A Gaggle of Ghastly Grandmamas: Wonky Inn Book 9 Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 549 ratings

With age comes wisdom. Apparently.

In need of a little quick cash, Alfhild Daemonne has reluctantly agreed to host a convention for her deceased grandmother’s old sorority society. But only on the explicit condition everyone behaves.

When several dozen elderly witches—both alive and dead—descend on Whittle Inn, chaos isn’t far behind.

In addition to a cackling cohort of bumptious witches with finicky eating habits and their squad of unruly familiars, the sudden appearance of an elevator with a mind of its own means our poor old Alf has a lot on her hands.

Then, when a witch is found dead in The Snug, Alf calls in a detective from the Ministry of Witches, and unfortunately that puts her at loggerheads with her ex, DS George Gilchrist.

Who amongst this gaggle of ghastly grandmamas finished off their rival? Can Alf restore sanity? Will she ever have a moment’s peace?

Don’t be daft. This is Wonky Inn after all.

Chaos, catastrophe, magick and mayhem, ghosts and giggles. This cozy witch mystery is number nine in the Wonky Inn cozy mysteries series and contains all the characters you’ve grown to love.

Genre-hopping introvert and word witch living somewhere between the forest and the sea in East Devon, UK.

Jeannie finds inspiration everywhere: myths, stories and songs, people watching, a word here, a look there, but mainly in the landscape. Devon has it all - rocky coast, pebble and sandy beaches, winding lanes and picture perfect cottages, cliffs and forest.

A good day for Jeannie means a blustery wind, racing waves and salty rain. She lives with her husband and two dogs, make a lot of soup, plays too many computer games and loves watching movies.

The big family connection was not nearly as unexpected as the story seemed to want to make it, but it was fun and "right" none the less. My only distraction in won't in books are some frustrating spelling typos, like as instead of at. But they are easily ignored when the story is good, which it certainly is. And this occasional reference to the sound of owl wings. To the best of my knowledge, most, if not all owls make absolutely no sound with their wings. It is the most intriguing thing, because you expect those huge wings to make a wooshing sound, and the are absolutely, completely and eerily silent. But I am glad the aspect of Alf understanding her owl comes forth a little more frequently, which makes the story all the more enjoyable. I love his witty and catty responses.

There are several fictional worlds/places I want to visit. 1. Is the Wonky Inn, 2. Discworld, 3. Riddler's Cove/Edge, 4. The Magical Renaissance Faire, and 5. Beijing Mer. Reasons: clean, touch of romance, quirky characters, laugh out loud, thought provoking, some have a mystery to them, to name a few.

I love this series. The setting is wonderfully described, I feel cold right now in the spring in Florida because of the depth of the author's description of her winter workout a boiler. The characters are now dear friends of mine.

Another great book in the Wonky Inn! I love the title lol! The ghastly grandma’s keep everyone bustling, that’s for sure. Alf finally learns a bit of what Silvan does. I love this series! Thank you for a great read!

This episode in the Wonky Inn saga, in my opinion, was the best yet. We learn more, the mystery is harder to figure out, more character depth.

Both of these books are wonderful. I’m not into vampires so book 8 creeped me out. Vampires are great bad guys. Book 9 was fast moving with a lot of sassy grandmother witches. It was fun

Yet another brilliant Wonky Inn book. I have pre-ordered book 10, and also a Christmas special. These books are a great read. Long may they continue. It's so easy to be absorbed into the book and its characters. More please!

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read, but factual mistakes are irritating
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 3, 2020
The book was enjoyable, as are all of the wonky inn series, but one thing really wound me up - a capon is a neutered rooster and normally comes in at 6-10lbs - a poussin is a small, single serving chicken, which could be mistaken for a budgie or parakeet. I know this is a minor point, especially in a book about witchcraft, but it really grated in an otherwise piece of escapism, hence only 4 stars
