ROMANCE THAT TRANSCENDS

Brianna Jean is a book-loving, donut-eating, tarot-reading kind of girl. Born and raised in Buffalo, NY, she thinks pizza and chicken wings are a food group and the Buffalo Bills are a way of life (even if they lose).

She has a daughter named Harley and two fur babies named Jack Jack and Kaiden. She writes modern dark romance, set in both fantasy and contemporary worlds, and lives every day with characters wreaking havoc in her brain. Writing is her passion, books are her favorite pastime, and music soothes her soul.

Loud, sassy, and a little embarrassing, Brianna lives to love herself and those around her. Being an author was the dream, and now that dream is coming true—one book at a time.

Judah & Phoenix… the twin flames I didn’t know I needed!

Judah & Phoenix… the twin flames I didn’t know I needed!
Brianna Jean is a new-to-me author and as soon as I heard that the hero in WAYH was based off of Machine Gun Kelly, I didn't waste a second before ordering the paperback. Lord knows I would sell my soul for a piece of MGK, so a book character inspired by him? GIVE ME. Literally take ALL of my money. WAYH was so much more than a love story. If I'm being honest, it wasn't much of a love story. It was a story of two broken humans finding each other in the midst of their hardest battles, using each other like their favorite drug. Judah and Phoenix were so toxic for each other, and I absolutely loved it. WAYH was genuinely one of the most frustrating stories I've ever read, and it was perfect for Judah and Phoenix. Even if I wanted to throat punch both of them 75% percent of the story... Brianna created a true masterpiece for Skyscraper and Little Bird. As soon as I finished, I ordered the paperback of You Said You Wouldn't because I NEED MORE.

Okay, *breathe in breathe out*. This book WOW. First off, if you have any triggers about suicidal ideation, drugs, physical abuse, I don’t think you’ll love this book. Let me begin to say that, Brianna Jean, this book made me feel things and understand the characters in such a real, raw feeling, I honestly never thought possible. The story was so well established and illustrated on the pages it gave me goosebumps reading it. You could quite literally feel and see the story from the different POV she gave us.

Let me begin by saying, this book, the two characters it encompasses, is something many of us have experienced before. A toxic relationship, a needing or wanting to feel worth a damn. The constant struggle to just get out of bed and tackle the day. It was all here. Illustrated beautifully. Though, my favorite, depicted real. It was not a fantasy of what mental health can look like. It IS what it looks like. She took very serious, very prominent mental health struggles and made you relate so much to these characters.

Phoenix is a lost girl who doesn’t have much guidance. She has spiraled and lost control and just wants to find something that will help her leave a legacy. That feeling of wantedness is what she is after. She moves back to LA to live with her best friend, Frankie. Frankie tries to hype her up as much as she can but how do you do that when so much has happened and you don’t know where to begin? Everyone has a best friend in life, but sometimes you struggle and don’t want to even let them know what is going on behind the closed door, for fear of being judged or worse yet, them coddling you. That’s Phoenix. Judah has his own set of issues that are just as relatable. The anxiety you experience when someone leaves. Not knowing if they’ll come back.

These two characters experience a rollercoaster of emotions, experiences, and authenticity that leave them unsure of how to navigate life as they know. This is quite possibly one of, if not my favorite, new series and definitely favorite book. There’s something to be said about a story that doesn’t tread lightly on issues that people experience and handle daily. This makes you sit back and ponder what they are going to do next and also think to your own life and maybe people similar to these characters. Brianna Jean, thank you for this masterpiece, you have written a beautifully broken story of two people experiencing normal feelings and for that I applaud you. You tackled very difficult topics with such precision and carefulness.

This was a great start and I am on pins and needles waiting to see what happens to Judah and his baby bird. While I loved the emotion and writing, I could use less inner monologue and more dialogue between these two.

Every so often you read a book that just hits a little bit too close to home, one that is just so damn relatable that it leaves a mark on your soul. Why Are You Here is one of those books for me. These characters are so real and raw and are just trauma personified.

This book won’t be for everyone, I know that for a fact. It bleeds emotions through the pages, pain, joy, lust, hurt, anger, numbness, grief, love, hate and a hell of a lot of despair. Judah and Phoenix hurt themselves and hurt each other because the way they think makes them question everything and respond irrationally.

Some people may read this book and hate it because it’s not their version of love or they just can’t relate to the characters. That’s fine. But I think most of us have at least a little bit of darkness in us that can relate to Phoenix’s insecurities and tendency to overthink. Or the way Judah’s first reaction is to respond in anger or drown out the self-doubt. If you can relate then I think this book will touch your soul the way it touched mine.

I don’t think I will ever forget this book or these characters and their journey is only at the beginning. Brianna Jean has an amazing talent that was able to bring these characters to life in a way that made me feel their anguish, their love, their desire. It’s hard for me to put everything I think and feel about this book into words for a review. It felt like more than just a book to me. It evokes so many emotions that at the end I sat there and really had to fight down tears because I was physically hurting for these characters. The ending is not a cliffhanger but it’s also not a HEA, it really is only the beginning of their journey and I’m already so in love with these characters and their story. The character development was truly inspiring to read these two stumbling their way through love and life and while I think their story is going to have a hell of a lot more pain and growth before it’s over, I can’t wait to take every step with them.
