Winter's Woman (The Wicked Winters Book 9) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 2,555 ratings

The reigning toast of the Season, Lady Evangeline Saltisford is betrothed to the most eligible bachelor in London and a scant few weeks from having everything she has ever wanted. Until danger comes calling, and she is forced to accept aid from a decidedly unlikely—and infuriating—source.

Devil Winter is the illegitimate offspring of a wealthy merchant and a prostitute. He detests fancy aristocrats and has no patience for a cosseted duke’s daughter. But he will do anything for his family, and when his older brother asks Devil to play bodyguard to Lady Evie, he has no choice but to accept the loathsome task.

Evie wants nothing to do with the boorish man from the rookeries who favors growls and glowers to polite manners. She is perfectly happy with her handsome, aristocratic fiancé. At least, that is what she tells herself. Until her gruff protector reveals a side she never imagined existed. A side she finds increasingly difficult to resist.

Devil is determined to eliminate the threat to Evie and cull her from his life. But being forced to remain by her side proves not so loathsome a duty after all. And before long, protecting the stunningly gorgeous duke’s daughter is only the beginning of what Devil wants to do…

Devil Winter Dom Winter's half brother is assigned to be a bodyguard for Lady Evangeline (Evie). He is the strong silent type taken to the heights of sexiness in this Regency romance. Evie had been shot at and is betrothed to Lord Denton and is a simpering aristocratic fop compared to Devil (whose real name is Theo cajoled out of Devil by Evie). Evie teaches Devil to read and he teaches her to whittle wood while they are hidden away in a town home. Devil believes the criminal Sutton is behind the gun shot at Evie and goes to confront him in the East end Rookeries where the Wintet gaming hall The Devil Spawn is located. Devil finds out another criminal is to blame and is confronted by him and is shot. Evie nurses him back to health and declares her love to him. Damn their class differences her twin sister Addy married Dominic Winter and they are happy and in love and Evie knows she can make Devil (Theo) happy. He pushes her away but she does not relent and says the words "I love you." Evie has ended her engagement to Lord Denton and they marry. The handsome hoodlum and the lady live happily ever after. This series is excellent and I recommend. The novels are 200 pages or less and take no time to read and offer a delicious escape from the humdrum 21st century and takes you into aa era where love affairs were all consuming, obsessive and romantically perfect.

“You are a little bee buzzing about a bear.”
“Then you best take care, lest I sting you.”- Devil Winter and Lady Evie 🔥🔥

Scarlett Scott has been one of my fav Historical romance authors for a few years. Her characters are witty, handsome and fierce. In the ninth book of Winter family we hear the tale of illegitimate brother Devil Winter and Lady Evangeline. Lady Evie is a Duke’s daughter who thinks Devil Winter is an uncouth ass. Devil Winter basically thinks she has a stick up her arse. Basically they have the makings for a really great story of Enemies to Lovers. 🤷‍♀️ After threats on Evie’s life Devil is forced to be her protector and find out who means to harm Lady Evie. When force into close proximity the two learn that neither are who they let the world see.
The book was witty , lots of romance and had a mystery to solve to make the book a great read. Although you can read this as a stand-alone I definitely recommend reading all the books starting with the Eldest Legitimate Winter Brother.

Lady Evangeline "Evie" Saltisford is betrothed to Lord Denton - not a love match, but brilliant in the eyes of society for a Duke's daughter. Evie's twin, Lady Adele "Addy" is married to Dominic Winter, head of his family of illegitimate siblings, and of a gaming hell, The Devil's Spawn. While out in the park, Evie was shot at without harm. While she dismissed the ordeal, Addy refused to ignore it and is determined to protect her twin. The plan is to remove Evie from the social events of the season and have Dominic's brother, Devil Winter, guard her. The mutual dislike of these two is obvious - Evie is a beautiful blonde society lady while Devil is illegitimate and coarse and despises all Evie stands for. Neither one wants to be together in a townhouse until the culprit is caught. They assume the other is the sum of hated qualities - until each is forced to see the other's true self. Evie is relentless in getting her way and wears down Devil's barrier. But a bastard born in the rookeries can never be with a Duke's daughter. When Evie discovers that Lord Denton has a leading actress as his mistress, she begins to question her desire for such a marriage. A delightful story of how a romance begins with people from two different worlds exploring their feelings and learning what truly matters and is most precious in life!

Yet another excellent addition to the series! This book was so good! It caught me on the first page.

This book was about Evie and Devil. Evie is a duke’s daughter born into wealth, privilege, and gentility. Devil was a bastard whose prostitute mother sold him as a child. He was raised in the rookeries. Although from two completely different worlds, they collide into a powerful maelstrom.

The story was STEAMY and passionate. The plot was fast paced and entertaining. I especially liked the theme of Romeo and Juliet that ran through the book. The HEA was very satisfying. I am sad because I am now caught up in the series and must wait until December for the next installment, Blade’s story! Can’t wait!

I enjoyed this book (somewhat), but the story lacked luster. I didnt feel the love between Devil and Evie, and the discovery of the bad guy was glossed over.

I love all the stories written by Scarlett Scott! I have read one. This one had good promise with the character Devil being very intrigued and I was very excited to read this new story but the heroine in this story was not as exciting as I hoped. She seemed a snob and found herself in a situation where she was forced to find her own entertainment and decided to involve herself more with Devil because she was bored. That's how it felt at first and that might have lead to the story being shorter than other books so we didnt get a good idea of her tail of thought from annoyed lady to women madly in love. In all it was a good read. The love scenes were very steamy which I have come to expect from Scotts writing but the characters lacked depth i have come to love in her books. Not a bad story in all but definitely not my favorite.

I am looking forward to reading Blade Winter's story next in this series.

This Wicked Winters series is an absolute treat for the imagination. As we follow the Winter family through each book we are introduced to another member of the Winters and their search for love.
Scarlett Scott's wonderful talent introduces us to these engaging lively characters who pop up in the books that follow, so that there is this lovely flow of characters we have already met continuing through each storyline. Their stories are full of adventure, emotion, humour and passion.
I especially love the Rookery stories...
This complete series is not only entertaining but it also has the right amount of sizzling heat too!
I heartily recommend this unforgettable series.
  • Rekha
3.0 out of 5 stars Steamy Regency romance - good but could have been better
Reviewed in India on November 20, 2020
3.5 stars. The reason for reducing the ratings were due to 2 reasons - Devil is brought in as bodyguard to Evie. In the climax when he confronts the villan , he had no idea who Evie was and he had not intended to shoot then the question was why shoot Evie twice? There is no proper explanation and villan is killed
Second- in the earlier book when Duke learns Addie(his least favourite daughter) has married Dom, he is furious and tells her to get out. But in this book his favourite daughter Evie not only breaks engagement but also wanted to marry a Rookery bastard and there is no proper mention of how her parents reacted. There is just 1 liner that Devil waited months for approval and they married. The author seemed in hurry to devote chapters for sex scenes. Reason for retaining the ratings is because the interaction between Devil and Evie was well written. There was love, angst and steamy scenes which was done well. Overall good but could have been better

For a short novel, this is good. Storyline is good and may be would have been more interesting if the length was more...there were definitely places where one would want to get more. But for a quick read, I liked it.
