Varadharajan Ramesh's "Tales With A Twist", is a delectable collection of stories that has more twists and turns than hairpin bends on a treacherous mountain paths. Chicanery, Carnage and Calumny wreak havoc in this ingenious set of short tales. The book begins on a hilarious and heartwarming note with the story "Repairing Cushions" where a six year old boy has his frustrated father in knots due to his antics. But if the reader is warming herself up for more endearing stories, she is in for a shock! "Innocence" a chilling tale set in the dictatorial regime of Korea, and involving a pair of siblings will jolt the reader out of her reverie. "Mariposa" has shades of Bollywood romance to it, while "Komberi Mookan" is one of the finest tales in the book involving an usurious village landlord and a diligent young female teacher in the village school.

From Space Stations to serial killers and from time travel to tenacious grandfathers, "Tales with a Twist" is one collection to savour! Just loved it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Crisp, engaging read

    4.5 stars

17 well-crafted stories, in different genres and styles, make this anthology by Varadharajan Ramesh a delectable read. As the title suggests, all the stories are connected with the common thread of twists and turns yet they are entirely different in theme and treatment. Some stories touch the readers with their poignancy, some thrill with the ingenuity of the criminals while others leave them appalled by the depravity of human minds. The writer astonishes with his skilful portrayal of his characters who are fallible, flawed and thus very real. His words are not preachy yet they make you think with their subtle, inherent messages.
Difficult to pick a few (because each story delights with a unique flavour) but I must mention Repairing Cushions, Mariposa, Dependent, Good Ol' Coop, Lonely as my favourites. Fast pace and gripping narration make it a must read book.

4.0 out of 5 stars The title rings true! Every tale has a twist!

This short story anthology, sweet and spicy, is a panoply of flavorful surprises. The stories walk a straight line until each one them takes an unanticipated bend, and you dive-in, head-on, blindsided towards the finish line with the lingering after taste of delight or pity or shock or shiver down the spine. I am not into thriller or mystery or horror, yet I thoroughly enjoyed these stories so craftily concealed by benign settings or relatable characters. I paced out my reading, one at a time, and could definitely appreciate the nuances better. I feel tempted to pick favorites, but I won't. It takes immense creativity to conjure such a cornucopia of settings, characters and plot twist that evoke distinct emotions at the end of each story. This is one of those rare short story collections where one story doesn't seem segued into another, or where one character doesn't spring from the shadow or afterglow of another. Each story is unique and fleshed out well. Some stories by the author reminded me of Satyajit Ray's shorts. Do give this scintillating surprise package a read, you won't regret it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Read!
Reviewed in India on September 3, 2020
This anthology is a delightful read! There is not a moment lost in contemplation or dread because the subjects are diverse and 17 stories is a L-O-T! All of 64 pages, the book packs a punch!

From unrequited love to serial killer, from time travel to a kid's blabber, from superhumans to ghosts and more such variety, the book is a delectable cocktail of topics! I have recently become inclined at guessing the end of thriller/mystery etc. books but the author has written each of the stories so well, that I let the book take me for a ride. There is a certain joy in simply sitting back and relishing the creativity outpour.

I am in awe of the mind that has set its work to stone here. An absolutely must read for each and every reader out there.

Looking forward to more of your craft, Varadharajan! Thank you for the twist in my reading spree!

ps - My absolute favorite takeaway from the book has been the title to each of the stories. Such a cunning play of words!

The book is a delightful collection of 17 short stories, all with some or other kind of twists at the end. However, none of them are abrupt, jarring, or out of place. The language is simple and easy to read. That increases the reading speed quite a bit. It took me less than an hour to finish the book, and I was smiling at the end of it.
Be it the cute little kid, a disguised superhero, or a helpless woman, each story has something for every reader. If you are having a reader's block, try this book. There will be one story you'll connect with, and that'll clear your block.
    Overall, a fast-paced engaging read.

4.0 out of 5 stars A well packed heterogeneous collection

Well paced and well packed with great punches. All stories truly live up to the name given to the book. There is a huge variety that has been blended together. Compelling characters and tight plots are dominating. Some of the stories that made me sit up and take note are 'Innocence' 'Time Travel' and ' Good Ol' Coop' . Definitely worth a read.
