Written with Regret (The Regret Duet Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 5,002 ratings

Every little girl dreams of the fairytale. The one where the white knight rushes in to save her from the clutches of evil. They fall in love, have babies, and live happily ever after.

By that definition, my life should have been a fairytale too.

When I was eight years old, Caven Hunt saved me from the worst kind of evil to walk the Earth. It didn’t matter that I was a kid. I fell in love with him all the same.

But that was where my fairytale ended.

Years later, a one-night stand during the darkest time imaginable gave us a little girl. It was nothing compared to the pitch black that consumed me when I was forced to leave her with Caven for good.

At the end of every fairytale, the happily-ever-after is the one thing that remains consistent. It wasn’t going to be mine, but there hadn’t been a night that passed where I hadn’t prayed that it would be hers.

I owed Caven my life.
However, I owed that innocent child more.
And that included ripping the heart from my chest and facing her father again.

Originally from Savannah, Georgia, USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez now lives in South Carolina with her four hilarious children.

Never one to take herself too seriously, she enjoys movies that can surprise her with a twist, charcuterie boards, and her mildly neurotic golden retriever. It should be known, however, that she hates pizza and ice cream, almost as much as writing her bio in the third person.

She passes what little free time she has reading anything and everything she can get her hands on, preferably with a glass of wine by her side.

Martinez with that unstoppable curveball for the win! She does it again ladies and gents!
***Note from Reviewer: I never give a lot away about her stories when I write my reviews for her books because you just need to go read them for yourself, that is the only way you will fully understand my reviews when it comes to Aly Martinez. Everyone experiences a story differently than the next person but when I say this author is nothing short of amazing, I mean it!*** OMG!!!!!!!!!! This book! This one slid right up to the top with the Karina Halle as my favorite books of the year... so far! We still have half a year to go. But HOLY CRAP! Martinez does it again! That major curveball thrown at the last second that you didn't see coming! Just the prologue, I started reading it at a time where Amber from Book Obsessed Book Blog had already started the book, I wasn't even past the prologue and I'm messaging her like "I can't believe this!" It started with a bang and ended with one. This is why I love her books so much. Why I think so highly of this author. You never see it coming. At this point I know to expect something but it is never the same. She has a way in every book she writes where just when you think you know what is going to happen, the complete opposite happens. She is an unpredictable author and I love it. Her characters are always well written. They are like an onion, you pull back layer after layer but you never know what you will come across with each layer revealed. Her stories are always complex and full of surprises. I have been reviewing her books for a few years now and after all this time, her books still shell shock me. Her stories throw you through hoops, you never know what is going to happen, and each book has it's own twist and turns and none of them are ever the same. This is just book one of a duet. Martinez is amazing with the duets... so there is so much more to be revealed! I cannot wait! I dare anyone to try to understand this author because I have been trying for years now. She is just amazing and I would love just one day to live inside her head because you know she has some secrets up there. Her writing, her stories, they are masterpieces. How one can pull all this together and completely shock her readers the way she does with EVERY SINGLE STORY she writes, she is just that dang good. Do I even need to say it... 5++++ Owls!

"There’s a reason time only marches in one direction. You can choose any second to start over again.”

WRITTEN WITH REGRET underscores why I love Aly Martinez so much. She is my go-to author when I'm in a slump - her books pull me out of it, only to push me into a book hangover and this story one is par for the course for this author.

Caven Hunt is a single daddy who made me smile with the way his daughter was able to wrap him around her finger. Although he is filthy rich he doesn't spoil his daughter rotten but makes her earn whatever she wants to have. But he wasn't always like that - in the beginning we see how much having a daughter. who was dropped at his door, scares him. He never wanted kids, he never wanted to spread his own DNA for one specific reason. Yet it happened when he had a one-night-stand with a woman who then stole from him. So to watch him fall in love with this little girl, her becoming his whole world was so incredibly beautiful. His biggest fear, what makes him rage in anger, is that the woman who gave birth to Rosie, comes back to claim her. Because there is no excuse. Or is there?

And of course she comes back. And of course Aly makes us understand, why Hadley couldn't be there for her daughter. I thought that part was quite predictable but that didn't diminish my enjoyment in the least. Hadley's reasons are very, very relatable and I hope everyone feels that way because it is pretty much one of only a few reasons why I would excuse and forgive abandonment of a child.

Hadley is another reason why I love Ms Martinez's stories. I really love her characters but her female leads are always strong, with a healthy dose of sass. Hadley, who has learned to live in the moment after so much darkness in her life, wants to reconnect with the daughter she had to give up. My heart really felt for her when Caven wouldn't give her the time of day and hear her out. It was really hard to watch - she had essentially nobody and it wasn't even her fault. There were times when I got really angry at Caven because of his pigheadedness and how he lashed out at Hadley. I had to remember that he was scared that she would take his girl away.

Hadley obviously has secrets and while some of them I could guess this last one rocked my world. What a whopper of a surprise. Their pull towards one another was so palpable - Caven fought so hard but ultimately, he couldn't resist Hadley, who got under his skin fast with her gentle personality and smart mouth. I despised the treatment Hadley received from almost everyone close to Caven - they were judgmental jerks who knew nothing about this beautiful, brave woman.

Hadley's sass and Caven's dry humor, I suspect, are part of the author's own personality and make a huge difference. It keeps this from becoming an angst fest. Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of anxiety but she balances this perfectly. WRITTEN WITH REGRET is the first in the Regret duet that left me gasping in shock, hurting for the main characters and swoon a little and laugh a lot despite the serious mood of the story. Aly Martinez knows how to captivate you with her spellbinding writing She rivets us with an impossible but beautiful romance and puts us through an emotional wringer. I couldn't put this story down. So, can I have the next one please?

I just ... I mean ... sigh ... THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE FUN!!! Fun I say!

    *************

Aly Martinez is one of my favorite authors, especially when she writes duets. She keeps me on my toes … every single time! I don’t even understand how it happens because I’m always ready and paying attention and reading really carefully but she always BAM! s me at the end. EVERY.SINGLE.TIME. She’s a wizard. That’s really the only explanation I have. *sigh*

Okay, so obviously I can’t tell you much about this story-line or events, but I can tell you a few things about what’s gonna happen to your brain during this journey so far (or at least what happened to me lol). The prologue of this story gave me a mini stroke. Like the bottom fell out of my soul and I was devoid of any coherent adult thoughts for like over a minute. Then the present day story began and it felt like an about turn. I didn’t feel the anxiety I normally felt when reading Aly’s stories. Honestly, it felt lighthearted. It was fun actually. I mean yes, there is drama, but it’s not anxiety driven. It was more factual….things happened in both Caven and Harley’s lives in the past that brought them to this point and they’re not not dramatic, but as I read the story, I just felt good. I was happy actually. So I let my guard down.

THAT WAS A SERIOUS MISTAKE … so obviously, the bubble I was in while reading this story popped. Literally. I heard it pop in my head when I read …. THE LAST SENTENCE! Jesus save me from this woman’s wizardly powers *blink*

Every single time I read an Aly Martinez romance, the writing, the story line, and the characters captivate me in a way that doesn’t happen with many other writers. Martinez has the uncanny ability to craft a story that inundates me with overwhelming emotions - ones that consume my mental state and leave me emotionally drained because that’s how absorbed I become with the hero and heroine and the trials that seem to continue knocking them on their backsides, even when it seems as if they can’t take anymore.

Heading into Written with Regret, I was prepared for the cliffhanger; I’ve actually gotten pretty used to them by now. I was also prepared for the twists and turns the story line would take, knowing that every piece of the puzzle would be revealed when and if Martinez and her characters wanted them to be. So as I dove further into Hadley and Caven’s story, connecting the flashbacks and present-day scenes while also understanding exactly what kind of turmoil these two would face, not only because of the baggage of their respective pasts but the secrets that they still tightly held on, refusing to say things out loud for fear that everything between them and the most important person in both of their lives will change.

Caven learned to be a single parent by trial-by-error; it wasn’t a role he wanted to play nor did he feel it was one he would be good at, but fate didn’t care about what he wanted because it placed a precious baby girl in his care, which meant that he needed to learn quickly what it meant to have a child he is solely responsible for, and he definitely found his way in the four years that he’s had his Rosalee. And, despite the way she came into his life, he is her fiercest protector and he’ll do whatever it takes to ensure her happiness, even if it means allowing someone in her life that he shouldn’t.

The heroine in this duet is extremely flawed and her decisions will absolutely be judged by readers, and while it’s understandable given what she did, I still think that everyone needs to look at the big picture of why she did what she did and the variables that came into play - some out of her control, especially the ones that attempted to swallow her whole. Hadley coming back into Caven and Rosalee’s lives is a major upheaval for all of them, and I feel like we haven’t been privy to even half of what not only stands in the characters’ way for closure but also what repercussions they still have to face once the complete truth is revealed.

The word ‘regret’ is such a powerful six letter word; it’s a driving force in many people’s lives, and sometimes, it hangs like an albatross around their necks, refusing to let go and forcing them to suffer, even while they attempt to make amends. But I do have to say that with the title of book two, Written with You, I have hope that Caven and Hadley will find a way through the battles they’re waging with themselves, with each other, and with those closest to them. The one good thing is that these two are fighters and they won’t back down for what they think is right, even if it’s only best for the two of them and the little girl who owns their hearts.

    Oh...My...Freaking...God!!!

Brilliant doesn't even come close to how I feel about this book. Nope brilliant seems completely lacking after the emotional rollercoaster I've just ridden.

This author is a goddess at playing with words. One minute you could be chuckling and the next minute your throat is burning as you try to hold back sobs. B...ril...liant deliverance and masterful storytelling.

AlyMartinez is an insightful writer. It's the little things that she writes while delivering her stories that pack a whole wallop of feels. It's these little things that a massive ton of writers don't write yet they carry so much weight in building a relationship between reader and characters to make a perfect read. Aly Martinez has them in spades. She brings humour and sorrow and she owns it, Written with Regret is full of both and as Caven and Hadley's relationship builds so does the drama. But oddly the drama is an undercurrent, you know something is going to burst the bubble but are so happy reading their growth you kinda don't want anything to mess with it. And my god is Rosie Posie ADORABLE!

I cannot wait to read book 2, June 13th cannot come fast enough, seriously. This duet I will most definitely have to buy in paperback and will revisit many times of this I am certain.

I highly recommend this to romance readers who love emotional angst and stories with a twist.

I hope to god no one spoils this story for others in their reviews because everybody needs to read it like they were the first person to do so to get all the feels.

A six star epic read. Yep, you can totally see how much I loved it! I received an arc which I devoured, and because I loved it so much I instantly pre-ordered it too. It's honestly just too good.
