Wave of Deception (A Murder on Maui Mystery Book 9) Kindle Edition
A beach execution. A devastating hurricane. Can Maui's best PI solve the case without his family members becoming the prime suspects?
Edgar Allan “Poe” Rutherford is used to weathering difficult cases. And since one of the victims is his sister-in-law’s abusive ex, Poe hopes nobody looks too hard at his own compelling motive…
Ignoring the sound advice to keep his nose out, Poe spars with the island’s newest police detective who seems to have her own hidden motivations, especially when she asks Poe to help with another case.
Poe has never taken on two murder investigations at once. But as he gets closer to the truth, will he like the answers he finds?

- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2020I had forgotten how much I missed Poe, Alana, Maui, Foxx, and the rest of the group since I finished the last book. But, after a few pages, I was right back on the island with everyone. There was a lot going on in this book, and some new characters are introduced. A hurricane hits Maui, causing lots of damage to lives and property. Poe gets caught up in 2 murder mysteries, one of which is very personal.
As many raters have stated, Poe narrates the story, giving us insight into his thought processes as the story unfolds. He occasionally chooses to withhold some details, but usually tells us he is going to share at a later time.
This is a great addition to this Murder on Maui series. It can be read and enjoyed even without having read the others. However, as some have stated in their reviews, you won't know the background of how the characters have evolved over time. I recommend starting with book 1 and reading all of them in order. You will be much more invested in the characters if you do!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 5, 2024What a great ride! I loved how the stories were woven together and how the Ohana stayed strong thru thick and thin. Excellent read!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2019This was a good read. I only wish I had known that there were books before this one. Although this book did a good job of giving you enough details from the other books so that you don't really feel like you were missing anything important. Usually I like to read things in order. I have since gone back and gotten and read the first 3 books and I purchased 2 others from this author. I like the style in which he writes. Fun and with a good amount of humor in between murders. Nice touch.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2019First let me say thank you for not using offensive language. I'm an older women who believes that cussing is just not appropriate and will often quit reading a book that has offensive language in it. I love the characters and especially maui the dog. Keep writing the books and I will keep reading them!!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2019Everything about this book is great. All the characters are interesting including his friends and in-laws as well as the bad guys. And the thoughts and phrases that Poe thinks and says are laugh out loud! Gotta order another Poe book right away.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2022Don't know what it is about these books, but I just love them all! This was an especially good one. I wish there were 100 of them, I would buy them all and read them over and over.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2019Great characters and plot. A little jumpy in some spots. Love the story and will read more from this author. Poe needs to stop with so many apologies !
- Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2025These stories always keep me enthralled to the last page. Poe says the simplest solution is usually the right answer; however, he keeps you guessing right up to the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Experience the magic of the Islands with this page turning thriller
Yet another murder (or two) on this beautiful Hawaiian island. The story is told in the first person by Poe, who became an investigator in Maui by accident when he came to stay with a friend who had moved to the Islands and stayed on. Wealthy enough not to have to work, he drives around in a BMW convertible and has got himself once again involved in solving a crime. I love the author's unique style and humour and the intricacies of his plots. I have read most of the Maui novels and can't wait for the next one. These novels are sheer enjoyment and always with a surprising denouement!
