The Work and the Glory, Volume 7: No Unhallowed Hand Kindle Edition

4.9 out of 5 stars 129 ratings

Picking up the story shortly after the martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum Smith, No Unhallowed Hand — volume 7 in the series The Work and the Glory — takes the saga of the Restoration the fictional Steed family from the end of June 1844 to February 1846. As this volume opens, it is a time of great sadness and of uncertainty. Having lost their beloved prophet, the Saints witness a series of power plays by those who would use the opportunity to further their own interests. It is not long, however, before the Lord’s purposes are made apparent and the Twelve take their rightful position as leaders of the Church, with Brigham Young at their head.

For a time, an uneasy peace seems to prevail in Illinois, but then the Nauvoo Charter is revoked, anti-Mormon hatred is again inflamed by those involved in the Prophet’s death, mobs burn homes in small Mormon settlements, and eventually the Saints again find themselves faced with the threat of violent expulsion unless they agree to leave the state.

The situation promises to divide the Steeds. Who among them will go west and who will stay? What will Joshua’s and Melissa’s part-member families do? This installment in the series contains not only its share of fascinating real-life history, but also a number of plot twists involving the Steeds that will keep readers engaged from beginning to end. The story of their lives underscores the prophetic nature of Joseph Smith’s words that, indeed, “no unhallowed hand can stop the work.”

I'm not sure if I'm suppose to review the book or the seller. The book is great. Very historically accurate and helpful in understanding the events that led to the exodus of the Latter-Day-Saint pioneers from the "City of Joseph". Also helpful in understanding the apostasy and anti-Mormon feelings that were going on at that time.

The Seller got the book to me in a timely manner. It was in good condition (new). I was expecting Hard Cover instead of paperback, but I didn't read the information about the book that carefully prior to buying it. Anyway I'm still enjoying the book.

I have read this series twice. I have enjoyed the historic content and the information given for this saga of one family's journey in a young America. Their hopes and how they handled disappointments can relate to all of us. The harsh realities of these hard working people is a testament to how this country became what it is. Both the good and the bad.

I have difficulty putting this book down; the story line is gripping. I really enjoy the chapter notes which describe the true historical facts vs the fictional story of the Steed family.
I have learned so much about the true history of the Mormon pioneers, their trials and triumphs. I recommend it to everyone.

    Great book series!
My teenage daughter got into this book series and even though it is fiction she learned a lot about church history, and it inspired her to learn more. It was also great to see her testimony grow through the spiritual experiences in the book.

My wife loves to read all the books by this author and that is why I purchased it. I plan to read it myself soon. So based on my sweethearts discription of the content I give it this rating. She has been very satisified with this book.

Am reading the entire series and this one, as did the others, more than lived up my expectations. The author has taken fictional characters and woven the into actual history, and has done an excellent job. It is hard at times to not feel the fictional characters are just that, fictional.

The book is easy to fallow and has lots of facts. But by having the "made up " family. Living it, it's hard to put the book down
