About the Author

Mel was born in Germany, where she spent the first twenty-six years of her life (with a one-year stint in Los Angeles). She has always been fascinated by cultures and human interaction, and got a Masters in Social Anthropology. After finishing university she moved to London, where she has now lived for ten years.

If you were to ask her parents what Mel enjoyed the most since the age of six, they would undoubtedly say "Reading!" She would take fifteen books on a three-week beach holiday, and then read all her mom's books once she'd devoured her own midway through week two.

Back home in her mom's attic there's a box full of journals with stories Mel wrote when she was in her early teens. None of the stories are finished, or any good. She has told herself bedtime stories as far back as she can remember.

In her day job, Mel works as PA and office manager. No other city is quite like London, and Mel loves her city. The hustle and bustle still amaze and thrill her even after all these years. When not reading, writing or going to the theater, Mel spends her time with her long-time boyfriend, discussing science or poking fun at each other.

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

Mel Gough loves writing about love – but with a twist. Nominated for the 2019 Selfies Awards, her bisexual romantic suspense novel He is Mine is a typical Mel Gough story. She needs her HEA fix, but on the way there will be thorns and fire, and sometimes brimstone. All right, that might be over the top, especially since her stories are firmly based in the real world - though not always in the here and now.

Born in Germany, exploring other realities has been Mel’s siren call since she was young. Books opened up a plethora of worlds, and soon gave her a strong love of the English language. After an MA in Anthropology, field work in the middle of nowhere seemed like one adventure too far, so Mel settled in London, which, to misquote Dr. Johnson, she will never tire of.

Mel loves to bend genres – her romances are gritty and dark, and sometimes there’s a dead body. She’s been told that her prose is beautiful yet disturbingly real. She’s curious about bygone times, and hopes to speculate about the future in one of her next books.

She was once asked “How to tell you're in a Mel Gough novel”

- You were either sick or in an accident, or you’re caring for someone who was

- You're bisexual (or your partner is)

- Your partner has unusual eyes (probably grey)

- Life sucks a lot, but then you meet someone, and things get better

I enjoyed reading this book. I found it informative on many levels from our financial assistance systems as well as a gay romance. The book setting was Atlanta but evidence of another culture was noted. Really liked Donnie and his policeman. Off to read the next book.

Donnie and Ben are both very sweet, very likable characters. Donnie, especially, can’t seem to catch a break, but remains a caring, hopeful man. Nothing has been easy for him and his circumstances are heartbreaking. From the start Ben just wants to get to know and protect Donnie. Ben quickly falls for him even as his marriage is just being dissolved. They’ve barely known each other when Ben finds himself unable to think of not being with the man.

The story is told from Ben’s POV, but oddly I felt that I got to know Donnie better than Ben. There are sections of the story where we are given Donnie’s feelings and experiences in a sort of third-person omniscient POV, which gave a detached feeling to those portions, yet still managed to convey Donnie’s situation and struggles. This is definitely an insta-love story which would be fine, but other than dealing with one crisis after another, there wasn’t a lot of time for these two to just talk and get to know each other. Ben also comes off as almost too perfect in his relationship with Donnie. They move quickly and nothing seems to throw him as far as Donnie is concerned, and without spoiling things, there are a few very serious issues that Donnie is dealing with that will affect both of them, and Ben is able to just roll with it which didn’t come off as very realistic. On the other hand with regard to his marriage everything throws him; his wife (who is not one of those horrible exes so points there) eventually telling him it’s time for him to move out now that he is moving on with Donnie throws him into a tailspin so I found it hard to reconcile these two behaviors.

While the main part of the story, Ben and Donnie dealing with Donnie’s life, mostly worked for me, there was a lot going on that was never fully fleshed out or that seemed to be set up for an arc and just faded away. Ben’s best friend and work partner Jason, who meet in the first chapter and makes a pretty big impression, pretty much disappears for most of the book then pops back at the end. Over the course of the weeks Ben is dealing with everything changing and he is missing work, Jason is nowhere to be found. Also, the breakup of Ben’s marriage and how to work things out with his young daughter seemed to be very secondary to everything else and managed to wrap up quickly and easily. Finally, there are UK terms and usage that pop up quite a few times in these two Southern boys’ conversations that threw me a bit, but as I did read an ARC it’s possible that it may have been caught in final editing.

A World Apart is Mel Gough’s debut novel and all the bones of a good hurt-comfort story are here, including two likable main characters. The story kept me reading, but there was too much going on without enough time to fully flesh out all the storylines and I think the development of the relationship suffered some for all the external issues. While it didn’t fully work for me, I think there is plenty here for a lot of readers to like especially if you love hurt-comfort where everything works out in the end.

Intense, gritty, emotional journey to learning to live and love. This story is about learning to love and accept accept yourself. To appreciate the talents we have. This story dealt with some very sensitive and heavy issues and shows how love and kindness can get us through so much.

i really loved some of the supporting characters like Ben's ex-wife and Donnie's NA sponsor. There were horrible people also and some very sad moments. i know i cried in this story.

Donnie and Ben have an amazing connection and i am looking forward to the next two books which with tell the whole story of their relationship. This book doesn't end on a cliff-hanger and it does end with a HFN feel. I am so glad there is more of their story, because i am not ready for it to end.

I've had the pleasure of reading Mel's work for a few years now, and couldn't wait to read this. I was not disappointed. I enjoyed the characters, the pace, and writing style. My only complaint? I wanted more. I appreciated a love story that was real, sexy without being crass, and intense feelings that didn't create senseless mush. I hope we will see more of Ben and Donnie in the future.

A brilliant read. Lots of emotion and fears with both Donnie and Ben. They both struggled with past addictions and illness but were stronger together. I enjoyed it, the writing was good, characters strong. Looking forward to next book.

I stopped reading this book at 43%. Medical inaccuracies. One what doctor diagnoses pancreatitis with physical examination and history alone.clearly not well researched.though I can understand the story author trying to convey. Would non steroidal drugs not be contra indicated with bleed.ultrasound would be done as a matter of urgency on admission to aid diagnosis. I just find inaccuracies misleading
