Chad has written horror, science fiction and non-fiction. Here, Wendy and Rubin decide to stop in Winward to visit their old friends. As soon as they arrive, something's wromg. They can't find their friends; it seems the town's deserted; and it's very isolated. Rubin decides to enter tbejr friend's home and almost as soon as he does, Rubin realizes all is not right. Then Rubin discovers the body of his murdered friend - things are definitely not right. A trooper shows up - Rubin and Wendy breathe a sigh of relief but, perhaps all too soon.
This is a good well-written thriller which becomes scarier as you can completely relate to Wendy and Rubin. As their circumstances of being in a strange town where something is off, with no one to help and no way to leave begin to escalate - the pit in your stomach just keeps getting bigger and bigger. My only quibble - and it's minor - is I wish the true circumstances of what was happening in the town had not been revealed so early in the story as not knowing or being unsure of the truth is so much more scary.
I listened to this book - The narrator did a great job.

We have all heard horror stories of "Small Town America." How some are backward communities, how things are not handled the way you would expect in larger towns. In this Story, Wendy and Rubin had no idea what they would be walking into when they decide to go and visit some old college friends after hearing of the death of Dianne's sister. Wendy & Rubin thought it would be a nice surprise to show up for the weekend to reconnect with Dianne and her hubby Russell. As soon as they hit town they began to feel uneasy, something is very very wrong in Winward.
What they find is a total and utter nightmare, where they seem to have no civil nor legal rights.Their only crime is being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Trooper Daniels, won't even let them speak. It doesn't take long before Wendy and Rubin have no choice but to listen to the warning bells setting their nerves on edge going off within their mind. Their only hope is that in the morning someone more in control of their emotions will hear their side of the story. This is just a misunderstanding and they will see that straight away once they are allowed to speak...right?
Another terrifying tale from Mr.Clark. He can bring about such suspense and terror with just a few lines. His stories grab you from the first few sentences and leave you wanting to read more once his story has ended.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2020This was my first introduction to Clark's work and will probably be my last. The storyline was fine, but there were too many questions left unanswered. The writing felt juvenile and banal and there was no likeable character to be found.
All in all, a cliche work that isn't worth the $10.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2019The story is similar to others.Strangers visit a town to find no one their.A cop shows up and takes them into custody...which is the worst thing that can happen. It is full of death and violence. Rebecca Ortese was a fine narrator. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2019The book starts off at a fast clip with tragedy striking right out the gate. Then the meat of the story opens up with a couple rolling into town looking for their college friends. They're inadvertently dragged into a crazy unbelievable encounter with a madman.
Pretty unique story. Fast paced. Just enough shock value to keep you interested and on your toes.
The narrator does a great job with the voices. No complaints there. Very matter of fact voice.
The finish of the story gives you a few twists and turns and feels very horror/slasher movie-esque. While it was short, I don't know that it needed to be any longer.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 14, 2018This Author has gained a new fan ! This book got a tight grip, on me then BOOK im done. I read this book, within 3 hours. Wendy and Rubin, the main characters venture out into the small town of Winward, to spend a weekend with two of their college friends. What transpires next, is some shocking, situations that seems like it's STRAIGHT from a Stephen King novel. Will I recommend this book ? Without a doubt. Why ? Because it's a really a outstanding book. There are no grammatical errors, the plot flows wonderfully, the Characters are displayed vividly. This book has all the elements that make a explosive read. I rate this book five 🌟 's.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dark and Intense
A great little horror novella! The pacing is excellent - things kick off almost straight away, and it never really slows down. We get enough of a backstory for the main characters that they aren't two-dimensional, but not so much that it feels padded out.
There are minimal characters in this too, which focusses our attention, and I am generally very partial to a down to earth, human horror story.
This story is dark and intense, and would make a really great film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tense and gripping.
Despite the “wide open spaces” of the landscape in which this novella is set, the overwhelming air it creates is one of claustrophobia as the tension builds from the get-go. In truth, it doesn’t let up for the whole course of the story – read it in one sitting if you can to maximise the impact. The horrors here are not of the supernatural variety and perhaps all the more effective for that. A gripping and fast-paced read that’s highly recommended.
