Winter's Waltz (The Wicked Winters Book 11) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 2,282 ratings

The Marquess of Sundenbury needs to stay out of trouble. Genevieve Winter needs a favor. What could go wrong? Only everything…

Sundenbury has a gambling problem. Genevieve has a Sundenbury problem. Namely, she has been tasked with keeping an eye on the scandalous lord. Gen has plans to open a ladies’ gaming establishment, and while she’s saddled with London’s biggest ne’er do well, he has to make himself useful. In exchange for her aid, the marquess must help her gain the ladylike polish she requires to lure in her lucrative clientele.

Max, Marquess of Sundenbury, is the undisputed black sheep of his family. With his gambling debts mounting and a ducal father who has cut off the purse strings, he needs to reform his reputation and find a wealthy bride. His plan? Take a month away from society, give the wagging tongues time to settle down, then reemerge a changed man, and all that folderol.

But he never bargained for the hellion in breeches who amazes him with her sharp wit, sharper tongue, and undeniable beauty. Gen wants nothing to do with a handsome scoundrel like Max, no matter how sinful his kisses or tempting his embrace. An independent lady gaming hell owner and a penniless lord who can’t stay away from the hazard table could not be more wrong for each other.

Or mayhap, just mayhap, they could not be more right.

    ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A woman gambling establishment owner and a Marquess with a gambling problem, what could possibly go wrong?

This was the most humorous, unique book in the series. I have fallen in love with this series and this installment was excellent. A lot of these books take place at house parties, which I love. However this one takes place solely in a gambling establishment. This was most enjoyably different and fresh.

Max, the Marquess of Sundenbury is a wastrel, rake, and excessive gambler. He has found himself in a spot of trouble and is in a bargain with Miss Genevieve Winter. Max has a lot of unredeemable qualities, but deep down he has a heart of gold - whether he knows it or not. Max was such a fun character. I like how he looks for redemption from his wayward past. He had so much depth of character, so many layers.

Genevieve is my favorite character the author has written. I don’t know where to begin to describe her. She’s tough, funny, passionate, and vulnerable all at the same time. Such a formidable woman. Probably the strongest woman character I have read in this era and genre. Her humor, particularly the nicknames she gives Max had me laughing out loud. Gen has created a good life for herself despite coming from nothing. I have so much respect for this character.

The attraction between the two is electric. It sizzled off the page. It was both passionate and romantic. Ms. Scott has the ability to bring these characters to vivacious life. They are warm, witty, and endearing. The plot was a refreshing change of pace. The idea of having a woman as a gaming establishment owner is rare. I couldn’t put the book down, it was such a page turner. I read it in one sitting. I love this series and this book in particular. Her writing just gets stronger with each new book. I love long, intricate series like this one. Although it can be read as a stand alone, I would suggest reading them from the beginning to get the full enjoyment of each book. You won’t regret it. A passionate, funny, heartfelt treat!

Max certainly redeemed himself from when he showed up in Adele’s book. He was hard to dislike despite knowing how much of a wastrel he was in the past. I liked him and Gen together, and their romance was quite sensual, but I very much wanted more. Both the hero and heroine had depths and past hurts. I wanted to know more about Gen’s art and why the duke found nothing to like about his son when he was just a boy. It’s the reason Max acts out as an adult after all.

All three of the duke’s children marry commoners. That’s interesting, but not really explained or elaborated upon. I’m certainly willing to suspend reality because I love the idea of an heir to a dukedom and his two sisters marrying commoners, but aside from Adele’s (first sister) marriage, the family’s reaction isn’t even addressed. It makes for a neat HEA, but all that certain uproar glossed over is hard to overlook.

Otherwise, this is well written with enough steam to satisfy those who don’t like to be shut out of the bedroom.

Miss Genevieve "Gen" Winter is the only female from the illegitimate Winter family, and a law unto herself. Born and raised in the rookeries, she dresses in male clothes and speaks her mind, with her dream of opening Lady Fortune, a gaming hell for society ladies only. Gen needs a favor as does the Marquess of Sundenbury - whose twin sisters are married to her brothers, Dom and Devil. Gen needs the polish and speech to lure and keep her clientele, and Max needs to abstain from gambling - his mounting debts caused his father, the Duke of Linross, to cut the purse strings. Max's plan is to lay low for a month to smooth over things, but he didn't account for his reaction to Gen, beautiful and independent with a sharp tongue and wit to match. Gen senses trouble as soon as she meets Max who is undeniably handsome, especially his dimples. Her faithful dog Arthur welcomes Max with the same ardor he favors Gen. Each fights this unforeseen attraction until the thefts and fire occur to her dream club that has not opened yet. Max is determined to help Gen find the culprit, but she is afraid of dropping those walls which are her only protection. Her love for Max makes her reject him because of her unworthy lineage. It is a fun and humorous story of privileged meets the other half and how they provide exactly what the other needs to be complete. This series is a wonderful read, but Gen and Max touch my heart! My favorite!!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, with its very interesting character! The plot has plenty of twists to make the book impossible to set down. Brava once again, Ms Scott!

Genevieve – or Satan’s Minion, as Max thinks of her – is a young woman who survived a brutal childhood that would have destroyed most people. She has become fiercely independent and determined to define her own place in the world. Max is a man with awesome dimples, loads of charm and zero luck at the gaming table. He is the scapegrace heir to a Duke, seemingly shallow but with a lot more depth than people recognize.

Max’ sisters are married to a couple of her brothers, which you may have known if you’ve been reading this series. Don’t worry though, because you can definitely enjoy this as a stand-alone. When family members arrange for Max to work off his debt by giving Genevieve lessons in how to behave like a Lady, they both end up playing a game neither has ever experienced before, and both their hearts are being gambled.

There is a beloved dog, covert sausages, a cute pickpocket, clever wordplay, a memorable waltz, serious danger, devastating betrayal, and enough passion to light up a dark world. The only way this novella could’ve been better would’ve been for it to have been longer, so I could spend more time with the dynamic characters. This was such a pleasure to read!

Schade.
