Undercover Magic (Dragon's Gift: The Valkyrie Book 1) Kindle Edition
In a world of controlled magic, I’m an Unknown. Deadly power, little control. I’m only alive because I pay a Blood Sorcerer to keep me hidden. But when he comes to collect on the debt I can’t pay, one of his goons slams me with a deadly curse. Suddenly, I’m out of options and out of time.
When I’m given a rare chance to join the elite Undercover Protectorate and train at their academy to become an investigator, I have a way to hunt the cure for the curse. They have resources I don’t. Easy, since I’m broke.
Seems like a good plan, right? At least, until they tell me Cade will be joining me on my hunt for the Blood Sorcerer. He's an actual Celtic war god--and the hottest guy I’ve ever seen. The catch? I can’t let him know that I’m an Unknown, or I’m out on my ass and deader than Hades.
Undercover Magic is a fast-paced urban fantasy with a kick-butt heroine, a tough hero, and magic that will knock your socks off.

About the author

Before becoming a writer, Linsey was an archaeologist who studied shipwrecks in all kinds of water, from the tropics to muddy rivers (and she has a distinct preference for one over the other). After a decade of tromping around in search of old bits of stuff, she settled down to start penning her own adventure novels and is freaking delighted that people seem to like them. Since life is better with a little (or a lot of) magic, she writes urban fantasy and paranormal romance.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2020This author is a prolific author, and follows a formula for most of her books, and it works. Again, we are seeing a spin-off series from The Dragon’s Gift World and Magic Bend is back here also, although it’s not the primary focus here. This series follows two sisters, Bree and Ana whose magic is considered “Unknown,” but I have an inkling what it may be – I’ll see if I’m right as we go. Bree’s love interest here is Cade, a very powerful earth walking god. The slices of mythology is woven into this book and the character development is off to a good beginning. As with most of this author’s works, each book you will peel back layers of the characters and learn more and more. I saw the growth in the sisters as the book went on and am looking forward to more. This book is full of action, strong characters with a bit of sass and some fun magic that kept me up reading a bit too late.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2023Pursued by an unethical mage, Bree and Ana find themselves cursed at his hands. When the Paranormal Protectorate comes to their aid, the sisters discover that he’s willing to do anything to get his hands on them.
Bree teams up with Cade, a member of the protectorate as the two of them search for the cure, and for the mage, trying to get rid of the danger he poses.
But Bree and Ana have secrets, some they don’t even know the answers to themselves, and they can’t risk them getting out…
Set a few years after the Dragon Gifts series, this is set in the same world, and even features some cameos from our favourite Firesouls. We first met Bree and Ana in those books when they helped them with their quests, and there is also a prequel novella to this series, which can be had from the author’s website. It’s not necessary to have read it, or the Dragon’s gift books, but they can help set the scene for this series.
There is an unnamed Big Bad hunting the sisters, which is part of an ongoing storyline that sees only a little resolution in this book. The smaller storyline is complete, leaving us with no cliffhanger and only a small book hook regarding the bigger story.
This book is mostly a setup for the series featuring Bree, but it does have plenty of action, adventure, and travelling magical style.
There’s a hint of romance, some mystery, and lots of magical adventures with battles (she *is* hanging around with Cade so that seems inevitable really)- making for a fast and engrossing read.
An enjoyable return to the Dragon’s Gift universe, and a fun, fast read for urban fantasy fans.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2017Love, love, love this first installment of Bree's story! I found Bree and her sister Ana very interesting characters in Nix, Cass and Del's series, and was thrilled when LH gave them their own series! I've been eagerly anticipating the release of this first book and it didn't disappoint!
Cade is beyond hot, which I wasn't sure was even possible after the incredibly sexy Aiden, Roarke, and Ares from the original three Dragon's Gift series. But LH definitely pulled it off! Bree and Cade are as unique and interesting as believable individuals as Cass/Aiden, Del/Roarke and
The characters truly feel alive, the plot is intriguing and the writing flows smoothly and effortlessly. I can find myself getting lost in the book's world and story! I have read literally tens of thousands of books, so I can be difficult to please, but I found this book utterly absorbing and delightful! Really looking forward to the next installment of Bree's story!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2019I confess I haven't read a lot of urban fantasy, but took the plunge. I wasn't disappointed. It starts off in the thick of things, with the outlaw sisters battling sand monsters in the desert. From there the action keeps on building. I liked the characters, and was definitely curious to learn more of their origins (they're Unknowns, but what exactly? Even they don't know.) There's a bit of a love interest there, too, but it's not eating up all the oxygen in the story, so that's appreciated. The author also has a nice way with words in describing all the settings of the magical cities, the desert, the Scottish Highlands and Venice. It's kind of an Indiana Jones meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with the history and the badass female protagonist. Also appreciated the author's little additional note at the end, explaining in some greater depth some of the entities and locations encountered. (There was a real Vampire of Venice, etc...) A fun read and I'll definitely check out more of Linsey Hall's other works, including this series.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2017This is a quick and fast-paced read, an adventure story filled with magic set in Scotland and Italy, the main character's reliable and collected (always a narrator I appreciate.) There's action throughout the book and lots of fighting sequences.
Not really any romance which was smart, the book is way too short to introduce a romance since the largest chunk of the story is only played out over a few days. Though, Bree and the Celtic war god spend most of the book together so there's that.
I liked the writing style and characters. Not sure if I'll continue the series as I don't necessary feel attached to the story, but I did enjoy it as a quick read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning read
Wow, did not see the series heading in this direction. Great to see more adventures, sexual tension, unknown magical abilities and a new stronghold in Scotland, more danger and discoveries just around the corner, and to see these sisters have a story for them selves rather than just being back ground characters in chapters of earlier books.
Thank you Linsey for yet another great read, taking me on adventures I think I'd love to go on and I wish more and more I could be a magical person in the world you've created

5.0 out of 5 stars Great new series!!!
This is s really enjoyable new series and like always Linsey Hall keeps the reader interested in the book from the very first page. Once I started reading the book I could not put it down! I love Bree...she is strong and powerful and confident. I enjoy the relationship between Bree and her sister, and her connection with Cade is great! Got to love meeting the God of War!! I can’t wait to read more about Bree and see if she can control her powers more and to see if her and Ann find their sister. Great first book in a fantastic new series. Highly recommended!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Really great reading
This is an extremely well crafted adventure! I enjoyed every page. The author's inclusion of historic places and godlike beings made it even more interesting. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes a good paranormal adventure yarn.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good action
3.5 stars. I liked the plot, the action and the characters but I was a little disappointed in the relationships. They were emotionless. Sisters Bree and Ana have power and abilities that help them earn a living but now someone is planning to take over their power and lives. They have a choice of joining the Protectorate which will help them get their lives back or go it alone. The action is fast and the characters are varied and fun. A good start to a series.
