A Warrior's Nightmare (Immortal Warriors Book 3) Kindle Edition
Jessica is excited about starting college in the fall, already enrolled at the University of Oregon. Every year for as long as she can remember, she has enjoyed spending a week camping with her father before school started, but this year is special because her best friends are coming with them. She has no way to know they will all be walking into a nightmare straight out of a horror movie.
Eighteen years before, Jessica’s mother died under mysterious circumstances right after giving birth to her. Her dad refuses to speak about it, though his eyes grow haunted every time the subject comes up. All Jessica knows is that it was a violent death. Her answers will come from a stranger, one who knows far more than he should.
Nethaniel is a Lycaeonian from the planet Laizahlia, a wolf shapeshifter. He is taking his first trip off world with his father when he runs across Jessica fly fishing at the lake. Though it shouldn’t be possible, he recognizes her immediately as his fated mate. Unfortunately, Nethaniel’s father has enemies, and three have followed them to Earth, vengeance on their minds. Jessica and her friends are considered little more than collateral damage.

Having read this book, I believe it clearly captures the paranormal genre to a high standard. Paranormal can often become a bit repetitive when reading, but I can honestly say, I was never bored whilst reading. The author's writing is exceptional which allowed me to stay in tune with the novel from beginning to end. Katie Noakes--Goodreads Review

- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2018From the distant world of Laizahlia, a battle for power is literally transported to Earth. Laizahlia is world of what we call werewolves and vampires. In an attempt to gain control of one of the packs on Laizahlia, Naijan, a wolf tossed out of his pack, tries to lure the king Jendigh and his son Nethaniel to Earth to kill them and gain control of the pack. With the help of a Hunter named Xavier, Jendigh and Nethaniel are going to track and bring Naijan and his followers back to Laizahlia to deal with. What no one expected Nethaniel to find his mate in the form of a human girl on Earth. Jessica. Jessie has no idea she is werewolf or how to shapeshift. Nethaniel must teach his destined mate about herself, her heritage, and keep her alive from Naijan as they are hunted. Will Jessie accept her fate, or will she reject Nethaniel and the world he offers her?
A Warrior’s Nightmare is the third book by Denna Holm in her Immortal Warriors series. This however is a standalone novel that can be read and understood without having read the first two novels. Given the quality of writing and engaging characters and plot, I will be going back to read the first two books in the series.
This novel takes place on Earth, in Crane Prairie Reservoir Oregon. A wooded campground filled with wildlife and away from the distractions of modern technology. Jessie and her friends are there for a week of camping, hiking, boating and hanging out, her dad is a forest ranger in the area, but seems to know more than he lets on when the kids encounter two massive wolves while out playing paintball. The ability of Holm to put you into the action is great, you feel the fear of the kids as they are staring down two massive wolves, you feel Jessie’s excitement at seeing Nethaniel for the first time. If you weren’t drawn in before you are in this moment.
One of my favorite parts of this book is the interaction between Jessie and Nethaniel as he teaches her how to set her wolf free. His compassion for her mixed with his sense of urgency is a compelling mix. The fear he has for Xavier if felt by the reader, the sheer power the vampire holds is terrifying as you watch him interact with the characters. Nethaniel’s young age and inexperience shows and gives the reader a better connection showing he is not perfect. All the characters draw you in, out of fear, concern, compassion, or just the hope that they get what they deserve in the end.
Overall this novel is engaging for readers from young adult to adult, there are some semi detailed sexual scenes, so I would recommend it for older teens. It is a nice twist to the typical werewolf / vampire worlds that flood the market for paranormal novels. I always look for great character development, not just in one or two main characters, but also in minor characters as well. Holm does a great job at giving even the minor characters personality and a purpose. There is not a lot of filler, everything is important to plot or character development. I look forward to reading more from Denna Holm and engrossing myself in the world she has created.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2018A Warrior’s Nightmare is a Sci-Fi novel that focuses on the character of Jessica, a graduating senior that is trying to enjoy the summer break before she heads off to college. During this particular break, Jessica is spending time with her friends camping when something unexpected and devastating happens that takes Jessica back to her past – to when she was born. The reader learns early in the novel that Jessica’s mother when Jessica was only a newborn, and the circumstances surrounding her mother’s death have never been revealed to Jessica. It seems that things aren’t always what they seem as Jessica begins to learn the truth about her mother’s death. Meanwhile, Jessica is noticed by Nethaniel, a wolf shapeshifter from a different planet. Nathaniel is convinced that Jessica is his one and only soulmate and sets about trying to prove this; however, it seems that his presence presents a complication and danger to Jessica and her friends. Through twists and turns within the novel, the reader begins to understand that everything is not always as it seems and evil comes in many forms.
Although, I’m typically not a fan of science fiction that involves wolves, I did enjoy Denna Holm’s storyline. I have never read anything about wolf shapeshifters before, so I immediately though that that was interesting. Also, I like how the author didn’t just make this a novel about a boy falling in love with and trying to win over a girl. Those really get boring to read after a while. Instead, Holm’s adds in a few more plot developments, such Jessica beginning to learn the truth of her mother’s death. Ultimately, the struggle that ensues when enemies of Nethaniel’s father begin to cause trouble is what made me want to keep reading. There were a lot of smaller details and plot lines that the author wove together in order to make the novel a more exhilarating read.
One note of circumstance though does exist within the plotline of Nethaniel finding out that Jessica is his soul mate. This happens very early in the novel – chapter one, I believe. We hardly know anything about Jessica, and we know even less about Nethaniel up to this point. What is going on with him to have him be in the position mentally to recognize Jessica as his soul mate. That part of the book just seemed a bit forced, and I would have liked to have seen that early ignition of love and yearning have happened more organically, if that makes sense. At the very least, I would have liked to have known both characters a bit more before this sighting occurred.
Overall, I would give A Warrior’s Nightmare a rating of four out of five stars. Holm does an adequate job of putting a new spin on the typical ware wolf story.

3.0 out of 5 stars Denna Holm does a fantastic job writing epic
A Warrior’s Nightmare is Book 3 in the Immortal Warriors series brought to you by author, Denna Holm. Denna Holm does a fantastic job writing epic, science-fiction and fantasy plotlines that automatically draw in the reader. The author does a marvellous job at blending mystery and death with a world full of shapeshifters and the paranormal. A book that provides everything you would expect from a sci-fi and fantasy novel – mystery, tension, excitement, darkness, and the supernatural.
The narrative of A Warrior’s Nightmare is simple, yet highly effective. Jessica, a young girl whose mother mysteriously died, starts out every school year with a camping trip. However, her camping trip soon turns into a nightmare whereby she finds answers to her mum’s death in an unexpected way. Jessica begins a friendship with an out-of-this-world shapeshifter names Nathaniel. Nathaniel appears to have some knowledge and answers that Jessica seeks. However, their friendship is postponed because of enemies that are out to get them. Can Jessica get the all-important answers that she has been searching for her whole life? Can Nathaniel be that person to bring her one step closer to the truth?
The plotline throughout this book is strong, creative and imaginative. Denna Holm structures her book clearly and is easy to follow. I think that paranormal activities are apparent throughout the book, which makes for a great read. Readers are really able to escape from their ordinary, everyday lives, and enter a world of pure make belief and imagination. I think Denna Holm really demonstrates a strong understanding with regards to the paranormal world. A clear interest in science fiction is established when reading this book. An author that possesses good knowledge in the chosen genre that they are writing, is definitely going to make for good reading.
Having read this book, I believe it clearly captures the paranormal genre to a high standard. Paranormal can often become a bit repetitive when reading, but I can honestly say, I was never bored whilst reading. The author’s writing is exceptional which allowed me to stay in tune with the novel from beginning to end.
Whilst paranormal activity and science fiction are not my most popular choice with regards to the type of book I enjoy reading, I can appreciate good writing with a solid plotline. A Warrior’s Nightmare does an amicable job at really creating mystical characters. Both the characters and the plotline are strong, and Holm should be proud of the Immortal Warriors series. After reading this book, I would rate it 3 out of 5 stars. The only real reason that I have deducted two stars is because of personal preference. Overall, I think the story, twists, and characters are great, and I really enjoyed reading this book.
An honourable attempt at creating a novel for the paranormal genre. An enjoyable read which really dives into the supernatural world, making the reader feel a sense of isolation and fear.
