Wolves of War (Viking Chronicles Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 524 ratings

Killers of kings, destroyers of kingdoms. A fast-moving story of the great Viking army.
If you like Giles Kristian, Matthew Harffy and S.J.A. Turney, you’ll love this epic story of battle, treachery and conquest.

Leif Ormson is a Skald, a story-teller, renowned for his witty tales. His brother, Sigurd is a black-smith, making knives, scythes, horse-shoes and magnificent weapons of war. One day, Ivar the Boneless, son of Ragnar Lothbrok, commands the brothers to make him a great sword. And he demands that they accompany his army to England. Leif and Sigurd are thrown into a maelstrom of war and violence. The great Viking army blazes across England, murdering, plundering, killing kings and setting up puppet-rulers in their place. Until now the Vikings had come only to raid and plunder. Now they have come to conquer. Leif and Sigurd face an agonising choice. Do they seek to return to their familiar lives in Denmark? Or do they stay in England and embrace this uncertain new world of war, wealth and glory?
From the author of Land of Blood and Water, The Lost King Chronicles and Wings of Fire.

This is a very well written book. He writes great characters and there is intrigue as well as action. I would've liked some more depth to the battle scenes: but since Leif isn't a warrior it makes sense. Overall this is an excellent book.

Exciting story, fast paced & well written.
The central characters are mostly a treachorous, short-tempered & cruel lot, but I was even more struck by the almost casual references to the savagery, slaughter, death & destruction that accompanied the Vikings on their travels abroad.
    Not for the faint-hearted.

This story provides some insight to the brutality and motivation of the people who settled Great Britain. It was an age of unwarranted cruelty and yet, many men had also a wealth of courage. The historic parts were of great interest.

when a Smith hands a sword, fresh out of forging fire, to its owner I balk at authenticity .
no grinding or sharpening or flitting of grip and pommel.....
    this is page 10.
    excuse me while i overlook.

In Wolves of War, Mr. Lake has once again given us a tale of an intriguing time in Britain's history.  The Danes, under the leadership of Ivar the Boneless have come to Britain's shores; this time it's not a raid and run endeavor, this time they've come to stay. The story revolves around the quick witted brother of a renowned blacksmith; not your typical Viking warrior, and his unexpected rise in Ivar's retinue of advisers.  Buoyed by a host of wonderful characters, both fictional (Leif,Thorvald, Aebbe) and historical (Ivar, Guthrum, the Kings of Northumbria, Mercia, Wessex, and East Anglia), the reader is taken on an emotionally charged voyage as Leif embarks on an unexpected journey; one that will see him find love, and happiness, as well as a full slate of unwanted, dangerous troubles. One of the historical aspects I really enjoyed is the appearance of a younger Alfred, before he became 'The Great'.  The author has written about him in prior books, but this time it provides insight to his character; his piety, his lustful nature, his politically sagacious mind. All in all an enjoyable, entertaining read of a pivotal era in Britain's long history.  4 stars
Note - I received a copy of the book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wolves of War. By Martin Lake.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 24, 2018
Another great read by Martin Lake. I loved the cover. It was dark and brooding with the night blue sky and water with the Viking longships sailing towards you. It drew me in. Although some of the main characters were not historical figures, the story was exciting with everything the reader could want, love and war (bloody war!!). It also told the story of Ragnar Lothbrook's sons, especially Ivar the Boneless. We are also introduced to the young Alfred the Great. I wonder if Guthrum was the same Guthrum who chased Alfred into exile and vowed 'Blood Eagle' on Alfred. Alfred converted Guthrum to Christianity in the end. Leif's adventures through Northumbria to Wessex and back again were so exciting. Leif and his brother were captured by Ivar after Sigurd made Ivar a wonderful sword, of which he was a master craftsman with Leif singing the magic into it. He became Ivar's skald, spy, councillor and anything else Ivar thought of and the adventures begin. I finished reading in the early hours of this morning, but couldn't focus well enough to write this review. Another great read from Martin Lake. Thank you Martin.

Thoroughly enjoyed this tale of the Great Viking Army as it fought and pillaged it's way up and down England. The storyline was entertaining as it included many historical figures as well as fictitious ones. The action was frequent and bloody, creating a really exciting book. Am about to start part two now but it's late and I need to sleep.Well maybe just a few pages !!! Highly recommended.
