When It Rains: Shielded Hearts book 8 Kindle Edition
Beto Hernandez isn't in town to make friends, much less fall in love.
His objective: Break the human trafficking ring plaguing Skagit once and for all.
When he crosses paths with an intriguing and handsome younger man, the first in years to spark Beto’s interest, he knows the attraction can't go anywhere.
Carsten Quinn wants nothing to do with the law.
After surviving years in hell, Carsten has his own mission. The only problem is he’s hiding, not living anything like a normal life. He doesn’t trust anyone, especially not cops.
The two try to stay away from each other, but their undeniable chemistry keeps them close. And when Carsten’s past comes back with a vengeance, he has no one to turn to but Beto.
Are Beto and Carsten too different and too broken to trust anyone, much less each other? Can they overcome the terrifying obstacles on their path to love?
When it Rains is a dual POV about a tough loner with a tender side and a man who's done everything he had to in order to survive. An opposites attract romance with a happily ever after. The Shielded Hearts series follows a different couple in each book as they stop killers, unravel a human trafficking ring and fall in love. Not necessarily all at the same time.

About the Author
Author/imaginator & photographer (also rare Pacific Northwest Native), Elle grew up in Seattle, WA., with the Cascade Mountain range to the east and Olympics to the west.
Elle has between three and five cats, depending on who's counting. She's lived in four states, London England, and Hong Kong; always knows what time it is, and has little problem finding parking even in the most difficult places.
Elle's new series Accidental Roots is set in the Skagit Valley of Western Washington and made its debut spring of 2017. Writing has always been a passion but not something she was able to take seriously until recently. Now her head is full of ideas and not enough time in each day.

About the author

Broken, broody, mysterious, swoony, inclusive; those are my tropes.
It’s my grandmother’s fault! Alice Lee bribed me to read with a Nancy Drew box set—and changed my life forever.
Love at first binge read.
By the time high school rolled around I’d already discovered romantic suspense and gothic romance, and I’ve never looked back. What can I say? My love of mystery and suspense started early and runs deep.
Is there anything better than a character who by the end of the story manages to redeem/heal themselves enough to fall in love? No, there isn’t.
Fast forward to 2017 when, with a shaky finger, I pressed the Publish button for the first time. I’ve never regretted it. I love writing and telling stories that others enjoy, it’s a dream come true.
What else? I love both cats and dogs. Star Wars and Star Trek. Pineapple on pizza, and have a cribbage habit my husband encourages. We live in a log cabin near Hood Canal in Washington State, if the sky is clear at night the milky way is visible. But most often I’m inside devouring yet another book!

- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2022This is the end of the Shielded Hearts series. I'm sorry to see these characters go...but then I'm always sad to see a good series end. Knowing Elle Keaton there will be another series just as good and maybe some of these will make a pass through. since I own all the books, I can just go visit on my own. I am notorious for reading out of order, when checking my other books, I have found a few more in this series that are still unread...why doesn't that surprise me? There was lots of suspense, adventure and romance in this story. Carsten really surprised me at how he came forward when Beto needed him the most. I would have liked there to have been a bit more interaction with the characters from the other books when they showed up to help. It's still a bit confusing about the two different series that contain some of the same books and the same characters. Some are listed as a part of the Accidental Roots series and others are listed as a part of The Shielded Hearts series. I think that's how I got books that are yet unread that are supposed to be before this one. I tried to be a good girl and read in order:) At any rate, it was a great story, really good connections with the two main characters and I am looking forward to more of Elle Keaton's books.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2021This is such a good series, the characters stay with me. Beto and Carsten are men with a lot of abandonment issues, but they find what they need with each other. And, they finally put an end to the human trafficking ring in their town. This is a real world problem that we all need to work to stop.

In my opinion this one is the best in the series. It’s still not perfect and has some issues but it worked for me.
We finally get to see a survivor and Carsten was a great character. I liked that he teamed up with a Troy and worked at bring the traffickers down. He’d been let down by all the adults in his life and yet still kept on.
Beto was also a great character. He had to work for everything he had and I don’t think he understood how much the team were his friends and that they were behind him all the way.
My concern was the way the guys came together very easily. With Carstens past I expected him to have some concerns etc, as there was no talk of any professional help to get over what happened to him and even being a couple of years later I expected him to have some dormant issues.
The traffickers coming down while it was a number of pieces coming together felt a little rushed in the end and a little easy.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2022These two are an unlikely pair and I didn’t expect this to be the final story in the Shielded Hearts series. But I really enjoyed this story. Carsten’s survival story alone was captivating and it was beautiful to see him survive every day, be strong and then open his heart to a life beyond all the pain he had endured. Beto was there to do a job, he never thought he’d find something worth needing to come to terms with his past of being alone and abandoned. They found each other and went through the hard times together. Wrapping up the human trafficking storyline, they came out the other end together. I am definitely going to read the Veiled Intentions series!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2019When it Rains had both positives and negatives for me, but overall, I found myself wishing it was… just more. I enjoyed Carsten’s character. I found him to be strong and stubborn in an impactful way. I also enjoyed the idea of the story plot; Carsten, a victim of human trafficking and Beto, an undercover police officer, come together to bring down the human trafficking ring that brutalized Carsten and many others and fall in love along the way. Unfortunately for me, that’s where the positives end. The book includes bizarre formatting that detracted from my ability to pay attention (it seemed to change from bold text to regular throughout the story). And I never felt truly connected to the relationship between Beto and Carsten or the story. Additionally, the fact that the human traffickers, Carsten, and his friend who unconsciously supplied Carsten to his human trafficking family all lived in the same area yet never crossed paths was hard for me to get behind. All in all, between the way the story is both choppy and meandering, and difficult to imagine in parts, I found myself skipping ahead. Had I not received an ARC for this book, I'm not sure that I would have finished it.
With that said, if you enjoyed the previous books in this series, you’ll probably like this story. For me, I’m glad it’s the last book in the series and not the first because I would likely not read any additional books after this one.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2024A great conclusion to the series! Another thoughtful, exciting, steamy, and compelling story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet enough
A low angst read surrounding a human trafficking ring. Nothing graphic just bringing them down. Considering the past abuse suffered by a few characters there is no trauma mentioned other than in passing, thus the story is actually a sweet love story. The book had more potential than was realised

5.0 out of 5 stars A very good read indeed.
I really enjoyed this series. I loved how the stories wove in and out of each other. The characters are believable and tug the heartstrings in just the right way. The balance of romance and story was perfect for me. I look forward to reading more from this author.
