Captain Jack Hale and his crew of ragtag scavengers live by a code. They do the job, get paid, and keep their heads down.

When Captain Hale refuses to turn over the survivor to those behind the slaughter, he and his crew become outlaws. Fugitives in a system controlled by an alien AI.

The odds are against him, but Captain Hale has an ace up his sleeve, or rather, in his blood. The secret might just give him an edge to beat Sol Corps at their own game, though exposing it will draw out an old and even more dangerous enemy.

The sins of his past may just be what saves the future for all mankind.

I read a TON of SciFi, like a dozen or more books a year in addition to all the stuff bookworms read. This is book is great for a number of reasons. Character development, keeping the tech in the background to the story and not making tech THE story, credible dialogue, good pacing and good introduction and reminders throughout the story of the overall story arc. Because we know early on of the daily struggle that Our Heroes face, we stay engaged as the obstacles get bigger and bigger. I have not stayed up late READING (with coffee) in YEARS! Now I'm sleepy. Thank you author. Thank you. Ha ha. I will now spend $$ I don't have to buy Book 2.

Great story. It kept me thinking all the way through trying to work out who was responsible for what. There’s even a final twist I didn’t see coming. Characters are interesting. I Definitely recommend reading this book.

The author gave the characters personalities all their own and at the same time put some military discipline into the crew to work as a team. Never quit and never leave a fallen comrade are two things that come to mind when reading this story.
When the story line is good, the action and intrigue make sense, and the character personalities all align it make for a great story.
The way the author breaks up the book into sections makes it easy to find break points when you are so engrossed in the story that you don't want to put the book down.

Right away I was drawn into this story. Though you've just met them, and they are distinctly original, the characters seem familiar like a family member or an old friend. Though we all know the conventions of science fiction today, this crew and their adventures are a real treat. Very poignant and touching at times, and startlingly unpredictable at others. Really enjoyed the trip, and will read more for certain.

This js great story, lots of action, interesting world building, good character development, lots of drama.

My only real complaint is how dark things are. The story starts with a lot of death and tragedy (understandable for backstory) then takes a hard turn with more death and pain, followed up by the main story carrying on the suffering and death. There are very few happy endings, most of the characters end in pain and suffering. The main crew has a dark twist to them as well.

Ok. I like reading about space marines killing aliens and trying to save the universe or whatever. I even like reading about Spacers who want to kill the most vile villan(s) in the universe. But its nice not to have to read that stuff all the time. Most of the hundreds of sci fi books Ive read have that plot. Not this one. Lets just say Jack and his crew have better things to do, like save the sol system from a bad corp and an ai that doesnt want to kill all humanity. Anyway, thats what this book is about. Its a good story and I enjoyed it. I also like the people who constitute Jacks crew. Its really all about the people, whether or not you can relate. Enjoy...

This was a good story marred by horrible grammar and syntax. The author seems to have no concept of proper English. I lost count of the number of times the crew stated they should “lay low”. Any half decent editor would have corrected this to “lie low”. She also appears to have no concept of what an adverb is, i.e. a word that modifies a verb. Most “modern” (and young) sci-fi authors suffer from a distinct lack of English writing skills. They also don’t recognize the value of using an editor, other than their own unqualified selves. The classics by Asimov, Heinlein, etc. never displayed these deficiencies. Today’s books are churned out as quickly (NOT FAST) as possible with no thought to the quality of writing. For those of us with a passing knowledge of English, the most engaging story can be brought low by juvenile writing. Ms. Aukes needs to up her game.

I'm not often surprised when I pick up a book to read. This was nothing like I expected to be. Not only extremely well written, but the author puts you right into the story. I liked where she divided the book into parts to show the different parts of their lives. It has action, intrigue, tenderness and it is almost impossible to put down until the next day. This is positivity a don't miss book.

I found the story to have a few elements that made it different to the run of the mill sci-fi. I have read a bit of Rachel's work and she is becoming a staple author of mine as I like the style of storytelling that she has. I will say it had a slow start IMO but as I got into the story I could see why and the rest was very enjoyable. So easy sci-fi and a couple of hours to spare you will enjoy the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome read, much better that the advertising suggested

This was the first book of the authors that I have read, and it being branded Military SiFi almost prevented me from reading it, I am glad I read it, and will be reading many more of her books. It is very well written with lots of excellent relatable characters, someone for everyone, and an excellent story that makes you look for more volumes based on excellence as opposed to a story being half told. I was refreshing to have an artificial Intelligence (even an Alien one...lol) portraide as being a positive influence on humanity instead of the more tyical 'them vs us'. king forward to reading m.
