- Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2025This book definitely gives meaning to nothing in life is free. Wasn't able to put this one down and trust me the ending doesn't disappoint!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2023The main character in this book is Gregory Flynn, and he is a connection to another of Butler’s works Identity Crisis. I love how the stories are all connected, even if it’s just a quick nod to another character from another book. It would make for a fun re-read to see if there are any other connections I missed!
I enjoyed the diary format of this book. It was a nice change of pace from others books I’ve read recently. The entries skip a bit, not going exactly in order, and it’s a clever way to show that more has happened in the background, but the pages we see are the important ones. However, the font made it hard to read. I understand the reason behind the choice (the font looks like handwriting) but after a while it just became too much.
Gregory finds a genie, and is allowed the usual three wishes. Only with this genie, the wishes have to be realistic (no flying) and they can’t affect other people (no world peace). I like the boundaries set with the wishes he can get granted, but I do feel like the rules are a bit overexplained. It would be nice to see Gregory more in the dark, so the ending hits a little harder.
At first, the wishes work out will from Gregory. They help him live his best life, and help him make a difference in other people’s lives. He becomes very focused on working as an online therapist and designer, to an unhealthy extreme. After his third wish is granted, things go downhill fast for Gregory.
The last chapter is a great twist that I won’t spoil here. Do yourself a favor and give this book a go, and maybe think about what your wishes would be. Hopefully yours aren’t as bad as Gregory’s!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2023So this book I love how it is a diary sense format I guess you'd say. But also a fun book. I don't want to spoil anything but we'll just say I wish I found a genie.🙂 But if you like short reads I'd highly recommend this. There's a little surprise though in the out play of this. Great book.
