About the author

Gregg Dunnett writes twist-packed psychological thrillers set where the land meets the sea – a habit born of years chasing waves as a windsurfing journalist and all-round beach-bum. His novels include the Amazon #1 bestsellers “The Wave at Hanging Rock” and “The Things You Find in Rockpools” (now in development for TV) and the Audible #1 hit “Little Ghosts”.
After twenty years on England’s south coast, Gregg, his partner María (who translates the books into Spanish), their two kids and a daft Labradoodle named Loki set off on another adventure – moving to Spain to draw artistic inspiration from the moody Cantabrian mountains and the wild Atlantic coast. Plus the food’s really good.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2017I read a lot--I've finished 35 books this year alone--and this is one of the best books I've read in a long time. I was so excited when I finished I had to come and write a review.
If you like thrillers, mysteries, or coming of age stories, this book has something for you. It's told from the point of view of two different narrators, which I normally hate, but it's done so well here that it didn't bother me at all. There's a lot about surfing, which I'm also pretty uninterested in, but I loved reading about that, too. This book is so well written and tightly plotted that it's pure pleasure to read. It's what I refer to as a "yarn"--a story that spans years and covers a lot of ground. Honestly, I was hooked from the first page because it's written so well. I saw a review commenting on the grammar, which is a mystery to me. I'm a bit of a stickler about that and I didn't notice anything. There may have been a few minor mistakes, but nothing habitual.
Regarding the ending, which has been complained about in some reviews to the point that the author wrote an explanation on his website--I thought it was pretty clear what had happened. I was a bit confused about what had happened to another character who is referenced in the end, but I can't go into too much detail without giving the whole plot away. After reading the author's explanation, I think my interpretation was a little more twisted, but still in the same ballpark.
Anyway, don't let reviews stop you from giving this one a try. I'm pretty picky about my thrillers because it's my favorite genre, and I loved this one. I do love a good twist (or two, or three)! I also did not guess the ending, which normally happens, so that's amazing too.
Five stars all the way around!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2022This is not a casual read, and I will admit, that I put off reading it for a long time, and only opened it when I had choices that interested me even less. But I'm glad I did. From my perspective - at first I found it really confusing because it seemed as if I was reading two stories from two different books, but eventually, the threads come together and everything becomes more intense and suspenseful, and the book gets harder to put down. I cannot figure out a way to describe why this book was delightful - sorry, but I find fictional murder 'delightful' - without giving away the plot, so I'll just say, start it, and stick with it.
I have a few criticisms. 1. I didn't feel that some of the important adult characters were developed enough to make them seem real to me, 2., for me, the surfing descriptions were too long, probably because I don't surf, and 3., I would have liked a different ending - I can't explain why because that would give away the whole story- others may not feel the same.
Once I'd finished the book, I learned that I'd already read a book by this author - The Things You Find in Rockpools. I meant to write a review of that book, because it was brilliant and honestly one of my favourites at the time - another one that I started with no expectation to enjoy it very much, but ended up loving it. So, if you choose not to read The Wave at Hanging Rock based on other reviews, I recommend 'The Things You Find in Rockpools' with no hesitation at all. I loved that book. This one, I liked a lot, and I say, even though it's a little rough around the edges, I think it's worth reading. Give it a try.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 4, 2017This is a difficult book to comment on because the author has talent. The writing flows easily and although the pacing slows at times, it never gets completely bogged down. It is difficult to discuss what didn't work without creating spoilers, so I will share as much as I can.
There are characters in the book who are not killers yet they make plans to kill another person. While all of us have, at one time or another, been angry enough to express (or at least) the thought that we could kill someone, these are fantasies that we use to "blow off steam." There are books written on the psychology of killing, dealing with how the everyday person faces and usually evades killing another person, even in war. Humans are just not wired to kill another human, even in war. I am not saying that it is not possible, but I am saying that I found it difficult to believe that the people in the book would be able to carry out any plans they might make to kill someone. Unfortunately, this is a major part of the story.
There are two twists in the story, which the author handles perfectly. If Mr. Dunnett would not have carefully written his book in the manner he used, one of the twists would not have worked at all. The twist in the last chapter was totally unexpected...so unexpected, in fact, that I had to reread that section three times to ensure I had not misread it. Serious thought went into the twists, and the author made it look easy.
To recap, the writing is good, and the surprises are professionally crafted. While the characterizations of the boys are good and Natalie is around enough to make me feel like I know her, Dave and other characters are not as fleshed out as the others. The idea that any normal person could plan to kill another person was difficult to pull off, and as an intricate part of the plot, it weakens the story. If you can suspend disbelief through this aspect, it is an entertaining read. Three-and-a-half stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Looking for a good read? Don't surf past this one!
I think it surprised me to realise that this is a debut novel. The mastery of the writing that magnetises you to this book throughout defies that.
So, what can I say that will give the reader an idea about this novel? Firstly, it's obviously written by someone who likes seaside water sports. Surfing features largely in the story. But fear not, you don't have to have blonde locks and a perma-tan to enjoy it. In fact, all you need to enjoy this book is the time to read it and the time problem sorts itself out in that once you become hooked (which happens pretty early on) you just find the time.
In outline, this is the story of three youths whose common love of surfing brings them together. They have some adventures together, but on one occasion, things take a dark and fatal turn, the repercussions of which influence the three friends' adult years. The characters are well drawn. The writing and story is compelling and believable and, as in all good thrillers, there's some unexpected turns of events, the nature of which I won't reveal.
The book is categorised as a psychological thriller, but don't let that put you off. The emphasis is definitely on the thriller side of things. From the beginnings of boys having adventures at the seaside, Gregg Dunnett slowly turns up the ante through the book to it's more deadly finale.
In summary, this book is both compelling and memorable. I'm sure that you will enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read for surfers
This surfer novel starts out with two seemingly unrelated stories and takes its time to develop its pace. Surfers will particularly enjoy the many surfing scenes and the descriptions of different waves. I instead enjoyed Jesse's "voice". Some readers found the ending too strange or too unclear. I loved just this twist and had no doubts about the intention.
Psychopaths are misleading and deceptive - just as the killer and his author.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read !!
I loved this book, it was pacey, kept me reading and wanting to read on and on (finished it in 2 arvo s in the holidays )
The main character was Australian and I assumed the author was too , but read in his bio he was not. He got the Aussie lingo pretty true to life . Loved the twist at the end , didn't pick it !

The first book I've read through without stopping for years. It doesn't disappoint right up until the end sentence. I'm now looking forward to Gregg Dunnett' s next book with eager anticipation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible Read
An incredible novel that I couldn't put it down. I had to see what was on the next page. From the start you are drawn in, can picture the characters . It goes back and forth making you wonder where its all heading to. It gets better with each word. I would highly recommend book to anyone who wants a book that will make there jaw drop. Sit, get comfortable and enjoy
