Where the Monsters Live: A Dark Revenge Thriller (Love Hurts: Psychological Thrillers) Kindle Edition
"An absolutely brutal novella that had me squirming in my chair." - Hunter Shea, author of We Are Always Watching
How far would you go for revenge?
When a six-year-old girl is abused and left for dead by a pedophile known only as the "Rabbit Man" due to the claw marks left on her body, police follow every lead but reach only dead ends.
Hungry for justice, her grieving father abandons wife and child on a harrowing journey deep undercover into Miami's sex offender colony under the Julia Tuttle Causeway. His purpose is simple: to find the "Rabbit Man" among them, and put him in the ground.
Months later, with no one to trust and the pedophiles he lives among growing suspicious of his actions, he learns nothing is simple where the monsters live.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2024I enjoyed reading this book. It was definitely not what I was expecting and I was drawn in immediately. This book is fast paced and can be read in an hour or less. You'll feel for the father of Nola and your heart will ache for the little girl. Of course this is one of the harder reads to get through if you have a child or even a heart for that matter. If you need a short entertaining read this is the one.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2017Where the monsters live? Apparently under the Tully Causeway in Miami. The over descriptive titles are a nuisance, apt as they may be. But the story was really good. Second experience with Ralston after reading Salvage. This one is without any supernatural elements, just a lean and mean psychological tale of a man on a mission to avenge the rape of his young daughter. The author's writing continues to be strong, he handles a difficult subject with a certain tact and restraint that genre doesn't always show and this one, unlike Salvage, doesn't have any extra fat on it, so it was a very entertaining (albeit not a light) read for something like 40 minutes. Ralston is definitely an author to watch and not just for genre fans, but anyone who likes their fiction dark and disturbing. You're also probably never gonna listen to George Michael's Father Figure the same way again. But then again...it is kinda creepy if you think about it. This story is creepy too, but in the right way. Recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2024This story was dark and hard to read, especially having daughters of my own. I can't say that I don't understand the main character. As a parent, it's hard to accept the idea of your children not being safe in the world we live in now. I sympathize with his actions and can't say I'd be any different if I were in his shoes. I do wish there had been more to the story, more world building and events. Maybe an epilogue of how his life turned out after all was said and done. I do plan to read more by this author.
Heavy triggers involving children and violence, so beware. 18+
- Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2024I downloaded Where Monsters Live and let me tell you, I felt the rage! Duncan did a great job at making me feel like I wanted to be the main character.
But.
My "what the hell" is regarding the additional short story at the end "Baby Teeth". Depression can do strange things to people! Rarely do I ever say what the hell to a story! Good job! Oh, and I had to look up a word. I stopped reading a certain big name author because I feel he just threw words out there for the hell of it, but I was happy to see something I didn't know. Just don't turn into "that guy", Duncan!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2018Where The Monsters Live by Duncan Ralston touches on a deeply disturbing subject, but does not use the violation of children as a plot device. There are no graphic details. This story, instead, focuses on the helplessness and soul-searching of a victim's father and what he is willing to do to restore his peace of mind. In a way, his family suffers more from his quest for revenge than the actual crime.
Even though this is a work of fiction, it's not difficult to imagine a parent going through this exact thought process, dealing with all the frustration and emotional trauma of the pedophile getting away with hurting a child. The ending is an emotional roller coaster, with a couple of shocking twists. I'm glad Ralston chose to take the story in that particular direction.
There is also a short story included afterwards...Baby Teeth is so absolutely disturbing, I don't think any woman with fertility issues should read it. I don't think any pregnant women should read it either. However, if you enjoy horror which causes psychological trauma, be sure to read it.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2018This was a pretty good story about a father wanting justice and revenge for the rape of his daughter. He was not satisfied with law enforcement handling it, so he goes out on his own, leaving his wife and daughter to go deep underground into a colony of sex offenders to find someone named the "Rabbit Man". He becomes friends with the offenders and makes up a story that he has done some bad things too, so that he can get close to them, so they will accept him as one of them.
On his search for the "Rabbit Man", he will have to endure the life of an offender and learn to survive amoung them to find and serve his justice. It is a long grueling task, but he does what needs to be done to become one of them.
Though this was a short story, it comes with a powerful punch and shows you the gritty side of life. It also shows what a parent will do to take that extra step to protect their child and to serve justice on the criminals that invade their lives. Giving this book four stars.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2017Well written story about a father who becomes a vigilante after his daughter is the victim of a pedophile. There are no surprises here, it is straight forward and predictable but entertaining enough. I will warn that there is one graphic scene I could have done without, I think less would have been more in that instance. As the author points out early on, the imaginations of parents are cruel and wild. Parents don't need you to spell out the obvious. There were a few mistakes that could have been caught by a better proofreader, but nothing too bad.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2023The first book was more intense, but this held my attention and wouldn't let go until I finished. One story really pulled me in, and I felt the anger that the man felt. Overall pretty good stories

5.0 out of 5 stars short but not sweet
Boom starts off with a no holds barred straight into the action as we meet our child molester vigilante.
The author doesn’t shy away from the nastiness as we read this short tale of revenge. The writing is close to the bone as high emotions are explored, I guess most of us say “ put me in a room with these perverts” etc but how many of us could extract the vengeance if that was the case.
Great quick read .

5.0 out of 5 stars So disturbing
The short story at the end of the book is even more disturbing. Incredibly well written, with thematic elements present throughout the text.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tough, gritty and packs a punch.
Another great story from Duncan Ralston. As a father, myself, this, at times, gritty tale really struck a chord and had me questioning how far I would go to avenge my daughters, were they to ever meet these very real monsters. Ralston is fast becoming one of my favourite, modern horror writers.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Story
This is another Audiobook from Duncan Ralston’s back catalogue. Narrated very nicely by Perry Daniels, Ralston takes us through the life of a man driven from his home in a quest for revenge.
The events of this book and the way they play out are well written and nicely paced. I’m unsure about how likely this kind of situation really is, but for the purpose of a fictional novella, it was pretty entertaining. I know similar things to this situation do play out so there is something factual for it to be based against. It’s not a long one, so I don’t want to say too much and spoil the story for you, but I would recommend it if you want to check out Ralston’s back catalogue. I haven’t always liked everything he’s put out, and I don’t think it helps that I started with a much newer piece (Ghostland) which is arguably the best work I’ve seen from him. I just wanted to see what had come before, and you can see where he’s grown as an author between some of these older pieces and the much newer titles, one of which he’s actually just released – Ghostland 2.0.
