Van Gogh in Love: A (not so!) romantic Van Gogh Biography (Secrets of Van Gogh Book 4) Kindle Edition
Van Gogh in Love tells the story of Vincent van Gogh's longing for love and family, exploring the lesser-known area of the artist's love life. Matters of love were always on Van Gogh's mind, and were inextricably linked with other aspects of his life. Van Gogh in Love focuses on Van Gogh's relationships with four striking women: his widowed cousin Kee Vos-Stricker, the prostitute Sien Hoornik, the unstable neighbor Margot Begemann and the flamboyant Parisian café-owner Agostina Segatori. As can perhaps be expected from an artist like Van Gogh, his choice of women was unconventional. He favored more mature companions, and pursued relationships with women that were considered unsuitable.
Van Gogh's love affairs were frowned upon by his family, and further complicated by his lack of money. The artist's yearning for love and a family life was intimately connected with his artistic practice. A woman was important, but there is no doubt that art was the most important thing in his life.
The authors quote extensively from the Van Gogh letters, allowing the reader to discover the artist's feelings about love and relationships at first hand. The book follows Van Gogh’s quest for love up until his tragic end, detailing his life-long, and ultimately unfulfilled, desire for a woman and a family. A sensitive portrayal, shedding light on the man behind the iconic paintings.
Van Gogh in Love is number # 4 of the series Secrets of Van Gogh, written by Van Gogh scholar Liesbeth Heenk in a conversational, accessible manner without the use of art historical jargon.

Van Gogh’s Inner Struggle is a fascinating look into the life of a tortured genius. The letters vividly show the artist's life was no bed of roses. Van Gogh acknowledged that being an artist simply involved struggle, but he believed that one would benefit from adversity, both personally and professionally. "No victory without a battle, no battle without suffering."
Van Gogh Today - Short Stories contains eight short stories of lives that were touched in some way or another by the artist. They are a reflection of the power of his story, and why Van Gogh remains a timeless inspiration to us all.
Van Gogh in Love is the current volume.
Van Gogh and Money focuses on the artist's financial situation, a subject never explored before. Regardless of the actual amount of money he received from his brother, it becomes clear that Van Gogh was poor in the light of his ambition.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2014The paintings of Van Gogh fill a number of coffee table books that decorate various rooms in my home. Truly, for me his paintings are genius. However, not having studied the history of it all, this book was definitely eye opening. I cannot help but feel sad for him, and it seems obvious that the intensity in his paintings comes from the intensity in his emotional approach to life. This book did a fantastic job of explaining that, including his move to more dramatic colors as his situation worsened. Very well done! A must read for all of us with these coffee table treasures but limited understanding to the challenges of Van Gogh's personal life and struggles with love.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2014Another great look into the life of Vincent van Gogh from this author. This author has really done her research and knows how to convey information in an entertaining way. This book is a wonderful look into the many loves that Vincent had throughout his life, including his obsession with his cousin, Kee Vos, his relationships with a prostitute, his mother's caretaker and more. Great read.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2014Nienke Bos, an art historian specialized in Dutch art and art criticism of the late 19th and early 20th century, having been deeply involved in the respected traveling exhibition, `Divisionism: from Van Gogh and Seurat to Mondrian'. She is partnered in this Volume 4 of the Secrets of Van Gogh series with Liesbeth Heenk, a Dutch art historian specializing in Vincent Van Gogh (her PhD thesis from Courtauld Institute of Art in London was on Van Gogh's drawings). Beginning her career in international museums and auction houses she started her own company - Amsterdam Publishers - a primary resource for museum catalogues and art related eBooks. It is with considerable research into the life and art of Vincent Van Gogh that they are presenting 5 books on varying aspects of the artist's oeuvre and life.
VAN GOGH AND LOVE, one would wish, would be a happy series of love affairs or lasting encounters for the gifted artist, but as the authors point out Van Gogh was as unlucky in love as he was in making a living from his passion for painting what are not some of the greatest masterpieces of the art world.
The book focuses on the four primary `loves of his life - Kee Vos (his cousin's widow), the lady of the night Sien Hoornik, his neighbor Margot Begemann (suicidal) and the café owner Agostina Segatori (who displayed his painting in her Paris cafe- models, supporters, but ultimately unable to cope with the man Van Gogh. The information shared is in the form of letters to his brother Theo and many of these passages quoted are poetically tragic. The stories of these four `romances' are relayed with wisdom and solace and with the authors' keen eye for finding the humanity in it all. Grady Harp, September 14
- Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2016This was quite interesting, even having read about his loves before.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2014I truly never thought of Van Gogh in this light... all of my studies obviously centered around his life as a starving artist. I was delighted these two scholars of Van Gogh provided such a different focus: the four "loves" of his life. Tragedy in love - told with wisdom and the vision of the co-authors - in bringing forth the humanity of the great Van Gogh.
Ms. Heenk's work offers a privileged perspective - having lived in the artist's homeland and easy access to supporting history - all providing an edge to write in a scholarly manner. How delightful it is, then that her writing does not hold an academic platform, but is a great read that serves up a vivid portrayal of Van Gogh's life - particularly for those who are a student of the arts or Van Gogh.
The book challenged me to review some of Van Gogh's paintings - seeking to look at them with another dimension... from a different perspective - trying to see the depth of his inner turmoil and appreciating more the art he brought the world in the midst of it all.
Kudos on this collaborative project; very well written - leaving readers both an interesting and enlightening read.
This book was provided as a gift from the author; a gift to be long cherished. I do, however, have no vested interest in the success of the book.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2015Quick read. Nothing new.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2014I recently read Liesbeth Heenk's "Van Gogh and Money" and have been looking forward to reading about his more intimate love life in this book. She and her coauthor Nienke Bos have not disappointed. If you have not read "Van Gogh and Money" yet, be sure not to miss it as well.
Van Gogh with his challenges throughout his life would certainly never have a sedate and normal life surrounding the ladies who came and went in his life, from prostitutes to nearly royalty. And it certainly is true.
Ms. Heenk's unique perspective living in the Van Gogh's homeland and having access to the vast history available through the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam and The Vincent van Gogh Foundation, have given her the perfect platform to write these scholarly works.
As with her earlier work she avoids the scholarly and academic jargon that confuses all but the the most ardent student. It is a great read but I came away with a very full and clear picture of the artists life. If you are a Van Gogh fan like me or a student of the arts, this is a perfect text.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2014This volume provides an extensive look into the head, heart and emotional well being of Van Gogh. Using letters, primarily to his brother and financial support, we learn about Van Gogh's attempts to find love, family and become financially secure. It was a struggle that art won, but at a tremendous cost to his self-confidence, self-esteem and love in his nuclear family. They often disapproved of his choices and his relationships. What is an artists to do? Suffer, may be the best way to characterize all he did to be faithful to his art in his era. I loved the intimacy of the letters. They revealed so much. Thanks for exploring the rabbit hole of love.

This book is far to expensive. Sorry but for what you get it should be priced a lot less and is misleading as I would have expected an actual book not this pamphlet Its actually very thin indeed with large writing and took about 15 mins to read.
