Willful in Winter (The Wicked Winters Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 2,913 ratings

Rand, Viscount Aylesford, needs a fiancée, and he needs one now. His requirements are concise: she must not embarrass him, and she must understand he has no intention of ever marrying her.

Miss Grace Winter is the most stubborn of the notorious Wicked Winters. When her brother decrees she must marry well, she is every bit as determined to avoid becoming a nobleman’s wife. She would never marry a lord, especially not one as arrogant and insufferable as Aylesford.

But pretending is another matter entirely. She has to admit the viscount’s idea of a feigned betrothal between them would not be without its merits. Until Aylesford kisses her, and to her dismay, she likes it.

Soon, their mutually beneficial pretense blossoms into something far more dangerous to both their hearts…

Rand, Viscount Aylesford, desperately wants Tyre Abbey, the Scottish country estate his grandmother promised him when he becomes betrothed. Marriage is the last thing on Rand's mind but he had to attend the Winters' Christmas country house party, and that's where he got a brilliant idea. The beautiful Grace Winter hates the likes of him: he's a conceited, unrepentant rake; he represents everything she doesn't want in a husband, so he's totally safe, she'll never want to marry him. They are physically attracted to each other, so their feigned betrothal will be convincing. Alas, Grace wants no part of it. Until she reluctantly has to agree to the deception.

Those of us who had read Wanton in Winter, the previous installment, had a peek into what was to happen in this book. I couldn't wait for Rand and Grace's story and it was even more fabulous than I hoped! It's a wonderful take on the fake fiancés trope. I love how the characters were written: Grace is seriously willful and doesn't fall for Rand's beauteous person or his practiced seduction. He is so full of himself, it's hilarious! How dare she not fall for him! The dialogues between Winter sisters are marvellous, as are the exchanges between Rand and his friends Lord Ashley and the ever-intriguing Duke of Coventry.

The book crackles with sexual tension, the writing is positively outstanding, and the characters experience much growth. Considering the limited number of pages, I was much impressed with how the romance progressed and Scarlett Scott showed us things shift between Rand and Grace, little by little, in words, thoughts, and gestures. I enjoyed every moment of the fake courtship but even more so when it became real, because it's entirely believable; I felt the changes happening. The rake turns out to be a most honourable man, and there were some fabulous and somewhat unexpected giggles towards the end. WILLFUL IN WINTER is spectacularly well done; pure delight from the first page to the last!

I enjoyed the 4th book in the series. But I’m disappointed that each book doesn’t pick up where it left off as far as the sisters go. The first book ended with Emilia pregnant but the subsequent books had no mention of her being pregnant or having a baby. This last book made it seem as if Bea wasn’t already married but bethrothed to Marrick. It just makes no sense in my opinion.

Crafty heroine Grace is independent and strong willed. Rand is determined not to marry but decides a fake engagement will work to convince his grandmother into giving him a property. Grace repute’s him but he manages to blackmail her into it, because he wants her although he doesn’t quite understand his draw to her. And that is the crooks of the story them falling for each other although they rather not. It’s a cute playful and at times funny story.

This is a superb historical Regency romance. The plot is this: The Duke has confiscated Grace Winter's risque sex book of men and women and tells her she must become his fake betrothed or else he will give her book to her strict brother Dev. The Duke wants to inherit an estate from a female relative and he must be engaged and ready to marry in order to inherit but the Rake Duke falls for Grace as she is the only lady who has told him no she will not succumb to his game of debauching her and playing with her love and heart. Very HOI! Ms. Scott writes with specific details for instance the Duke doesn't just play twenty one the card game he plays vingt et un Ms. Scott uses the French authentic for the time and period. The details an dialogue are all precise to the time and she makes the Regency era come alive for the reader with her writing. This romance came up on my Amazon browser recommendation and did not disappoint. I am reading the whole series on Kindle. Suggestion to Ms. Scott. The WINTER SERIES I would buy the entire set of books all at once if it were offered as a boxed set and perhaps with a discount. Scarlett Scottt is an expert romance writer. She will be a regular on my kindle.

I hated the first half of this book. Nothing happened, very tedious and boring, repetitive with lots of filler. The last half of it was better. But I hated the whole premise where the gentleman can’t take no for an answer, blackmails the lady. I liked the other books better than this 4th installment.

I just started reading this series yesterday and I absolutely love them. I am so glad I found this author. I was looking for a good historical, steamy romance. This was Rand and Grace' s story. Grace has no desire to marry a titled gentleman like her brother, Dev wants for all 5 of his sister's. Rand has been hurt before by a cheating fiance. He has no desire to fall into that trap again. Rand' s grandmother owns a property in Scotland that has sentimental value to Rand. He only gets the property once he is engaged. He and Grace hatch a plan for a fake engagement so Rand can get the property. No one thought that they would be attracted to one another. I loved the "demon cat" at the end. The naughty books were funny too. There was some funny moments too. The love story was STEAMY! The plot was clever and well paced. A lovely love story. Can't wait to read the next one!

A rake who needs a fiancée in order to get the property in Scotland from his grandmother. He comes up with a scheme of a fake fiancée and asks Grace Winter to agree to the fake engagement. She doesn’t like the arrogant pompous lord and refuses to play along until he blackmails her with the naughty book she reads. However, the more time they spend together the more their attraction grows. Another wonderful story in the Winters series. I couldn’t put the book down, it was so enthralling. Witty, beautiful and so wicked and steamy! What an amazing series so far! Thank you Scarlett!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good steamy Regency novella
Reviewed in India on December 22, 2019

I had read Wishes in Winter which has Lydia , Hero's sis. I found Rand quite arrogant and pompous. Here we have Grace who really puts him in place throughout the story. Now Grace has quite many commendable qualities but I didn't see anything for Rand. Except for his good looks and seduction capabilities, there isn't much about his personality. Author has focussed too much on their physical attraction, it would have been good to focus on his good qualities too. I loved their witty banter especially Grace's wit.
Here we have Rand who wants fake betrothal to convince his grandma about the property, he proposes Grace for fake engagement. She refuses him as he is rake of worst type. He keeps persisting while she keeps refusing him unless one day he catches her with erotic book and then blackmails her into false engagement. What could have been very interesting story is soon deviated into steamy scenes and loads of lustful thoughts.
I liked Rand in the end when he genuinely tries to woo her for marriage. Read this book for the heroine. Otherwise there isn't much to write about.

In this series the stories are mostly novellas - short and sweet. The story of Rand and Grace is intense, sweet and sometimes quite funny. The author's trademark style is present in the chemistry between the protagonists. However I would have preferred to delve a little deeper into their lives. I would say this is good for a quick read on a cold wintry night under a warm blanket!
