Leenie Brown's heroes, when growing up, were authors, and the worlds they painted with words were (and still are) her favourite playgrounds! Now, as an adult, she spends much time in the regency world, playing with the characters from her favourite Jane Austen novels and those of her own creation.

When she is not traipsing down a trail in an attempt to keep up with her imagination, Leenie resides in the beautiful province of Nova Scotia with her two sons and her very own Mr. Brown (a wonderful mix of all the best of Darcy, Bingley and Edmund with a healthy dose of the teasing Mr. Tilney and just a dash of the scolding Mr. Knightley).

I was impressed by the different view in this series, especially Lydia. Also Lizzy was not portrayed as perfect, and several new people filled the pages. Really a good story from the first to the last and I highly recommend it

I put off reading this story for several weeks because I thought it wasn't about Darcy and Elizabeth. Well, happily i read it and the various characters in Derbyshire made it captivating. To find out what happened at the time Wickham was refused the opening of the personage was enlightening. But throughout the stories the portion regarding Lydia is the best. We are used to dismissing her a silly, flirt, reckless and ridiculous. But this shows her brilliant brain and her ability to strategically manipulate Wickham and getting to Derbyshire without being compromised. I'm uncertain why they felt she was compromised when she had her maid with her the entire time. Bingley shows his ruthlessness and willingness to do whatever it takes to rid them of Wickham. Its a good story and interesting. To see Mr Bennett admit that he failed his daughters and never paid attention to Lydia was great. With one neglectful parent and the other obsessed with getting her daughters married it takes no thoughts to see how Lydia turned out that way.

This series of books floundered in my TBR pile for much longer than I'd like to admit. And that was because I thought it wasn't anything to do with Elizabeth and Darcy. Well....their relationship does take second place to most of the four book series. They do get their story though. But Willow Hall is a neighbor of Pemberley and in the first book Darcy purchases the property and he does play a big role in the story.

Since purchasing this set, on sale at the time, I have read a lot more of Leenie Brown's works. I've come to love her original characters, so well fleshed out and realized. And her stories, whether P&P variations or original plots and characters, have come to be among my favorite reads. They are all utterly romantic, yet clean reads. When finished with one of her stories I'm always left with the 'Ah, all's right with the world,' feeling. This doesn't mean that the wicked are not wicked enough, or threatening enough. There is always real struggle and hurdles to get over.

One of the things Leenie excels at is redemption of selfish, wicked, prideful, or merely overlooked and neglected characters. Like others have said, this is the best Lydia ever! And omg Bingley!!! Just wait till you read him. Whew, this was the first time I've ever read a Charles Bingley that I found swoon worthy. Goodness. Highly recommended.

I liked the new and improved Lydia and Mr. Bingley. I didn't like Darcy or Elizabeth's characters in this book. New characters were not introduced very well and there were some slow passages to wade through. But I liked Lydia's story.
  • Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2018
I've read many variations but few make the attempt to develop Lydia's character differently. I enjoyed this different handling. The surface behaviors of Lydia, Lizzy, and Mr. Bennet similar to the original at first, but the inner character of Lydia proved much more complex. It also made sense that Lizzy had trouble seeing past her prejudiced judgements of Lydia just as in her early perceptions of Darcy, and Mr. Bennet's initial reactions were skeptical and dismissive.

Once the variations were fully in place, the story was unfolded accordingly and an additional variation appeared with Bingley of which I thoroughly approved.

Tales involving Elizabeth Jane and Lydia's finding love in Derbyshire are of a satisfying length and humor. A real spine is demonstrated by Bingley and Jane, cleverness is displayed by Lydia and even an mature soldier can be surprised by love. Well written and edited with a very comfy voice. I hope you enjoy this collection as much as I have. Recommended.

Along with our favorite Pride and Prejudice characters, there were some gentlemen introduced that added to the intrigue and joy to some of our characters. The time Leenie spent building Lydia's character past being immature and flighty....was the depth she actually owned. It turned out she could be quite enterprising, intelligent and giving. Not the Lydia we are so used to! She is so different and the wonderful man she marries...it was just fantastic. Then with Charles Bingley...wow...What.A.Man!!! She developed Charles into this formidable manly man who could put the fear of God in George Wickham and several others. His character was most striking. He avenged those he loved dearly and took care of Caroline in the way she deserved!!! What a book series!! Enjoyed the entire series very much....not one to miss!

I loved this series. The has give the characters of P&P a very different persona especially with Lydia and Bingley, and I was thrilled with all of it. Lydia proves to still be impulsive and impudent, but not stupid. Bingley become the hero, while Darcy remains the gentleman, but more in the background once his and Elizabeth’s part of the story is told. There are still villains, but they are dealt with nicely, as heroes rise to the occasion. We see multiple Love stories and even some new characters who were all wonderful. It was a joy to read all of the books in this series. Well done!
