A plane crashes in South America, leaving only two survivors. Reclusive author Jonas Drake stumbles from the fiery wreckage of the crashed 747 and meets Jeremy, a young boy struggling to come to grips with the loss of his mother. Hunted by F.A.R.C. insurgents chasing them for ransom, the pair flee into the rainforest with no plan and almost no hope. Desperate to distract Jeremy from the nightmares surrounding them, Jonas tells him stories from his early days of writing, drawing him away from one reality and into another. As they travel and the tales intensify, Jonas’s long-forgotten characters, old friends he has neglected for years, materialize in the jungle, aiding the unlikely duo in their quest for survival. But will their help be enough?
Filled with wonder, this stunning adventure from USA Today bestselling author, Luke Romyn, journeys into the heart of a man turned cold by a world he barely recognizes.

Who is Jonas Drake?
When his plane crashes in the Amazon with only one other survivor, reclusive bestselling author Jonas Drake is the unlikeliest person you expect to handle the situation well. And he doesn't. He relates with the young boy who has just lost his mother even worse. In fact, the only way he can communicate with Jeremy is to tell him fantasy stories, tales with links to Jonas's heart.
And then the characters come to life in the jungle around them...

Jonas Drake is a successful but reclusive novelist with a troubled past. He attempted to confront his childhood demons with his early fantasy short stories. Those stories didn't sell well so he changed genres and wrote crime stories for the money and fame they brought. However that didn't bring the inner peace his tortured mind craved and needed.
On a return flight from Brazil, the plane crashed in the Amazon rainforest. Jonas and a ten year old boy, Jeremy, are the lone survivors. Jonas soon learned he was a product of the streets of New York City and was ill equipped to face the dangers of F.A.R.C. terrorist, wild animals, jungles natives and drug smugglers. Or was he?
To placate and support Jeremy, Jonas recounted tales about characters from his early fantasy books and soon drew the boy into the world he created to escape a troubled childhood.
I'm not a fantasy fan so some of those recounted stories were a bit long for my taste. But they were necessary to set the stage for what was to come.
In the end, Jonas found the strength to confront and accept his past and make life altering decisions that would reshape who he had become and who he chose to be.
Overall, this is one of the best stories I've had the pleasure of reading in a long time. I highly recommend it.
The editing, sentence structure and writing style of Walking With Shadows are exemplary.
In depth research is evident by its accuracy.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2016This was a truly exciting book, but what would you expect about a guy whose flight crashes in the jungle? The phrase "out of the frying pan, into the fire" went through my head several times. No spoilers, but I'll tell you this: it pays to read. It might even save your life some day. The fantasy tales our hero has conjured are as full of life and energy as the Amazon jungle. Beware the plot twist - I wish I could say I saw it coming but I got swept up in the whole thing and then BAM! I actually winced (and they say I have no feelings!) and apparently made some sound because my cat woke up from her doze and looked at me sharply. And damn it, I should have seen it coming. This was the first book from Luke Romyn that didn't have me feeling like I was on a thrill ride from the get-go...and that SHOULD have been a warning sign! In retrospect, there were signs all along. Lesson learned; we'll see if he can fool me again! The only reason this doesn't get full stars is a small continuity puzzle that wasn't resolved, and that loose end bugs me - although it also leaves room for a sequel at some point. But it's nothing that should scare you off - this is almost a gentle ride that still manages to throw you off balance at every turn.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2024This is a new author for me and one whose writing has surprised me. This book is well written and grabs you from the beginning. This story combines a person's will to survive, unexpected help, and the question of what is real or not. Jonas is an author who has closed himself off from the world. When his plane crashes in the Amazon, we follow his trip to survive. His journey is full of dangers and stories from his childhood' that he tells Jeremy, a child who also survives the crash. The ending is both unexpected and fitting. So sit back and enjoy Jonas' journey to survive and after

- Reviewed in the United States on June 1, 2024This story is about survival after a plane crash. The main character is lost in the rain forest with a 10 yr old boy. His heroes from his childhood play an important role during his survival. Its definitely a different story from any other, but worth reading. Maybe it will bring back childhood memories for you.
