Work In Progress: A Marriage Of Convenience Romantic Comedy (Red Lipstick Coalition Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 2,336 ratings

One thing this shy bookworm never expected? To be fake married to the hottest author on the shelves.

I never thought my first kiss would be on my wedding day.

But here I stand, clutching a bouquet of pale pink roses behind the doors of a Las Vegas chapel, and at the end of the aisle is the absolute last man I imagined would be waiting for me.

Thomas Bane.

Bestselling author. Notorious bad boy. Savagely handsome, dark as sin, chiseled as stone. And somehow, my soon-to-be husband.

Marry him, and I’ll land my dream job. Save him, and I’ll walk away with everything I’ve ever wanted. All I have to do is remember it’s all for show. None of it is real, no matter how real it feels.

But first, I have to survive the kiss. And with lips like his, I don’t stand a chance.

I was the kid who stayed inside to read.

As a four-eyed nerd with a bad perm, I was no one’s dodgeball pick, but I had a lot of friends. Frodo and Bilbo, for instance. Kristy, Stacey, Claudia and the gang (iykyk). Once, in the third grade, I wrote a teen murder mystery inspired by Christopher Pike. On solving my mystery in twelve pages, I decided I was a terrible writer and should never, ever do that again.

Fortunately, I didn’t take my own advice.

I write romance for that feeling you get at the end, like you’re standing on top of a mountain with a backpack full of hundred dollar bills. I write romcoms because is there anything better than banter and grand gestures? I write because I love to create and I love words. I love books, and I love stretching my imagination. I love love, and if you do too, bring your coffee and have a seat. I think we’re gonna be friends.

One of my new favorite Staci books!
5 out of 5 stars
One of my new favorite Staci books!
Ladies and gentlemen, I am both proud and shocked to say that Sam from Staci's Player has competition with Thomas for being the most attractive man to grace the pages of my books. Holy hell in a handbasket... I flew through this sucker like nobody's business. And if you have started the RLC? Well this is basically mandatory reading, sweetheart. Trust me. I was so blessed to get an ARC of this book, and I am telling you with all the love in my heart: if this is not on your TBR and in your Amazon basket on the 24th, you are doing it wrong. Why? Let me break it down. First, ever since the moment we met Amelia in Piece of Work, I knew I totally identified with her (as, I believe, did many other readers) since she was so hugely into books and used them as her escape method. So when Staci announced that the next book in the RLC was going to be about her, I was, naturally, very excited. But let me tell you – she exceeded my expectations. Amelia was no wallflower... at least, she was no permanent wallflower. She just needed someone to give her a little push, a little wind in her sails. Make no mistake: she was sassy and well-spoken and genuinely kind, pure. Did she still have anxiety? For sure. But I loved walking along that journey with her, the journey of shedding the insecurities of old in favor of new, sparkling confidence. (She's still no firecracker Val, but c'mon now...) And Thomas. Tommy. How could you NOT freaking ADORE TOMMY?!?!?!? Tommy had one of the truest, noblest hearts of any male lead I have read about. Seriously. Tommy was so serious about his ethics, his morals, that it pushed him too far into trouble in the past. He and Amelia had very similarly matched priorities and ethical codes, so not only were they well matched, but Tommy responded well to Amelia's help since they were SO well and equally yoked. He was funny, cracking plenty of chuckle-worthy one-liners, and kind, so selfless in his courtship of Amelia, and just overall everything you'd (or, most specifically, I'd) want in a male lead. I loved that he was an author, loved how well constructed his character was from the inside out. Speaking of well constructed characters, this novel yet again featured amazing supporting characters. Of course, there's the RLC gang and their boy-toys from the two previous novels (which is always so fun to see, love those cameos!), but there's more. Theo, Tommy's twin brother, was of special interest to me the whole time. He was the stable half to Thomas' wild child. There was the Bane brothers' mother, Sarah, who was a really delightful addition... I almost wish we got to spend more time with her. She was so wise and truly a light in the book. And the ANIMALS. I love my fur babies (both real and fictional) and let me tell you, I totally ship Gus and Claudius. :) The "villains" were written so well – I really wanted to bitch-slap the main two troublemakers, so I think Staci achieved her goal of making them unlikeable AF. Overall, I don't think you will be disappointed with the host of people in this book. Another thing I loved was the conflict of the book. Without going into spoilers, I loved how this book's conflict (because there has to be one, hello!) was centered around morals and their mutual trust and respect between one another. This makes it more scary, of course, because it isn't a fight about something as trivial as a miscommunication or the like... its roots are deeper than that. My heart actually stopped at a certain point during the climactic crescendo of the book (for those who've read it: that moment when Amelia sees the manila envelope in Tommy's hands). THAT'S the tell of a great book, folks. I will leave you with the feelings I possess currently. a) That epilogue just gives me ALL the feels. <3 b) That sneak preview featuring Katherine's upcoming book has me shook to the ground and needing her story... let me check my watch... yesterday. Work In Progress is a complete novel – complete with heart, soul, smiles, and growth. Pick it up, read it, love it.

4.5 “Yes.” “Ridiculous” “Trust me” “Loud and Clear” Kisses

I looooooove the feeling I have after I’ve finished a Staci Hart novel – it’s one of the best feelings ever. And the way I feel right now after Work In Progress…it’s simply fantastic. I’ve been hooked on the Red Lipstick Coalition (RLC) girls since the very beginning with Rin in Piece of Work …the love grew even stronger with Val in Player and now…Amelia has taken it to epic new levels. At this rate Katherine just might completely blow my mind to a new galaxy…and I’m quite looking forward to it. The combination of these girls with Staci’s incredible talent…it’s just a force that I cannot deny. That being said, all of these books can be read as complete standalone's - there is overlap with the characters, but it doesn't effect the individual storylines at all. So, when I read Amelia’s teaser for Work in Progress at the end of Player, I was soooooo ready for her because there is nothing I love more than a fellow book worm – and Amelia is one of the good ones. I adored falling in love with her and Thomas, and together, these two completely make me melt. I adored every second of their story, it was absolutely perfect.

Amelia Hall Bane…my lovely little bookworm. I really and truly want to pick her up and put her in my pocket because she’s like a little book pixie that I want to carry with me everywhere I go. She’s one of those characters that instantly puts me at ease…she’s loveable, kind and caring. She’s a little soft spoken, but she’s no pushover – she does have a mind to speak (obviously…book bloggers are known for being opinionated) but she is just shy, which I got. One of the parts I loved most about WiP was her growth – yes, obviously the main focus is her and Thomas, but a side effect of their relationship is the change that comes through in Amelia. Thomas helps her so much, not necessarily intentionally, but the resulting effect is insanely gratifying. Saying yes to Thomas Bane was definitely one of the best decisions Amelia ever made…and meeting Amelia may have been the luckiest thing that has ever happened to Thomas.

‘“I’m going to kiss you, Amelia Bane.” The possession, the raw heat in his voice as he said my name lit a simmering fire low in my belly.
My permission was given in an exhale, a shift into him, a parting of my lips as my body said yes before my brain could even consider his words.
He claimed my consent with his lips, the kiss as chaste as it was searing.’

Thomas Bane…the bad boy author…he’s all long hair, sideways smirk and endless charm – there is no way to deny him. But don’t worry, I didn’t even bother trying. Thomas is a million different kinds of wonderful…he’s deep and alluring and you just want to be around him and know more about him. Maybe it’s the element of the unknown, because he lets so few people truly know him…maybe it’s the persona…whatever it is, it works for him. Honestly, I guess because we know from the start that all of the rumors are just for show, it makes it easier to know and understand him – once we know that its not who he really is, it makes me want to truly get and understand him. The talented author who came from nothing and has made something for himself. The guy from the Bronx who is so insanely protective of his family. The man who has never really been vulnerable…shown his true self…been in love. All of it pulled me in so effortlessly…I loved getting to know Tommy and I loved even more how being with Amelia changed him as much, if not more than, it changed her.

‘“Tommy,” I whispered, and the word was a plea.
He met my eyes, leaned over me, capturing me in his arms, clutching me to his chest. “Yes?” he answered, close enough for his word to brush my lips.
“I… I don’t know how to… how to tell you what… how to say that…”
“Just tell me. Just say it. The answer is yes.”
Relief and courage rose in my chest. I drew a painful breath against tight ribs and let it out. “I want you to touch me. Really touch me. I want you to kiss me. Kiss me everywhere.”
Everything about him darkened, heated up until he was crackling, his hand gripping my hip. “Melia…” The way he said my name, like I’d be his deliverance and his undoing.’

It’s interesting because you might think that a book blogger and an author would be a match made in heaven…but it could quickly go the other way – I was open for both options when it came to Melia and Tommy because…I mean, come on, who doesn’t love to have a little angry-angst thrown in every now and then. But I digress – either way…I loved the way Amelia and Thomas came together – loved their first meeting…looooved the premise – I will say I wish they had had at least two or three other interactions before the shoe dropped…just to kind of develop more of a rapport and it would have felt a little less like she was marrying a complete stranger. It wasn’t completely jarring, it actually was written very smoothly, but it was in the back of my mind that they didn’t really know anything about each other. It was too easy to forget that though because when it came down to it, their chemistry was completely effortless – it was like they had known each other forever and the bond they built while going through the whole experience and simultaneously getting to know each other was pure bliss. I think that was one of the reasons I fell for them so deeply was because they developed such a strong bond, they were friends and the romantic feelings came naturally, and I looooove it when that happens.

“How in the world did you choose me, Tommy?” I said half to myself.
“There was no choice to be made.” His big hand held my face, his own soft and searching. “I knew the second the universe put you in my path that you would change everything, and you have. Ignoring that gift would have been a grave mistake, one I don’t think I could have made if I’d tried.”

I am always endlessly happy when I read a Staci Hart novel. Like seriously always happy - every single time…she has rarely let me down and it’s one of the 8,652,940,294+ reasons why I love her and her books. It’s another reason why she is on my must read list and why I get insanely giddy the moment her books hit my kindle. My only teeny-tiny, itty-bitty criticism was the occasional overuse of the word “chuffed” - repetitiveness is one of my extreme pet peeves, so I'm sensitive to it - but it was definitely not something that took away from my enjoyment of Melia and Tommy. I cannot deny Staci's talent…she creates characters I’m addicted to, her way with words never ceases to amaze me and her novels have everything that I love about romance. The way she makes me feel is like second nature…I’m a puppet to her puppeteer and I’m all about it because the way she crafts her stories is undeniable…she writes emotion so clearly, I can’t help but fall head over heels into the story and what is happening. They’re not perfect stories, I may not always understand everything or like what is happening with the characters, but that’s not the point – everything she does has a reason and a purpose behind it and I love that by the time I’m finished with the story I am…endlessly happy.

‘“You are everything.” The words were reverent, her eyes open and bright. “You’re everything I could ever want, all I could hope for. Thank you for loving me, Tommy.”
“How could I not, Melia? Loving you is the easiest thing I’ve ever done,” I said simply, brushing my knuckles across her cheek before opening my hand, cupping the curve with my palm.’

The ending was…fantastic…perfectly timed, I loved everything that happened and the way that it fell into place. The grand gestures made me swoon harder than I thought possible and holy hold-onto-your-hats that epilogue was beyond anything. The teases that were dropped….just YAAAAAS! And also…I have seven words for how I am feeling after I finished the tease at the end of Work in Progress…Give. Me. Well Suited. Right. Freaking. Now!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had a feeling when I read the tease in the Epilogue - a strong gut feeling…and I hoped and prayed to any book god that might be listening that it would be true and with that last sentence in the tease of Well Suited all my wishes were granted and it was majestic! But…now I need Katherine’s book right now. Like…this very second, because I am D-Y-I-N-G!!!!!!!!! I’ve been excited for all of my RLC girls books…but Katherine is a certain kind of special and I’m super pumped to see how her guy handles her! #RedLipstickCoalitionLover

When shy bookworm Amelia Hall meets the polarizing and famous author Thomas Bane, and both of their worlds are turned upside down.

Thomas has major writers block, and needs to repair his image, Amelia wants to be an editor, wants to learn how to not be as socially awkward, so when the opportunity strikes and a marriage of convenience is on the table... why not take it? Neither one of them thought that things would become so much more.

Thomas is completely different than his public persona, and I loved who he really is. Who he wants Amelia to see, and as we got to see him slowly fall harder and harder for her, and get frustrated with her not believing him, I fell for him too. The reasons on why he does what he does, and who he is, is admirable. He has a heart of gold, but sometimes doesn't think before he acts, and that's what gets him in so much trouble. But the way he cares for Amelia, swoonworthy! Amelia on the other hand, she is so inexperienced it's not funny. I get why she can't trust Thomas at first, and what she feels for him. I mean, who would? He's known as a playboy, and why would he want anything more from her? But as he slowly breaks down her walls, and she sees him for who he really is, she becomes stronger and he really brings out a whole new Amelia.

I adored this love story between these two, but I was expecting more laughs, since this was deemed a romantic comedy. Sure it had some quips here and there, but it was more angsty and swoony than comedic in my opinion. I adored Thomas and Amelia's story, even if both of them made some stupid decisions along the way in their journey. They had some rough patches, but their ending, it was beautiful, and their epilogue? Amazing! Thomas and Amelia were made for one another, it just took them a while to figure it out, and a lot of bumps in the road to get there.

If you're going into this book thinking it's going to be a laugh out loud romantic comedy, you're going to be disappointed, if you go into it looking for angst, romance, and a bit of drama, then this will not be a let down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Staci Hart’s rom coms are always amazing!

This book is one of my top 10 for 2020!

This story is a marriage of convenience which I absolutely loved. Thomas was such a cutie throughout the entire book and him being an author just made it 10x better. I also loved Amelia and how sweet she was. She sort of reminded me of myself because of how shy she was.

I loved how Thomas was so caring of Amelia and how he never once took his anger out on her, even after he realised she didn’t completely trust him, he put space between them but never once yelled or mistreated her. My favourite aspects of this entire book was probably the fact that Thomas was a little mama’s boy as well as his twin brother Theo.

I’ve been dying to read Amelia’s book and now that I have, I’m very satisfied. I would 100% recommend Staci Hart’s books because they’re rom coms that are so hard to put down.

5.0 out of 5 stars I wish I could give it 10*s - Warning! Not for readers of Mills & Boon
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 21, 2021
From page 3 onwards I found myself already invested in the character of Amelia.
A "chaste" and very naive young woman, whose younger years where filled with bullying and whose only friends in childhood were her books.
In adult life, her only friends are her roomies who she met at uni.
Her love of books lead her to her current occupation of book blogger.
Then came the Adonis, aka Tommy. Her complete opposite, not only in stature but outlook.
She's actually reviewed all his books in her blog previously. Then she finally meets him face to face and the true story begins.
This is so well written. I actually regret giving some of my other reviews 5*s, as I feel this deserves a better rating than them.
There are several moments where I literally laughed out loud! Brilliant humour!
Moments where my heart ached and moments where I could quite easily have beaten the crap out of some of the characters.
Then finally joy, with the HEA.
Virtually the whole gamete of emotions.
A book that I simply didn't want to end.
    ENJOY!
