Unorthodox Therapy: Dark Psychological Romance Suspense Thriller (The Unorthodox Trilogy Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 477 ratings

A tale of addiction, pleasure and pain, love and loss.
She was his boss at work and his submissive at all times.
LINA
I'd never noticed him before. He was just a lonely, scared boy when I hired him. I was too busy to notice the lust in his eyes. Now I'm at his feet begging for every bit of pleasure and pain he'll unleash on me.

THOMAS
She enthralled me. Her body. Her mind. Her wicked laughter and unreadable eyes. She was out of my league yet I knew what she longed for. I only had two months to kill her nicotine addiction and make her crave me. I'd use every trick I had to claim her as mine.

WARNING! This book is intended for mature audiences. This is a full-length novel featuring steamy scenes, an alpha submissive female and her younger Dominant. It's a slow-burn love story between two flawed people who grow together, a sensual journey to their darkest desires. It's an emotional roller coaster, intense and insane, with many twists and turns.

The book is part 1 of a trilogy, with a guaranteed HEA at the end of the series. Bonus content: Chapter 1 of Unorthodox Chemistry.

All the characters are over 18 years old. Please, read the Warning at the front part of the book before you decide to purchase it.

Review

"The BDSM sex is hot and steamy, but let me tell you, about 3/4 of the way through, a sudden turn of events had me flipping pages so fast I nearly blew up my Kindle. By the end, I was breathless and dying to read the next installment." -Pandora Spocks, author of The Dream Dominant series

"Amazon needs to up the stars on this one."
-Amazon Customer

"There is so much substance in this book, it far passes just an erotic read. The author dives into the human psychology and spirit of each character and leaves us wondering about ourselves as well. If this is any indication of how this trilogy is going play out, I think we have found a serious top five series."
-T London, Crystal's Many Reviewers

"Unorthodox Therapy is like nothing I've ever read in this genre. It transcends erotica. Beautifully crafted characters. Emotional. Heart-pounding suspense. Lilah E. Noir has proven she should be among the great erotic writers of our pasts."
-R.B. O'Brien, author of the Thorne and Imogen series

"What a rollercoaster ride! This book was fascinating to read. The complexity of the story line along with well-developed characters was predictable and unpredictable at the same time."
-Krystal Amora Reviews

"I had a love/hate relationship with the story. It drew out some very strong and sometimes very raw emotions. The writing is excellent and the plot so strong. The characters are so strong and well developed. The super strong heroine submissive and the strong hero Dom who must deal with his own insecurities and compassion in order to be what he feels his partner needs."
-Goodreads Reader

"Intelligently-written, well-drawn characters and an original premise top the list but only scratch the surface."
-Shelby Kent-Stewart, author of the Wicked Tails series "One of the most refreshing and notable things about Unorthodox Therapy--which Noir states is not a romance, though it certainly leans that way--is that her goal is to subvert and invert many of those tired tropes, while still telling a love story."- LN Bey, author of Blue"This author was able to describe places, actions and emotions as if I was right there with the two participants. OMG! This is an erotic read! It sucked me in, titillated my mind and aroused my senses."-PaintedLady

Long gone are the days when Thomas Jett was a fresh out of high school kid who was hired as Lina Riley's PA. In his place is a confident Dom who play's Lina like a maestro. In giving her the tools to deal with her insecurities and her addiction he gives her freedom. This mild mannered young man who was slack jawed the first time he met Lina fulfills all of his fantasies as he dominates her. Lina, in giving up control and giving him her submission is able to find a peace that has eluded her. In man's world, Lina is an anomaly. She saavy, successful, driven and successful and there are those who wznt to take her down. A life altering, gut wrenching event breaks Lina both mentally and physically leaving her a shell of her former self. No matter how hard he tries, he finally realizes the only way he can help her is to walk away.

This is an intensely emotional romance. These two characters while strong and successful are both dealing with emotions and flaws dating back to their childhoods. Mistrust and jealousy afflicts them both at times. While they do love each other sometimes that's just not enough.

BDSM (I gather, from reading) is very much about one person putting themselves in the capable, careful hands of another. Unorthodox Therapy presents the same basic situation, with author Lilah E. Noir playing the dominant role and the reader submitting to the various pains and pleasures she chooses to inflict on us for our own ultimate enjoyment. Two lead characters, Lina and Thomas, bind us to the narrative with their intense personalities, and once she has us caught securely in place through the characters, she proceeds to lash and tantalize our senses with sensuously crafted erotic scenes and a sometimes-stinging whip of a plot.

The initial hook is that Lina, a tightly wound Silicon Valley CEO, falters in the latest of her string of attempts to quit smoking. Her sky-high personal expectations simply keep her under too much pressure for her to ignore the temptation of her one weakness, nicotine. Enter Thomas, a longtime employee of the firm who started as Lina's personal assistant years ago and therefore knows her much better than she realizes. He offers her an "unorthodox therapy" that he has used to help others overcome their weaknesses in the past, and despite her misgivings at their age difference and employer-employee relationship, she takes him up on it.

His method, naturally, involves drawing her into the world of dominance and submission, inverting their power roles from years as boss and subordinate.
Lilah Noir warns us in an up-front author's note that this will be a challenging and sometimes dark story, and the faint-hearted should take her at her word. Although the early part of the novel provides only occasional foreshadowing of the perils that await both Thomas and Lina in their exploration, by the end, the book will take them both well past their breaking points.

Both Thomas and Lina intrigued me with their complexities, and their relationship feels real because both characters are so well drawn, and because Noir cunningly alternates the narration between their two perspectives. Since we see with both characters' eyes, we get the full depth of tension between them, and understand as the story unfolds why each of them holds back with a certain reserve -- and how that mutual reserve leaves them both vulnerable to dangers within and outside of their secret relationship.

A variety of satellite characters play roles in the action too ... but these I found less compelling. The ambitious vice president who wants to overthrow Lina as CEO comes off as little more than a leering, moustache-twirling villain, and there's an angry, abrasive programmer who takes it upon himself to become Thomas's nemesis in a thoroughly over-the-top manner. Within a story that's anything but straightforward, these antagonists felt out of place to me in their singular fixations. Inevitably, they threaten the main characters with catastrophe, though, which provides for some of the most gripping twists in Lina and Thomas's relationship.

The book is the start of a trilogy, but it's a satifying read on its own, and definitely delivered enough that I want to see where Noir takes the story from here.

Unorthodox Therapy is a book that I could not put down. The story, in a nutshell, is that Lina is a tightly controlled business owner who uses smoking as a stress reliever but is trying to kick the habit. Thomas is a computer programmer and experienced Dom who secretly has feelings for her. Having had success in the past freeing a submissive from a bad habit, and seeing a chance to make his dreams come true, he offers to do the same for Lina, who has no idea what she's in for in this BDSM relationship.

The writing is great, the characterizations solid, especially Thomas, a likable, sweet guy who's Master persona can be sadistic and cruel. This story is intense, erotic, and emotional and although I wouldn't call it romantic in the conventional sense, the characters have a real connection and develop deep feelings for each other. There is also a mystery/suspense aspect to the story that culminates in some harrowing edge of your seat moments. I highly recommend reading book two as well, which is basically a prequel to this story. Unorthodox Dom details Thomas's journey from novice to experienced Dom and takes place prior to the events in book one and adds even more depth to the character of Thomas. 4.5 stars.

I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

I am not sure if I liked this book or not. I have never been a fan of bondage and dominance books. I can't understand how people allow to be abused. I don't think that I will be reading more of this author work.

What starts out as a ruse to help the boss quit smoking. Thomas tells Lina he can help her. But, she will have to do what he says. This book is so moving, heart-stopping, with heavy role play. It is hot raw sex with a submissive giving total surrender. The greatest gift a sub can give there Dom/Domme.
There are three books in this set. All three are worth reading and maybe re-reading. Just to make sure you didn't miss something during the first read. The only warning I give is, if you are weak of heart or mind, then take your time reading this wonderful story.

A powerful story of Lina, a CEO and Thomas a Dom. I embraced this dark BDSM story from moment I read the first chapter. It is not for the faint hearted. I thoroughly enjoyed reading how the characters developed within the story. Well written. Thank you Lilah. I look forward to the next book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Walking a tightrope
Reviewed in Australia on April 23, 2017
To me, this reads as a smart expose of addiction – of giving over to weakness – the unorthodox therapy like using a sledge-hammer to kill an ant. Lina is an amazing character – shocking and real. Frightening actually. It’s intriguing that such an assertive and successful woman could be susceptible to these deep submissive tendencies. The thrill of the sexual high felt like a tightrope walk to me – beneath, a cavern of utter misery that she was bound to fall into. What further impressed me about this story was a subtle undertone: the exposing of dominance as a sickness that controls the Dom. That totally dominates them and is seemingly weakness not strength. I’m not buying into the key relationship here as being any kind of romantic at all – more so a couple of junkies clinging to each other. I found this to be a powerful human drama and a harrowing read. It’s brilliant.

2.0 out of 5 stars It started out promising
Reviewed in Canada on July 30, 2020
I enjoyed about first third of this book. It was fun sassy and nothing serious. The next 2/3 was just full of insecurity and graphic violence. The main character spent every other paragraph constantly flip flopping between wanting to be with Thomas and not being with Thomas. It was actually irritating to read then came the graphic violence which isn't something I look for in this genre. This author is going the classic, cliff hanger to stretch into a trilogy that doesn't need to be one so people will buy more books. Honestly a good bdsm short story is about on par with this book - you can save yourself some money and skip it.
