Unforgivable: Shielded Hearts book 6 Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 457 ratings

There are no rules to starting over…

Running away from his messy divorce hasn’t brought Ira Fragale the peace he craves. If he's going to get his life together, he needs to pull himself together and clean up the mess he’s made of his life.

Bartending is an easy gig, Cameron McCulloch enjoys the friendships he's developed since his family rejected him for being gay, but he longs for more.

Cam’s had a crush on the older man for a while, but Ira only has one-night stands. He never has do-overs; Ira may be older, but that doesn't mean he knows what he’s doing.

When Ira falls ill Cam cares for him, and their relationship slowly begins to shift.

The more Cam learns about Ira, the more he is drawn to him. Will the older man finally open up and let him in?

Unforgivable is a dual POV about a wise younger man and an older man who could learn a thing or two. The Shielded Hearts series follows a different couple in each book as they stop killers, unravel a human trafficking ring and fall in love.

About the Author

Author/imaginator & photographer (also rare Pacific Northwest Native), Elle grew up in Seattle, WA., with the Cascade Mountain range to the east and Olympics to the west.

Elle has between three and five cats, depending on who's counting. She's lived in four states, London England, and Hong Kong; always knows what time it is, and has little problem finding parking even in the most difficult places.

Elle's new series Accidental Roots is set in the Skagit Valley of Western Washington and made its debut spring of 2017. Writing has always been a passion but not something she was able to take seriously until recently. Now her head is full of ideas and not enough time in each day.

Broken, broody, mysterious, swoony, inclusive; those are my tropes.

It’s my grandmother’s fault! Alice Lee bribed me to read with a Nancy Drew box set—and changed my life forever.

Love at first binge read.

By the time high school rolled around I’d already discovered romantic suspense and gothic romance, and I’ve never looked back. What can I say? My love of mystery and suspense started early and runs deep.

Is there anything better than a character who by the end of the story manages to redeem/heal themselves enough to fall in love? No, there isn’t.

Fast forward to 2017 when, with a shaky finger, I pressed the Publish button for the first time. I’ve never regretted it. I love writing and telling stories that others enjoy, it’s a dream come true.

What else? I love both cats and dogs. Star Wars and Star Trek. Pineapple on pizza, and have a cribbage habit my husband encourages. We live in a log cabin near Hood Canal in Washington State, if the sky is clear at night the milky way is visible. But most often I’m inside devouring yet another book!

I would have to say that there is less of the mystery aspect to this entry in the Accidental Roots series than in the previous installments but its no less heart-grabbing. Skagit, Washington is definitely an interesting place to live.

Part of you will want to hate Ira Fragale for leaving his wife and son behind but he's really not a bad guy because his actions are more about punishing himself than any level of abandoning them. Cameron McCulloch on the other hand makes you want to wrap him up in a bear hug from his first appearance and never let go. On first inspection these two don't appear to fit on any level but truth is the more you know them the more you realize not only are they a perfect fit they really are made for each other. I found myself rooting for these two from beginning to end.

As I said above, the mystery aspect is not as forefront in Unforgivable as with earlier books but there is still a level of wanting the truth to come out that had me on the edge of my seat. I didn't read this in one sitting but that was down more to outside forces than want, had I no interruptions then I definitely would've read this from cover to cover in one go.

For those wondering about the reading order of Accidental Roots, well for the most part these are standalones especially these later ones but personally I'm glad I read them in the order they were written. Would I have been lost had I started with Ira and Cam's story? No, not at all but there are a few previous characters popping up that I'm glad I knew who they were and what they went through but I wouldn't have been lost in anyway or carrying a feeling of missing something had I not known the first five entries in the series.

I only write reviews of books that are written so well that I want others to know about them, which is true about this one, but with a different twist.
I am happily on book 6 of Elle Keaton’s Shielded Heart series, but am only on page 4 of this book.
    And that is the point.
I have REALLY enjoyed the first five books in the series. Each of them was a great read. This morning, when I started Unforgivable and landed on page 4, I was already captivated by it. I stopped and thought about why. I am very picky about the authors I read. The books I love have to be GOOD, not just popular or highly rated.
But, reading this book, by the time I had reached page 4, the author had already described enough about one of the main characters, who he was, what kind of person he was, what his problem was, and why I hoped he could solve it. In four pages. He had appeared in previous books in the series, and I had been sure he was awful.
But Elle had caught my interest and involved me in the story without rushing or just screaming it at me. She had cunningly drawn me in.
And THAT, my friends, is an author you want to read.

This is the slowest so far but still very good. Had a bit of less plausible threads or maybe less developed supporting cast. Ira rode his bike religiously then suddenly never did. The art thing sorta came out of nowhere or maybe I missed the development. The bad guys were a bit underdeveloped.

After a year of avoidance, older man decides younger isn't "too young", but it's out of the blue. Author gives no hint, even though this is dual POV. Also, older man's ex comes for a surprise visit, yet he is obligated to change his work schedule and not be late - ridiculous expectation.

Ira has a unfortunate common thing shove down his own wants & desires to be the honored & expected adult responsibility. One thing in life if you are not happy no one is & it will hurt everyone around you - so its not selfish to follow your dreams! IRA divorced & 1 child leaves his past for a new future. He an artist and taking his life back & discovering his future. Cameron has tragic past and his present is just as disturbing. Not the time to moon over an older man. Secrets keep this story unraveling, family, friends, past and a peak at future. M/M V2 hate crimes, murder but not graphic details S2 romantic at heart. After meeting both of these guys in past books, it was good to get to know them. After a fling, they are put together again by Cameron just being who he is and being sweet. He had to help Ira get better. Ira knows he was full of excuses when he let Cameron down 2 years ago. Now he may be willing to open up and start living. To forgive himself for past mistakes and give in to his desire for Cameron. Cameron knows he should protect himself from Ira doing the same thing again but he can’t resist Ira. When Cameron faces a scary situation, Ira realizes he wants to be there for Cameron and Cameron thinks it may be nice to have someone in his corner, more than a friend. They both end up with more family than they ever thought they would have. I remember in a past book that Ira was a translator for some victims but don’t think it was explained how he knew the other language, I may have missed it and wouldn’t know the difference if I didn’t read the other book(s).

I have loved every couple in the Shielded Hearts series but I
I especially loved that Cameron and Ira finally realized how perfect they were together. Each book has a mystery embedded in the story which I try to figure out ahead of time. I strongly recommend this series to all. Sad that only two books remain.

1.0 out of 5 stars didn’t like it

I have to say reading this story was hard work and I realised it because I didn’t like the characters Ira starts off and his behaviour is awful this is a man who treats people so badly his wife ( who then seems to get to be as bad as him) his son ( who by half way through this book should still be in therapy has now has two parents who don’t come across as great) Cameron ( who starts of as a lovely character but then some of his behaviour just doesn’t track with his life experiences) Ira is selfish even when he’s supposed to being a better person he doesn’t bring out a better characteristics in Cameron. I liked Cameron the beginning of the book the I didn’t the further the book went despite what had happened to him. There were subplots that didn’t get explored (why can he speak Russian) ?? He helped speak to all the children who had been trafficked he’d been involved with Adam Klay on that but didn’t seem to acknowledge that or how hard that must’ve been. He’s doesn’t seem to understand Sterling is protective of Cameron yet he’s an adult male with a child of a similar age that just doesn’t ring true and 43/44 (not old) whatever age he is he acts like he’s the body of a sixty year old with the emotional age of a teenager not a grown up man who has been the main parent of his son for the first 18 years of his life. I didn’t like the personality annihilation of previous characters as seem to happen in this multi series books hoping the next book will be better I liked the previous ones much more too than this one.

3.0 out of 5 stars An up and down ride

I read my personal copy of this book for Wicked Reads.

Ira moves to Skagit after his marriage of 20 years ends when his wife finds out he is gay. He stops all contact with this wife and son and spends the next two years nailing every young guy in town including bartender Cameron. But Ira uses their 20 odd year age difference as an excuse to brush Cameron off.

At first I judged Ira pretty harshly. I was no fond of him at all. Partially from the fact that he cuts his son completely out of his life and partially because after his weekend with Cameron he keeps going into the bar Cameron works at to pick up guys. Cameron has had a difficult life and I wanted good things for him and I wasn’t sure about Ira.

Turns out I was too harsh on Ira. When his wife and son return to his life and we get more of a picture of Ira’s life before Skagit my view of his started to soften. And as Ira and Cameron start seeing each other again I realised they guys are a really good fit and their age difference means nothing and I’d changed my turn about Ira.

The story is more than romance and relationship dramas, issues from their past put Cameron and Ira in danger and this danger helps bring them closer together.

For me Unforgivable was an up and down ride which I really enjoyed. I think the troubled road that Ira and Cameron take made the ending to the story that much sweeter. 3 solid stars.
