One night changed everything.

When America's most beloved rockstar died in my hands, I took the loss personally for the first time in all my years as a paramedic.

Plagued with guilt, I stupidly watched over his wife from afar, only for some messed up form of karma to throw me into her life without me ever being able to turn back, because Hannah Moore was far too good for the likes of Hollywood, and it turned out that she needed saving, too.

Allowing us to grow closer through a trauma she didn’t know we shared was a dangerous game to play, but when she looked up into my eyes, begging me to stay, I forgot all the reasons why I should go.

I forgot everything else existed but her.

Especially that, in Hollywood, the truth always came out in the end, and when mine did, I’d no longer be the hero she needed, but the nightmare she wished she’d never fallen into.

From the Inside Flap

"What do you need from me?" I asked her, my voice gentle.

Her eyes searched mine. "I don't know."

"You do, Hannah," I said, taking a careful step closer. "You're just too afraid to ask anyone for it because you haven't done that before. You don't need to be afraid of asking me. Whatever it is, you can have it."

"Why can't all men be like you, Logan?" she asked, another breath going in only to cut her in two on the way out. "Why can't all men be good?"

"Don't put me on a pedestal."

"Why not?"

"I don't deserve to be there."

"I think you do."

I lifted my hand to her face, brushing a falling tear away with my thumb before I rested my palm against her cheek. Hannah's eyes closed, and she leaned into it, her nostrils flaring as she pulled in her first real breath since I arrived.

"That's it," I whispered. "Keep breathing like that."

She nuzzled into my hand even more, and I heard a soft whimper rise before she swallowed it back down and licked her lips. Lips that were swollen because of her distress, more tempting than ever. I imagined pressing my mouth against hers and tasting her tears. I imagined kissing her back to life, my palms sliding over her shoulders until I had her neck cupped in my hands, her eyes fixed firmly on mine before I used my tongue to quieten every dark thought she'd ever had.

But I couldn't be that guy for her.

I had to be this one instead.

The one who never got to touch her as more than a friend.

What an unexpected find this book has been. I was simply scrolling and happened upon and decided that I needed it in my life, not just adding to my tbr but an instant download and read.

This book was everything and more than I realized I needed today. The end had me crying like a baby. This is a story of love, heartbreak, loss, anger, my gods I think it had a bit of everything. I haven't a clue who this author is, but I definitely need more. Hannah, Bella and Logan were everything. The progression in each character was utter perfection. Especially with Hannah and Logan. They each had so much growth throughout this story. I was immediately sucked in and I was living this story right along with them. I couldn't put the story down for anything. Each new page, each new chapter brought me further in this love story. I hated Cole right along Hannah and Logan, it all felt so real. And now? After the end? Pfft... I'm just going to be over here drowing in my tears with a book hangover for the ages. This is only the second or third book in 2 years to produce tears from me, it doesn't happen often and the story, the emotions have to be felt just right to achieve it. I'm going to be thinking about this one for a while.

I loved how different this book was. It was about a rockstar but not the usual one. Oh he was flawed and selfish but steered the rest of the story, to a love like no other. Hannah is sympathetic and relatable in her anger and loss. Logan, oh my a hero in every sense and never a jerk. A truly romantic story, with real life pain that only a strong love can heal.

Wow, what an amazing read! A dramatic and emotional love story between the widow of a rockstar, and the paramedic who treated her husband as he died. This book sucked me in and kept me captivated from start to finish, it’s beautifully written, and I loved it so much.

Logan is an LA paramedic who is struggling with guilt after America’s biggest rockstar died on his watch. Trying to make amends, he watches his wife from afar, wanting to make sure she and her little girl are coping ok.

Hannah’s life turned upside down after her husband’s death. She and her little girl are both grieving, but she’s forced to do it in view of the public and intrusive paparazzi. And worse, nobody knows that she had separated her husband just before his death, which further complicates her feelings.

When she hits rock bottom, Logan is there to help her during and after her meltdown, and they develop a sort-of-friendship when he promises to be there for her if she needs anything. Slowly and realistically, Logan becomes Hannah’s person, the one she goes to when she’s sad or overwhelmed, when she needs help or a shoulder to cry on. And as their friendship develops, they fall for each other in the most beautiful slow burn.

The feelings are there, but their grief is complicated, and Logan knows that his secret will end whatever is happening between them. It’s a journey, and it plays out beautifully, with drama, emotion, realistic and well-handled angst, and I couldn’t get enough!

Both Hannah and Logan have a lot to work through in this book as they deal with their grief, and issues from their past, and find a way to keep going and claim the happiness that they so desperately want. It’s a difficult road, but it’s realistic, and they handle it so brilliantly, healing, growing, and fighting for their HEA, and I loved watching them find it.

I loved this book. It’s beautifully written, I loved Logan and Hannah, and I was so completely swept up in their gorgeous story. This is my first read by Vicki James, and I’m looking forward to reading more of her work.

4.5 stars. This one has all the feels, starting off with grief and betrayal. Hannah Moore's husband Cole is a world famous musician and household name so his death rocks the entire globe with his unexpected loss. Hannah is caught between sadness and relief, along with a whole host of other complicated emotions that she cannot share with anyone for fear of a public smear campaign. Logan Thomas is the paramedic who was by Cole's side during his last breath and carries the guilt of his untimely demise. In order to assuage some of his personal burdens, Logan observes Hannah from a distance and eventually makes contact with her. Hannah sees Logan as a lifeline given that he is in the business of saving lives, literally. While she doesn't know his connection to Cole, she does know that Logan provides a calming and safe presence to help her through her personal moments.

There's a lot of raw, palpable emotion stemming from guilt, loss and anxiety. I was frustrated alongside Hannah for everything she had to deal with on her own while continuing to raise her daughter Bella. I could also sense Logan's conflict every time he answered Hannah's call, yet he was never going to turn her away. There was also a feeling of redemption and salvation on Logan's behalf to soothe his own soul. Even if they hadn't met the way they did, I do think they would've crossed paths in some other fashion because they are the very definition of meant to be with how well they complemented each other and saw one another. Life and love are not to be taken for granted and these two highlight the beauty of that when shared together.

"I'm the guy who accidentally came into your life to help you breathe easier for a while. It doesn't have to be forever, Hannah. It just has to be now."

"But you've never loved anyone before."
"Because it was always meant to be you."

When you read a Vicki James book you know that you're going to be reading a beautifully crafted story and this one is no exception. With the intensity and depth of emotion that Vicki's writing brings this is probably her best book to date. I have enjoyed some of her other books equally as much, but the quality of her writing here is on another level. The dialogue, spoken and internal is nothing short of beautiful in parts and evokes both heart-rending and heart-sighing moments. Such was the quality
Vicki even got me wanting more from Cole. She enticed me with his broken character so that by the end, for me, he was just as much a leading character as Hannah and Logan. In the scene with his letter, I couldn't help but think how much I'd love to hear his story too.

As for Hannah and Logan, what do I say about them? Logan was a man who could quite easily have come across as cheesy and too good to be true in the wrong hands. Vic made him anything but. The epitome of a perfect, if slightly flawed, hero who I know will remain a favourite of mine. I loved his words, his wisdom and...just him! Hannah was also written with perfection. A strong woman who had forgotten for a while who she was and what she was capable of. Even in the darkest times for her character when dealing with Cole and the aftermath, she never once came across as weak. I loved how she finally realised that for herself. Of course, I can't omit to mention Belle who added so much light to this raw and intense story. In many ways, the fierce little six-year-old was the pivotal member of the cast. The catalyst for everything.

I thoroughly recommend that you read this book and be prepared to be surprised. I loved how I thought it was going to be one thing when I started it but it ended up being something entirely different; a beautiful slow build from a story of grief to an epic tale of love.

Well done Vicki James, another triumph.

This book took my heart, ripped it out, stomped on it, gently put it back together, shoved it back into my chest and I Said, "thank you".
This is a beautifully written book, dealing with very serious issues.
It will take a while to get over this one and I have a feeling it will be one of those rare books that never truly leave you. These characters will live in my heart forever.
Thank you, Vicki James, for sharing this story with the world.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dark and compelling!

I've read a lot of this authors books and have come to enjoy her writing style. This book was quite different from previous books I've read by James, it's dark and gritty from start to finish. Of course, it has a happy ending, but even up to the happy ending it's dark and compelling. Hannah and Logan are two mixed up characters trying to overcome grief and rebuild their lives. When their lives collide their world is turned upside down and they've either got to except the change or crumble because of it.
If you like your books to be more focused on the grief and pain then this is a book for you.

When I started this book I hated Cole for what he did but when Hannah read that letter at the end I cried and I don’t mean cried I mean I sobbed because he knew he couldn’t give her what she needed and when she said his last words out loud I cried some more. This book is perfectly written and it’s not a fairy tale it’s real and it’s passion. She ends up with a good guy and lets her self be happy. This book is something amazing special I don’t even no how but I read this book in a night. I couldn’t put it down I haven’t slept and I look like a puffer fish from crying so much. I’m glad I took a chance on this book and I definitely recommend it. It’s worth the read. But lord that letter she read I don’t think I’ll ever forget it because I think deep down we all want to hear it from there mouths but reading it always hits home. Thankyou Vicki James for writing such an incredible book and I’ll re read in the future when my hearts a little bit mended. Definitely read but have the tissues ready for the end. Ps Logan is a good guy and he should have told the truth at the beginning but mistakes are made but love comes through. Happy reading well tearful reading I guess x
