When the Storm Breaks: A Single Dad Cowboy/Rockstar Romance (Lost Stars) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 2,155 ratings

Our worlds never should have collided, but our paths were always destined to cross.

Brody McCallister was only supposed to be a means to an end.
My golden ticket to get me closer to what I really needed—a way to make peace with what I’d done when I was eighteen, dirt poor, and left to fend for myself.

I only had six weeks in the middle of a hectic world tour to do it.
So the last thing I needed was to fall for a cocky cowboy.
A walking contradiction with a charming grin, a dirty mouth, and a gift for healing wild and broken things.

His life was in Texas. Mine was on the road.
He guarded his privacy fiercely.
I was constantly hounded by paparazzi.

Everyone warned me it could never work, that ultimately I’d be forced to choose—my music career or him.
I didn’t listen. I fell for him anyway.
Hook, line, and proverbial sinker.

But Brody was hiding secrets.
And when the storm finally broke, it destroyed everything in its wake ... including us.

When the Storm Breaks is an angsty, emotionally-charged, single dad, opposites attract romantic standalone, ending in an HEA. Although WTSB is part of the interconnected Lost Stars series, each book follows a different couple and can be read as a complete standalone.

You will love Brody!!!
Wow!!! This book was absolutely amazing!! Emery did it again with a wonderful story that you can't put down!! These characters will consume you and keep you locked into their world. I loved Brody since WTSF and I love him even more now! Brody is all that you want in a male character, from the attitude to the confidence... Shiloh is such a great match for the cowboy that doesn't want to settle down!! I love their connection and the way they could understand eachother. The love that these two share is undeniable and you can see the chemistry as soon as they meet. The struggles that they go through and overcome make that connection that much stronger.. I love it when the cowboy gets his HEA!! The bonus to the book is you get to see all the Mccallisters that you meet in WTSF!! I can't wait for more from this world!!!

4.5 Stars! I've not always been a reader of high angst, intensely emotional books. Since I found Emery Rose, though, I've come to appreciate the roller coaster and how completely I fall into her books.

    Summary:
Shiloh Leroux had one goal in visiting Cypress Springs, Texas. Taking a break during a major world tour isn’t the easiest thing to accomplish, but Shiloh was determined to ease her guilt. The guilt she carried from the time she was a naive eighteen year old with not a penny to her name and no hint of that changing any time soon. Brody McCallister was supposed to be her ticket in to do what she needed to do. That’s all. But destiny sometimes has other plans. The instant she meets the charming cowboy with the lazy grin and dirty mouth, she knows she’s in trouble. How could she resist the man with a gift for healing broken and wild things? Her damaged soul can’t. But Shiloh and Brody are from different worlds. What can they build when his life is in Texas, and hers is on the road living her dream of being a rockstar? They soon learn that the obstacles aren’t insurmountable, and they’re both worth fighting for. Unfortunately for Brody and Shy, a storm is lurking, threatening to reveal secrets. When it hits, will it leave the rubble of a burgeoning relationship in its wake or do Brody and Shy have the strength to rebuild what was meant to be?

Emery Rose never fails to drag me into her stories within the first few sentences, and doesn't let me up until I read the last word. Her books take me on a journey that breaks me down then builds me back up. When the Storm Breaks, just as with book one, had my emotions rocketing up and down throughout the book. Both Brody and Shiloh traveled difficult paths to get where they were, and the obstacles didn’t lesson after they found each other. I had mixed feelings about Shiloh. She was strong, caring, and majorly talented. I loved that even though she was successful, she didn’t forget where she came from. It changed her, but not in bad ways, and she stayed down-to-Earth. Brody was a mystery I couldn’t help but unravel. We saw how damaged he was by his past and what he did to cope in When the Stars Fall. I had an inkling of what might have happened, but it didn’t help to soften the blow when we got the full story. Brody was a survivor. Despite all he went through in his young life, he was protective, possessive, successful, and loved hard in his own way. I also really loved how Brody was with Ridge and the way he stood up to Patrick. As a couple, Brody and Shiloh were an unlikely pair. They belonged to vastly different worlds, but that almost made the romance even more sweet. I loved that their connection was immediate, and maintained a low hum of electricity that exploded into some pretty steamy scenes. Overall, WTSB held my attention from beginning to end. I loved catching up with Jude and Lila and the rest of the McCallisters. I’m really looking forward to getting Jesse’s story, but Gideon is not high on my list. I just don’t see where he’d do anything for family. The storyline was a good one. I really enjoyed learning how these two very different worlds came together. I did have a few issues, though. Shiloh got smart about Dean, but continued to ignore Landry’s role in everything. That irritated and confused me. She had more than enough proof of just the type of person Landry was. And I loved Brody, but I was hoping to see a bit more resolution in the relationships he had with those around him. I was disappointed that he and Jude could never be the same. It truly seemed like Jude had moved past what happened, but Brody still condemned him for his mistakes. I also would have liked to see Brody get some sort of vindication from all the people who looked down on him just because he couldn’t choose his parents. In the grand scheme of things, these issues didn’t stop me from devouring this book. I do feel that Brody and Shiloh’s story was less angsty than Jude and Lila’s, but not by much. I love it when a book can make me feel everything as if I’m right there in the thick of things. I think my laughter, soft smiles, anger, and tears are more than enough proof that I loved it. I can’t wait to find out who is next up for this family, but I know it’ll be another hit. ♡

I have to agree with a previous review about Shiloh. This book is great don’t get me wrong. So please give it a chance. Her writing is beautiful. I absolutely love this author. And did enjoy this book. Go in blind, this purely my own opinion.

But the way it ended…. I just. Maybe I wanted something more for Brody, or maybe this just didn’t hit me the same. It really shows he was always still looking down on himself and she did not help him with that. Like it looked in the beginning. Don’t get me wrong it’s not her responsibility to save him. But he worked hard, and at the first bad turn she turned her back on him, lost all faith, and the way she goes at him just is horrible. and blew up his life. And she barely makes up for this. It takes her so long to go to fix it, and she doesn’t even feel the need to fix it until she find out about her brother, which still didn’t really have anything to do with what she actually said. I just feel with how much he tries to be good, and a good dad, she was very selfish in so many moments. And I feel Noah got lost in the shuffle. I don’t think she makes his life better. I could feel the love, I just. It was, there were so many moments where you actually feel like you don’t want Shiloh to have Brody. I just I don’t know. If you are someone that doesn’t like it when people don’t actually own up to what they have done in the break up, like the redemption is a bit not fulfilling, and the single dad part importance good, crashing and not fully being fixed. I don’t. I liked the start, I just do, I felt Brody deserved more respect. He still was the one trying to fix the redemption and just accepts a barely there apology. She just gets away with it all. And I don’t get that.

Loved this book! I don’t know why I waited so long to read this one, because I will forever be madly in love with When the Stars Fall. So we know that Brody is a single dad, living on a ranch, and he takes in horses who need loving care. Then one day along comes a vacationer who rented out his guest house. Shiloh is actually a rockstar who needs some time away from everything, but when these two meet, they each know they are in for some trouble. Each of them with secrets that they have never talked about, end up becoming special to each other. Can Brody handle the rockstar life that Shiloh leads? Can Shiloh live a quiet country life with Brody and his loving family? Hope you’re ready to read a beautiful story. I listened to the audiobook, and the narrators were amazing! Austin Stone as a cowboy?? Yes please!!

    Gee I loved this.
I mean I have read books like this before…rockstar meets ordinary but this, this was just so pretty.

It was rough around the edges.
    Bent but not broken.
    Sad but not defeated.
    Hopeful and loving.

I feel like it could be written longer and longer. Following these two around for a few more years is something I could do.

Thank you for creating these amazing characters Emery.

When The Storm Breaks is book 2 of the Lost Stars series but can be read as a complete standalone.

It's the epic journey of a love story between Shiloh Leroux and Brody McAllister. We meet Brody in When The Stars Fall and see him as a fun loving youngster and seemingly, easy going guy. But there was also always a bit of something brewing beneath the surface with him. And Emery completely unleashed him in WTSB. He's curt and brisk and somewhat rude. He doesn't have the time, energy or desire for games and drama. He's all man now. Hardened. A little rough around the edges. But he has a good heart and it's in the right place. He's a hot AF single dad to Noah. There were times when he had me swooning. He was complex and had a past that's not the easiest to overcome and it's a small miracle he turned out okay and to be such a hard worker and a good man/father. Also, quite the southern charmer.

This was also one of those books where I'm not sure if I loved the hero or the heroine more. I have a MAJOR girl crush on Shiloh. Would love to be friends with that girl. She was strong, subtle, driven and kind. Brave and took no crap. Held her own but was still a good friend and grounded. Humble and loyal. She's made her fair share of mistakes over the years which just proves she's human. And she has her own rather tragic past to deal with but she was beautiful, even in the moments she allowed herself to be weak in. She was fun and entertaining.

The chemistry between these two was INSANE when it finally broke pun intended). There was a push and pull between them for a while. Man, did they fight it. But together they were combustible, pure fire 🔥 They were funny and good friends with plenty of banter and cute moments. I loved their relationship. A very unique dynamic but still kept realistic. My pony boy and rockstar! 😍

What can you expect from WTSB?

    ✅ Swoony single dad
    ✅ Tension
    ✅ Sloooowwww burn 🔥
    ✅ Country/small town vibes
    ✅ Fabulous cast of characters
    ✅ Heroine you'll adore

You can always expect articulate writing from Rose. You can see the research has been done with how vivid and accurately she writes. You literally feel her bleed herself out onto the pages. I'm so insanely excited for the rest of this series. I just know it's going to be phenomenal. Jesse, Gideon, Ridge. The whole range! And I mean, just look at that cover! 😍💙

There are a plethora of rockstar romances out there and while this didn't absolutely blow my socks off it still felt a bit different from the rest. It was just a relaxed, easy read. Romantic, sexy, tiniest bit of angst, not too many massive dramas in the relationship. Almost a palate cleanser from the angsty stories I usually read.

I don’t know how I feel about this book. I’m really struggling with female characters lately. Because I didn’t love Shiloh as much as I wanted to. I think once we got to the point that she was going to record with Dean, I felt like it was over for me. And over for her and Brody. Like… how she handled things really affected Brody, Noah and Ridge. And I would have liked to see her apologize to all 3.

I’m surprised she never told Dean that Landry forced her to give up the baby. I think I also expected to see more from Dean in this toxic light. And we didn’t really get that.

I definitely enjoyed this book. But there’s definitely some things missing. 😬😕 I’m really surprised that she still chooses music over Brody. I feel like she could have stopped her career and focused on the horse farms with Brody.
