- Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2025There's so much I could say about this. My kids are 6. We started choosing characters and picking out a quest last night. Before noon, today, they were both asking to play "the book game". My youngest had questions before we sat down and got started. "Daddy, who are the characters? What do they do?". I got to explain to them that they are the characters and that they get to make the decisions. They were both excited about that. Very excited. We played four hours straight! We're taking a break now to eat but I wanted to say thanks to the creators and all the reviews, because I finally get to DM for them. We're having fun together and the game is easy to understand. There's really no chance I can make it over complicated or struggle trying to make it easier. Half the day played so far, no complaints from anyone and they're ready to get back to it! I learned two things today. First, my kids are tabletop pros already. Second, this is an amazing game book and I'm sure I'll be buying expansions soon.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2023This has been a fantastic find. I knew nothing about this series or the author before stumbling across this. This gamebook delivers on the promise of being easy to jump into. I'm currently running through the adventures with my family, who with the exception of myself, none of which have much or any experience with roleplaying tabletop style games. I could see their eyes literally glass over when I was reading the handful of beginning rules out-loud, but once we actual started playing, they jumped in with both feet. Lots of smiles and surprising moments all around. The audio clips accompanying each area on the maps are excellent and really help to build atmosphere.
D&D or Pathfinder this is not, and if you like lots of nuanced rules and stats, deep customization of characters, tons of treasure, etc., you may not enjoy this. But if you don't have a great deal of time to play in your day to day life, you enjoy roleplaying against a myriad of choices for any given action, and you have kids of various ages playing, this is going to be an excellent purchase for you and your family. There is going to be some replayability for each adventure in the book as well. Lots of choices to make that affect the outcome of any given encounter or map area, with a lot of decisions being influenced by the roll of a D4 style dice. Each playthrough could be somewhat different even without changing anything on a given adventure map.
Stop reading already, and purchase this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2021This book is wonderful. I play with my teenagers who are big D&D and MTG players. They love Weirding Woods as a light play (light compared to a full D&D session, that is) - easy to play, engaging, with challenging quests. They ask to play again and again, and they borrow it to play with their gaming friends. I also use it with my third-grade students - it's a perfect fit for a small group in the classroom. It's helping them develop decision-making skills and confidence, though they just think it's the most fun they get to have in school. We love it and will definitely get the other books in the series!

- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2023This was a well liked Christmas present.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2021Finally got to play w/ my 11 year old boy. We had a blast. High adventure with interesting and unexpected decision points and exciting outcomes. For our first RPG, the mechanics took a bit of figuring out, but we went with the “rule-of-cool” when we were uncertain about what was “technically “ correct.
We are hoping to get into Dungeons and Dragons, but lack the experience, schedule, and circle of players to get that serious about an RPG just yet. The ability to play solo or in small groups, as well as the fact that a quest can be completed in one “session “ (in our case 2.5 hours) makes it an excellent entry-level RPG.
To make game-play easier, I printed a bunch of stat sheets (one for each archetype plus a few blanks) pre-filled with the basic stats as outlined in the book and laminated them for re-usability. I also printed out the “rewards” so users can have a copy in front of them because I felt that sharing the book between players and keeping track of the rewards would be too difficult otherwise. Finally, I made a copy of the specific map for the adventure we selected, so we didn’t have to mark up the o e in the book.
I believe that game play would have been much more cumbersome w/o these preparations, but in the future I will only have to make a copy of the correct map.
The included soundscapes and narraration are absolutely not needed to play the game, but they do add an element of theater and atmosphere to the game play.
Overall, I am super-happy with this game and excited that our 14 year-old is already asking to join in next game ( she turned down the opportunity to play tonight and apparently regretted it!).

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect fun for kids!
My daughter is only six and she adores these books. We play them almost every evening... that's countess hours of fun. So it represents extremely good value for money. Great for quality time with your kids, great for expanding their imagination, great for avoiding screen time, and simply great questing fun. It's very much rules light so its very simple for the adults to run the game for younger children. And the soundtracks really add to the atmosphere and playing experience. Buy this, you won't regret it. Top marks!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Ballad of Dr. Buggles
It seemed like every other day in the Crow's Nest Inn, until a concerned landlord asked Dr. Buggles (Scientist - played by me) and Redbeard McTavish - (Highlander - played by my 11 year old son) to help him cure a werewolf plague. We were to find some blood stones, bless them in the church and take them to the spring to cleanse the plague from the waters.
McTavish was quick off the mark, immediately finding equipment to make him strong enough to best many foes in the game. I however had the power of SCIENCE so nothing could stop me!
McTavish quickly found the stones, the chapel and the stream we needed, gaining a Troll pet along the way to help him. Dr. Buggles, always one for experimentation, drank some poisonous water, vomited and had to rest up for a while. He then found himself in a glade hiding from a werewolf who subsequently covered him in blood as it killed a nearby deer. Some deer chunks went in his eye, reducing his ability to fight. Stumbling into a fairy glade, no fairies appeared no matter how long he waited (I suspect by this point the sight and smell of Dr. Buggles was quite off-putting). Two gnomes took pity on him and gifted him a rock instead of the gleaming jewels they held. He ended up calling it "Mr. Roundy". He thought it was a way better pet than McTavish's Troll. Certainly better house trained. Then, a nearby spring offered a place to wash away the vomit, blood and despair, but he tainted the water with his funk, making it undrinkable for the local populace.
Meanwhile McTavish had completed the quest and saved the town and was now at home resting with a sandwich. Dr. Buggles emerged from the wood bedraggled, having been next to useless the entire quest, even bolstered with the power of SCIENCE!
All this from a book, some dice a couple pencils and some great audio to listen to. Absolutely worth every penny. If you're looking into RPG introductions for kids, this is quite possibly the best place to start. Well written and produced with a beautiful old school feel to it. We had a fantastic time, and my son wants to play again ASAP!
10/10 - would SCIENCE again.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Story Telling Role Playing Game
As a family we've been in love with The Storymaster's Tales and Weirding Woods for a couple of years.
This latest version of the game will serve us as a travel version of our favourite game, but this one book is literally everything you need to play the game.
For those who have not come across this title before it has brought adventure and laughter to three generations of our family. It has a rare quality to allow us all to play and enjoy it together.
The fairytale and mythology inspired world is wondrous enough to want to visit it, while threat levels and scares are not such as to upset young children nor bore the adults.
The quests are exciting, the encounters are entertaining and a healthy dose of humour is woven in too.
Whether you play as a witch, a huntsman, a pirate, a princess, a lost child or something else, this game is an immersive way to spend an hour or two with friends and family of any generation.
For a boxed game to be transformed into a single book and genuinely be able to say you don't need anything else but a pencil is incredibly clever and resourceful. For our family it is an excellent way to take Weirding Woods on holiday without worrying about losing pieces, for new players it provides an excellent value for money way to experience this charming game.
Anyone thinking about it, should take the plunge and give it a go. It's enormous fun!

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME book if you’re looking to run a quick solo adventure for yourself!
I fell in love with the concept of these books the moment i found out about them.
To the point where i knew i was going to buy it after trying to demo PDF, so i printed and laminated a map of that same adventure, so i could continue it with the full experience once my book arrived.
I wasn’t let down. At all!
The system in place is both easy to learn, as well as deep enough to not be a “baby’s first choose your own adventure book” type of thing.
It walks this perfect middle ground.
Both perfect for kids (and adults, like me) who want to start adventuring solo, or for anyone who simply doesn’t have time to go through all of the prep needed for something like D&D…. Its also a bit of a head scratcher to run that solo. Theres a reason people constantly joke about “you’ll need friends”
With this book, you dont!
Playing with others can definitely make this game better,
But to play solo….. this is perfect for me.
Didn’t want anything confusing, didn’t want anything drawn out for so many hours.
Some extra thoughts….
-The art is wholly unique, I’ve never seen anything in this style before. Its gorgeously rugged. I think the black & white prints allow the player to inject their own imagination onto the scenario. Is the Baba Yaga wearing a black cloak? Or purple? Thats up to how you imagine it….. love it.
-The soundscapes for this book sound great and add a nice atmosphere to my dice rolling shenanigans. the eerie sounds add tensions to those low health moments.
- all-in-one style of the book so the cards are just an added luxury if you choose to buy them is BRILLIANT. Had my fingers crossed about that. Might just buy them in the coming weeks, along with the expansion book.
-I’ve come up with my own way to generate random numbers for a table list of the items in this book. I roll 3d10 and -2 (since theres 28 items). I roll, flip to the corresponding items, and away we go.
Smedley GAWESOME book if you’re looking to run a quick solo adventure for yourself!

Bought for Xmas solo time. Already played and it does what you would expect.
