough to survive.
Well written with a steady pace anyone who loves spooky mysteries will enjoy this book! I consider the book to be great for young adults to adults who read YA books. The characters are believable, driven and fun. I'm looking forward to reading the final book in this dualogy.

4.0 out of 5 stars weird but very good
An interesting story with many questions open for book two regarding the how and why.
Enjoyable characters, interesting insights into the past set in the same story and full of important friendships

4.0 out of 5 stars Atmospheric and engaging
As someone who usually reads a few books each week, my consumption of literature has been radically reduced by the covid pandemic. I can’t concentrate. I’ve started books and put them down. I knew it would take something truly gripping and engaging to keep my attention. Thankfully, this book most definitely hits the spot.
The atmosphere is built up effectively from the outset. The characters are well-rounded and although there were times that I couldn’t exactly relate to their motivation and decision making, I still found them believable. The story had many elements of plots and tropes that have been seen before but AN Willis has created a fresh and interesting novel that feels new and exciting.
I would recommend this book and I would definitely read more of the author’s work.

4.0 out of 5 stars There is more to Byrne House than what's on the surface...
‘Under Glass and Stone’ by A. N. Willis was an interesting combination of a teen romance meets mystery. Byrne House has had an odd hold and fascination to the main lead Evelyn, whose mother wants to her have nothing to do with the old house. The plot picks up when a classmate, Milo, vanishes. Evelyn was one of the last to see him running into Byrne hours but no one wants to listen to her. She decides to investigate herself. Her search for truth leads to meeting Alex, a teen around her age who also shares a similar tie to the house and the mysteries it holds. The deeper they delve into the past, courtesy of letters from the wife of the man responsible for so much of the strangeness lurking within the walls (and beneath the floor) of the house, the more danger seems to follow. There were times the story felt as though it slowed down or repeated a little, but the touches of the supernatural kept the reader wondering what was going on. Overall, it enticed you to discover what hid beneath the glass and stones of the Byrne House.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
I loved this novel. It kept me page-turning way into the night. The characters are well written with their faults and their own traits. Loved this and looking forward to reading the next chapter in the characters lives.
