MIKE NASH
A highly talented detective, he was a rising star in the Metropolitan Police. Following a particularly gruesome case involving a sadistic serial killer, Nash turns down the chance of promotion and heads back to his native county of Yorkshire. He hopes that returning to his roots will bring peace of mind. However, although the pace of life seems gentler, the crimes prove no less horrific. His skills are tested to the limit by a series of violent crimes that threaten to ruin his plans for a more relaxed lifestyle. Nor is his secret ambition to settle down made any easier by his one weakness, a seemingly unquenchable thirst for female company. That is, until . . . ?

LOCATION
The books are set in a fictional rural North Yorkshire with a scattering of market towns, many small villages and countryside that changes from high moorland with dramatic crags, mountain tarns and sparse vegetation, to the gentler, lush agricultural land lower down the valley that is bisected by the river Helm. The town of Helmsdale is where Mike Nash and his team are based, in a sub-division of their headquarters in the larger town of Netherdale. Further to the west is Bishopton, also part of the hub our detectives cover.

What Lies Beneath by Bill Kitson was not one of those average happy “British Detective Inspector Solves Crimes in a Lovely Sleepy Village” novels. No, this tale is dark. DI Mike Nash, is as flawed and lovable as they come. He is likable and believable.
The story itself was sometimes hard to read because it brings to light the horrors of what evil men are capable of. Once you start reading this book, block off some time because you will need to know how it ends.

The beginning of this book was not promising. I felt the author did too much telling and not nearly enough showing. Also, the story switched from place to place, group to group with no forewarning. However, about fifty pages in I was sucked into the well-plotted and increasingly well-characterized story and simply could not put the book down. I will definitely read the next book in the series. I did think the final two paragraphs of the book wound things up a little too neatly, but that's a small thing. A really strong first book, with promise of an intriguing series. (One research error: in one place "the room smelled strongly of carbon monoxide." Carbon monoxide is odorless. That should have been caught and corrected.)

I started this late in the evening. I finished it very early the next morning. I could not put it down. Could not. I was drawn into the characters and the story line just increased at such a swift pace, it was breathtaking. The heroes are flawed and determined and completely believable. The bad guys are terrifying. Seldom has a book one in a series drawn such strong reaction from me. Outstanding read. You can feel the pain in this dramatic tale, this author made it very real.

Not your usual violence but an all too common trafficking theme. Author does a great job of explaining without sensationalizing. The characters are mostly interesting and there are even a couple of baddies you can hiss and boo at like the melodramas. He uses a dramatic cliffhanger so be ready to read the next book. That’s what I’m getting ready to do!

This book had a good storyline dealing with a very sad topic. The characters were type cast and that diminished the books appeal. However, it was still a good read.

Interesting story with lots of twists. Nash is a very good detective who is also very "busy" with several women

I my Goodness. This was a fantastic page turner. It caused me to feel every emotion especially with Nash. I felt his nausea, tears, understood his list for the women. You must read it . It captures you you..embraces and locks you into the world of Nash and his comrades.

This. Is a crime novel that is an excellent read. The subject matter is not for all as it focuses on a child trafficking ring. I could not put it down it was so absorbing. Even though the matter is horrific there are spots of hope encountered throughout the.story.

But when you immerse yourself in such a superbly written book which in essence deals with child trafficking, and the dreadful consequences frequently ending in murder, it’s enough to provoke frequent goose pimples. Whilst it didn’t detract from the issue, though fictional, the victims, both deceased and alive, were respectfully detailed, mindful I assume, that people trafficking, of all ages, is all too present in today’s real world.
