Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam: Highlights of the Collection Paperback – December 10, 2014
A lavishly illustrated museum guide containing the most important highlights of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam which houses the largest collection of Vincent van Gogh's paintings, drawings, letters and prints in the world. Written in an engaging style, the book describes the masterpieces of the collection.
In November 2014 the Van Gogh museum redesigned the presentation of its permanent collection, putting more emphasis on the artist’s tortured life. You will be able to follow Van Gogh's development by seeing all of his great works, and will also get to know his personal ambitions, his emotions, the myths and his major influence on art until today.
If you enter the permanent collection of the Van Gogh museum you will be face to face with half a dozen of painted self-portraits exhibited against a background of larger than life blow-ups of the artist’s multi-coloured self-portrait. In the presentation Van Gogh’s paintings have been given ample space, and the walls vary in color between a greyish green-brown for the early Brabant paintings and drawings, and a green-blue for the Paris pictures. Because of the fragility of works on paper, a changing selection of some ten drawings is being exhibited.
The most important issues are being discussed such as the ear incident, the suicide and the mental illness, death and recognition, the discoloration of his paintings and the origins of the museum. On the top floor of the building is a gallery with works by Van Gogh's followers.
Although the display is basically chronological, the work has been arranged according to certain themes. As a visitor you can follow the on-going search of an extraordinary artist.
In this Van Gogh Museum guide you will be introduced to his masterpieces, and you will discover some of the ideas and ambitions behind his art. For the purpose of clarity, we will stick to a chronological presentation, while discussing works by Van Gogh and by other artists separately.
After briefly discussing the artist's life and work, the book not only focuses on Van Gogh's masterworks such as the Potato Eaters, the Sunflowers, the Irises and his Bedroom in Arles, but also describes many of his less well-known paintings.
Since Vincent and his brother Theo van Gogh collected work by their contemporaries, these are also on display at the Van Gogh Museum. The book contains many pictures by Seurat, Pissarro, Lautrec, Gauguin and Bernard, some predecessors such as Millet and Breton, and artists that followed in his footsteps. This will show you the context, and the impact Van Gogh had on modern art.
If you read this book before you visit the museum, you will be able to fully appreciate and understand the works on display.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2014I saw a new dimension of Van Gogh and his genius when the author tells the story of him purchasing a mirror so that he could use himself as a model; he did this to save money; he had little of it. I was, also, impressed with information about the Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam, and the comments about impressionists: "impressionist mixed colors on the canvas". I had not realized that Van Gogh experimented with a Japanese style. I realized that Van Gogh used many styles to express what he sensed, not only impressionism. I love Van Gogh's country side paintings. After reading the Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam and the explanations about these works, I found myself loving them even more. I was impressed with the information about the museums near the Van Gogh Museum. I am not a world traveler and have had no desire to visit the world since college. Reading the Van Gogh Museum has awakened a small desire to go visit this museum.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2013I found the book on the Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam to be interesting and informative. I especially like the fact that his actual works, especially his signature pieces in the Museum were presented and discussed. Van Gogh had a very short artistic life, but it was rich, varied and complex, as was he. After the succinct, place driven discussion of Van Gogh's life, I especially liked the information on his contemporaries. After all, each person (whether an artist or not) is using others in his or her world to enrich, distract, shape or otherwise forward the career. By presenting them as a unit within an artistic community, Van Gogh is given greater perspective and depth. This book gives a holistic rendering of the essential artwork of this important artist.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2013I bought this as a series of ebooks to prepare me for my upcoming trip to Amsterdam. This one is my favorite, since I feel a special connection to Van Gogh. While this book is definitely a great resource for the museum, I was pleasantly surprised at all the history and context included as well. For instance, this book discusses the Japanese influence on some of Van Gogh's work--something I have not read in other books on this artist. In addition, Van Gogh's contemporaries are also discussed. Even the smallest interesting facts--such as the meaning of almond blossoms as it relates to a painting Van Gogh did--are included. Along with maps and resources, the detailed information on Van Gogh in this book is invaluable. A definite must-have for those planning to visit this museum!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2018This was more like a brochure than an actual book. Small and with very few pages. I had planned to give it as a gift to someone who had gone there and loved it, but I would be embarrassed to give something so cheap looking. For a few dollars more I could have gotten a large, hard cover coffee table book of everything he ever painted. Should have done that.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2013This book contains several paintings from the Dutch artist I had not seen before. There are paintings from Paul Gauguin as well including a curious painting of Van Gogh made by Gauguin. You'll discover lots of insights on the life of these two artists and their different views, styles and influences. A beautiful book and an excellent resource.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2014Great guide on the famous Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam. I will be visiting Amsterdam soon and am now preparing my visit. I very much enjoyed reading this guide on Van Gogh, his life, and his most celebrated paintings. The book also contains a lot of information on paintings by his contemporaries like Seurat, Gauguin, Pissarro and Monet. So when I will be standing in front of the Sunflowers, the Potato Eaters or Vincent’s own bedroom at the Yellow House I will not need any audio–guides and should be able to enjoy the beauty of the paintings even more!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wish I'd bought it before going!
I visited the Van Gogh Museum last week and wish I'd read this beforehand. It and the others in the series are very nicely produced and very good value. They show items one might be sorry to miss (eg the top floor because I was very tired!) There is just a useful amount of information, one is encouraged to study details and it is a nice souvenir of the visit (no photos allowed in the VGM). Works ok on my kindle in greyscale but lovely in full colour on my tablet and on both I can easily enlarge them for closeups.

5.0 out of 5 stars Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam
This is both an enjoyable and entertaining read and will delight any fa of Van Gogh or anyone who intends to visit the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. The book gives a brief live story as well as information on each phase of his life and the paintings that were produced in those phases. It also includes works that either influenced Van Gogh or were influenced by him.
A great guide that you will look over again and again.

3.0 out of 5 stars Still a joy to see the paintings in real life rather than ...
This is a very brief introduction to the museum, and in that is interesting. But I was really hoping for more information to prepare me for my visit, and bought 2 books from the bookshop there. Still a joy to see the paintings in real life rather than images in books- you can feel the energy with which he painted.

4.0 out of 5 stars very useful guide
I chose this book in e format because we were on way to Amsterdam and visiting the Van Gogh Museum. Very interesting and of great use when actually viewing paintings. My wife is an artist and has studied his work and she found it so handy to have it easily ready on her phone to confirm and look up details.
