- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2024I could probably talk about this book for ages, so I’m gonna try to keep it short. I’m pretty sure I’ve found my new favorite fated mates/soulmates book, as I can’t think of anything coming close. It’s 496 pages long, but I was dreading finishing it already at 50%. I kept rereading my favorite scenes and interactions as I went, and I wouldn’t mind just reading the entire thing again right away. Thankfully there’s a second book I can start.
This was just way different than anything I’ve read, and a fab take on soulmates. The first time Kane and Luca (later called Ghost) meet, Luca is only 5 years old and already a massive flirt and just a charming kid. Kane is 30 years old, and neither of them have any idea they’re fated. They are then (by power of external forces) lost to each other for a long time. The story following that is pretty much just epic.
We get a lot of different POVs, which I absolutely loved. There was never a moment where I was left wanting to know what a certain character thought, because the author included it. I also think multi POV brings something really special to a story if it’s done well. I especially adore seeing the main characters from a side character’s point of view. It’s like we get to know them better and in a way that isn’t colored by the other MCs love for them.
What made me want to read the book initially was the fact that Luca is stuck in his wolf form for a *long* time, and I’m pleased to say this was done super well. Luca is very powerful and intelligent, and his mate and friends definitely help, but as you can imagine, not living as a human from age 5 to 19 affects a person, lol. I believe we’ll see even more of this in the second book, but saying that he isn’t the best at navigating tricky social situations is an understatement. It’s very endearing, even if he does create sticky situations, lol.
If you’ve ever read a shifter romance where you felt there was a lack of cuddling, growling, possessiveness, time spent in shifter form, all of that jazz, then look no further. I kept rereading scenes where Luca and Kane interacted both shifted and not, because all of the touching, kisses and cuddles had me dramatically swooning like a 1950s Hollywood starlet.
This book also had a really decent redemption arc for a side character. His behavior, his trauma and background, how he started to change when someone showed him some kindness and understanding, and just gave him chance? *chefs kiss*. That’s how you do it.
There was quite a few typos, and I didn’t even care. It was still the perfect story for me.
Just pretend like you didn’t see me say I was going to keep it short.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 1, 2018This is such a wonderful surprising book for me, as I am very specific about the shifter novels I read and only enjoyed a few. S.J. Himes created an elaborate world, full of magic and complex characters. The way she incorporated all the magical and fantastical elements together in the human side of the world was interesting and incredibly creative and innovative.
I also loved the way the story unfolded, it took almost half the book ( around 300 pages) for the MC to meet. This created a suspenseful atmosphere that kept me at the edge of my seat. The separate plot lines were also a great way to keep the reader guessing and reveal all the main characters ( including the bad ones). It was a refreshing take on fantasy writing and I enjoyed the way this story was told almost as much as I enjoyed the story itself.
It's clear that the author took great care into world buildup and believability, and in a 600 page book it's hard not to drag things too much or repeat yourself but, she made it all work with the incorporation of new characters and plot lines.
Each characters is interesting and unique, from the main characters like Kane, Ghost, Burke,Gerald, Caius and Gray Shadow to the insignificant wolfs, humans and animals. It was a story full of twists and surprises and it is so hard to accomplish I applaud the author for writing this complex tale so well.
Kane and Ghost's story is such heartwarming tale of destiny and love, while still keeping the intimacy and love between friends among the werewolf, especially Burke and Kane. I loved the ambivalence of some characters, that managed to surprise me with making me care for them or the changes they have gone through during the book.
This is truly a masterpiece of shifter and fantasy novels and surprisingly, that centers on the bonds of love and family, that do not always fall under the regular consensus set by society but are non the less strong and true.

1.0 out of 5 stars Rape is rape — nothing more, nothing less.
There must be some limits to what is acceptable or not, and this book crossed them badly. It’s a shame and a waste because, at its core, it’s a good fantasy story with tension, mystery, interesting characters, and nice world-building. However, the way it handles forced sexual relationships is completely unacceptable.
There’s a lot of explicit sexual content, which is almost expected in this kind of MM fantasy. It’s not something I personally enjoy, but I can tolerate it to some extent in order to appreciate the story. While rough scenes and power dynamics between partners might be acceptable to some readers, rape is rape—nothing more, nothing less.
I’m not saying that a book can’t include forced sexual encounters. Again, it’s not what I look for in a story, but it can be part of a narrative and addressed in literature. However, fetishizing violent, non-consensual sex and depicting it as something erotic is deeply problematic. Attributing any kind of pleasure to the victim during such an act is outrageous and disrespectful.
To be clear, I’m not advocating for this theme to be blindly forbidden. However, if an author chooses to tackle such a sensitive topic, it must be done with proper care and responsibility. Glamorizing rape is unacceptable, and it makes me question whether the writer is a supporter of such acts.
I would like to know how the story ends, but I can’t support an author who handles such a serious issue in such an irresponsible and harmful way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wolfkin saga book 1
This a remarkable story. I bought both volumes many years ago. I read them again and again. It has everything: adventure, fated mates, lost child growing as a pet raised by humans, criminal gangs experimenting on DNA of werewolves and humans. Why the author did not write the sequels? Wolfkin saga seems unfinished after the second volume. This is the best story (in my opinion) ever written by SJ Himes. I am waiting for the other books about Ghost and Kane.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant story
I started to read the book as I understand it was the first book that SJ had written. I enjoyed it very much and was taken by the quality of the writing.
My only minor quibble was a few typos, and one or two sentence constructions that didn’t make a lot of sense.
This is one of the few books I have read lately that actually made me cry - a veritable 3 hanky novel.
I would recommend Wolves of Black Pine heartedly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still loving this story!
After reading the story, then rereading it and rereading it once more just to be sure I'm still in love with the characters and plot. Diverse characters, incredible and engaging story, bad guys you can cuss out, a love story for the ages!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable.
This is going to be a fairly short, and to the point, review.
I loved it. Yes, there were one or two grammatical errors and a couple of sentences that made little sense, but overall it was well written and engaging with a good story line and with lovely characters where honour and love shine through. Except of course, with the bad guys; they were definitely lacking in the honour and love department.
I can see the promise of a good author in SJ/Sheena, who does some nice world building and conveys deep emotional issues. I felt connected with the characters whenever their emotions were involved.
For a first book, this has earned its place to be considered as good company for all good books of this genre, written so far.
