'What a storyteller Rachel Abbott is.'Cara Hunter

He played by the rules – until the only rule that mattered was survival.

Recovering from a gunshot wound that nearly cost him his life, DCI Tom Douglas isn’t focused on himself – his concern is for his brother Jack, who seems to have vanished without a trace. Jack’s past is as dangerous as it is complicated. Years ago, he faked his own death to escape an organised crime group, and ever since, he’s been living in the shadows, always one step ahead of those who want to hunt him down.

Now, Tom’s worst fears are coming true. Has Jack’s past finally caught up with him? And what does that mean for his family?
Tom has to find them, but the answers he seeks are hidden in a brutal underworld - one more threatening than anything Tom has faced before.

With time running out and his own life on the line, Tom must decide how far he’s willing to go and how much he’s prepared to sacrifice, knowing it will mean crossing a line he swore he never would.

But there is another player in this game – one who will stop at nothing to find the answers she seeks. And if Tom makes the wrong move, he, and everyone he loves, will lose.

He’s spent his life chasing criminals. But to save his family, he might have to become one.

Absolutely love the Tom Douglas series! Could not put this book down. Hoping it’s not the last of Tom and Jack

Rachel Abbott continues to release consistent 5-Star thrillers! As a longtime reader of Abbotts (10+ years), the release of a new book generates much excitement… but a new Tom Douglas thriller always takes the cake! I don’t want to give any spoilers, but I will say I was elated to see the brothers working together. Rachel has been able to produce story after story that keeps Jack’s story intertwined with Tom’s…
Preparing the reader for “whatever is takes”. I can’t wait to see what the future of the Douglas brothers holds!

I've read all the books in this series and can say this one was one of the best. I totally enjoyed it until the end. So I don't ruin it for others I'll just simply say I didn't like how it ended and wish it could have ended differently.

This is the most difficult review I've ever had to write. I am a huge fan of Rachel Abbott's Tom Douglas series—I have enjoyed reading every single one of the preceding volumes. To my great dismay, the 2025 model turns out to be a colossal disappointment. Rather than the usual Manchester-based psychological thriller, Abbott instead serves up a novel full of espionage, drug dealers and the Mafia. Thrusting the reader into a convoluted art-heist saga in Venice involving Tom's usually elusive brother Jack, Abbott's 12th book in the series is consumed with themes of surveillance, counterintelligence, phone tracking and other marvels of the high-tech digital universe. If spy novels are your cup of tea, you are welcome to it; I was bored out of my mind. There are innumerable organized-crime heavies chasing after cocaine, and a double-agent "fixer" trying to solve the mystery of her own lover who mysteriously vanished. (Her character fills the role of "first person narrator in alternating chapters," which is consistent with this series.) Abbott spends an eternity focusing on Tom and Jack discussing potential plans about what to do to get the latter's kidnapped family sprung from their captors. In the book, our hero—Tom—finds himself having to commit so many (admittedly victimless) crimes that he becomes the book's antihero. And Jack—usually a bright spot in the series' occasional cameos—falls completely flat competing as a main character. The point of the book is that sometimes you must do "whatever it takes" to pry a loved one out of a jam, but for a book that starts with Tom recovering from a gunshot wound, all I wanted was for him to do his usual great police work, not matching wits with people named Renzo, Contarini and Rukavina and being left with a ruined soul because of his transgressions. I doubt I will completely give up on this series—assuming it continues—but man, this was a total slog for me.

If you’re a fan of gripping thrillers, Rachel Abbott’s latest novel, Whatever It Takes, is a must-read! As someone who absolutely loves Rachel’s work, especially the Tom Douglas series, this book truly stands up to her stellar reputation. From the moment I started, I was hooked and found myself completely absorbed until the very end.

Whatever It Takes delves into themes of perseverance, morality, and the lengths one will go to achieve justice. The book's message is both inspiring and thought-provoking, encouraging readers to reflect on their own values and decisions. The resolution of the story reinforces the importance of integrity and determination, leaving a lasting impression long after the final chapter. Rachel Abbott has a knack for creating compelling characters and intricate plots that keep you guessing, and Whatever It Takes is no exception.

A huge thank you to Black Dot Publishing and Rachel Abbott for sending me an advance copy of this fantastic book. I was genuinely sad when I finished it and can’t wait to dive into her next release, whether it’s another installment in a series or a brand-new standalone. If you haven’t picked up one of Rachel’s books yet, now is the perfect time to start!

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW! A must read book!!!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 14, 2025
What a fabulous page turner of a read! Rachel, thank you.
I was so looking forward to reading about Tom & Jack's adventures in this novel. Tom is on extended leave after an injury at work that nearly cost him his life. Jack always finds a way to get in contact and Tom is worried and decides to look for Jack. Tom finds Jack in Venice where the brothers find themselves on a dangerous journey with serious decisions to make. For Tom, this includes actions which are against all his instincts as a serving Detective Chief Inspector and he struggles with his conscience to make the right choices. Family is everything to the brothers who find themselves dealing with the Mafia, organised crime gangs, drugs, kidnap and theft.

Rachel’s writing style is excellent, descriptive with a clever plot. The character development is wonderful with twists and turns abound. The chapters are short and sharp and you whizz through the pages.

I loved this book and would definitely recommend it.
A 5 star rating all the way!!

Die Spannung geht also weiter.

5.0 out of 5 stars beautifully written

This is a lady who truly knows how to craft a good book. As we were all taught at school a story must have, a beginning a middle and an end. So many writers rush to the ending, leaving the reader to wonder what happened to this or that character. Rachel always finishes her books well. I enjoyed this one so much as I have with all of her books and I am looking forward to the next one.

I've really enjoyed this series. I found this book to have a bit of a slow start but once the action started I couldn't put it down. The ending was a bit of a surprise & I hope it's not the end for DCI Tom Douglas. I guess we'll have to wait & see.
