An elf costume, a pair of lacy knickers, and a Christmas charity auction might make Sam’s Christmas wish come true. When sweet barista, Sam, agrees to be a ‘slave’ in a Christmas charity auction, he’s thrilled to be bought by the man he’s had a crush on for the last three months.Theodore is everything Sam is looking for in a man: older, authoritative, and caring. Unfortunately, Sam isn’t the most forward person when it comes to telling men he likes them. Wearing a sexy costume allows him to be a much flirtier version of himself, but can a naughty elf tempt Theodore into bed?As their relationship intensifies, Sam finds something in Theodore he didn’t realise he needed: a man he wants to call his Daddy. But Theodore isn’t out of the closet, and whilst Sam is happy existing in a bubble in the run up to Christmas, he knows that can’t last forever. Can Sam risk giving his heart to a Daddy who might not ever be able to hold his hand in public, let alone commit to him? What Works For Us is a Christmas-ish romance with an age-gap relationship, lacy underwear, role-play, Daddy kink, a smidge of hurt/comfort, and a guaranteed happy ending.

This is a wonderful Christmas story. Theodore is a serious, handsome older man. He gets his coffee every morning and tries to ignore the cute, sweet barista. Sam works the morning shift and gets giddy every time he sees the sexy older man come in the door. They are both trying to keep their excitement to themselves. Theodore is still firmly in the closet. Sam is a young man looking for a stable relationship. Both their lives begin to change when Sam becomes a naughty elf. I loved this book. This relationship is sweet, funny and not meant to last. But it becomes more than either one could've imagined. I HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!!!!!

I feel like the cover of this book doesn’t do it justice. This book was a little sad, super kinky, super sweet… a little heartbreaking. I adore Colette’s writing and this will definitely go on my favorites list. My only niggle and why I didn’t give it 5 stars was how the last 15% was rushed. There was a lot of emotional/relationship work through that needed to happen and I felt like it was rushed in order to finish the book. But still, the HEA was well worth it. What a fun little sweet kinky story. 💜

Damn, what a ride. I started this book yesterday and only total exhaustion had me put it down. It's kinky, it's endearing and it's a whole lot of sugar coated sweetness. I loved the age gap and can totally understand why it could be an issue. But I loved that side characters, who I thought to be assholy, turned out to be more understanding and helpful. Couldn't put it down.

Letting go of societal superstitions and one’s personal ghosts are trying for anyone. These releases are complicated when generational differences come into the fore. This story deals realistically with the fears and joys in both generations.

Sam was just awesome throughout this story... Theodore seriously took some getting used to.. but he grew on me... loved the realism of the 6th month gap till the reunion!

I’ll start with narration. I’m a huge Dan Calley fan and every time I see he’s narrating something, I get super excited. So I leapt at the chance to review this book and I wasn’t disappointed.

I’m not a huge Christmas fan, but the right book can put me in the holiday spirit and this was that book. Sam has a huge crush on the man who comes in his coffee shop every day and who orders the same drink every day and who doesn’t notice him…every day. Heck, he doesn’t even know if the man is gay, but the man is ringing all of Sam’s bells. When his co-worker coerces him into volunteering at a slave auction, Sam is reluctant but it’s for a good cause.

Theodore has noticed Sam. And has done his level best to ignore the much-younger barista. Afterall, homosexuality is a sin and even though his parents are dead, that doesn’t stop him from hearing their voices in his head. Their banishment of a beloved uncle has always resonated in his mind, and he just can’t get past the old religious claptrap that tells him he’s a bad person for being attracted to men.

So what happens when he shows up at the slave auction and his wet dream is up for auction? Well he bids of course. And spends a ton of money to secure someone to clean his already spotless house.

Sam is going to take advantage. He shows up in the most audacious elf costume and prances around, hoping to catch Theodore’s attention. And he does. Spectacularly. One night isn’t enough but Theodore is obsessed about what his co-workers and neighbors will think and Sam doesn’t want to be in anyone’s closet. So despite the naughty elf persona, he finds he can’t stay.

Theodore realizes he’s going to have to change if he’s going to win Sam back. Because he can’t be a true Daddy without his boy.

I have to say I enjoyed this book. It had a few little BDSM-light scenes, plenty of sexy times, and some real moments of introspection for both characters. So light at times and a little darker at others. But it’s a romance and I got my happy ending. I’m so glad I listened to the audio.

Oh, and I loved Prince the kitty.

Sam has had a crush on the older man that he serves coffee to every morning but he doesn’t think he has any chances with the seemingly uninterested man. That is until a favor for a friend lands and a sexy little elf costume right into the mans lap.

Theodore can’t help noticing Sam but he’s in the closet and is used to nameless and emotionless hookups in hotel rooms. A chance at an auction is about to change that for him.

Sam and Theodore were smoking hot together. The chemistry between them was explosive and that very much so carried over into the bedroom. But, between all that sexy times and feelings there is angst. Theodore has problems he needs to work with accepting himself — but will he be able to so Sam and him can get their HEA?

I LOVED this book. Age-gap, pining, kinky sex for days, angst, pining and that sweetness that just ties it all together. This was definitely a win for me.

    4 kinky stars!

Ok where to start did I like the book oooh yes I loved it, but for a completely different reason to why I thought when I started, I thought this book was going to be a sweet fluffy Christmas book, young guy dresses as an elf and is auctioned off, is brought by a older man they fall in love etc, which is fine and I would have been happy with that. But instead it was a deeply moving story, I want to write more but I am worried I will spoil it.

I loved the realism in this story, the MC’s were strong characters and the friends and Sam’s brother were fantastic. Highly recommend this book

3.0 out of 5 stars Kinky romance for Christmas

Sam, a naughty elf, was bought by Theodore at a charity auction. The role play and the lacy dress really did it for them and they started exploring new kinks- kitty play, daddy, Randy Santa... But the issues are aplenty between them - the huge age gap, Theodore is still in the closet and Sam's parents who are wary of the old guy.

I liked the beginning, but got bored by about 40%. Even though the kinks are interesting,I felt they got on too fast and it all sounded a bit mechanical maybe... Also Sam was adamant that he will not pressure Theodore out of his closet and then broke up with him a few days later demanding them to be out!

Anyway, I finished the book. It's an okay read. The writing could have been better.

Funny, sweet and so endearing (& that's just the first few chapters!)

I found this story and these characters so endearing!! This story lifted my mood and gave me all the feels! I loved both Sam and Theodore. While they each have their flaws, troubles, and desires, Colette balanced all their nuances perfectly!

I felt for troubled and closeted Theodore and his internalized homophobia. Colette took care to address this and slowly brought Theo out of his shell and allowed him to challenge his upbringing and eventually find peace in himself.

Sam was just adorable! He had moments of sass that was just adorable but his soft and shy nature was what endeared him to me. I loved that he tried to take the lead and put himself out there even though he was scared and it when against his submissive desires but it balanced so well with Theo's needs and allowed for intimacy and their unique connection to flourish.

While set at Christmas, I would happily dive into this story at any time of year! If you'd like a book with a little kink and a lot of feels then look no further! I loved it!

    Thanks for reading!

One of the better books by Colette Davison. Even though a lot of Theodore and Sams scenes together were sex scenes you could actually feel their connection, which I find a lot of her books are missing. It could have gone deeper outside the bedroom but overall not bad.

I absolutely loved this book, read on KU and then immediately purchased it. I actually found it to be a really sweet and emotional read. Theodore is totally closeted and very repressed due to his toxic family and Sam is absolutely adorable and responds so maturely to Theodore's issues. Together they begin to explore roleplay and grow very close, very quickly. All is not smooth sailing though. A really beautiful book which I know that I will reread frequently.
