A few months ago I read ‘100 Word Horrors: An Anthology of Horror Drabbles’ by Various Authors. C. M. Saunders was one of those authors. So, when he contacted me and asked if I’d be interested in reading his latest collection ‘X3’ the third collection in the series of short stories I was more than happy to take a look. 10 well rounded, imaginative, creepy, dark tales emerged from the pages to scare, titillate, tantalize and terrorize. One tale was actually marked by evil by being 666 words long...a very nice mixture of stories from trolls under the bridge, to Welsh mythology. A quick but deadly read. Very much recommend and enjoyed this collection. I look forward to ready more of C.M. Saunders very soon.

I only found out about C. M Saunders recently, when I read his story "String" in That Old House: The Bathroom (a fantastic anthology of stories set in bathrooms which I also reviewed and which you should also read). I wrote to him to let him know how much I enjoyed the story, and he sent me a copy of X3 as a thanks. And boy am I glad! This is a tight little collection of stories ranging from ghostly to ghastly. There are kids dealing with trolls under bridges, an old married couple dealing with a zombie apocalypse, a rock band that's cursed (or blessed, depending on how you look at it), a drug trial leading to the end of the world, and - my personal favorite - an arcade that will lead unlucky gamblers straight to hell. And those are just the highlights! I got spooked, I giggled, my eyes got wide. His writing is clear, imagery is great, and he has a great imagination. I really appreciate his sense of humor, too. I'll definitely be reading more of his work and I'm glad to see there is a lot to be had!

I love this collection of short stories! Each one yanks you into it immediately and leaves you speechless at their endings. A couple of stories are a glimpse into a dark, twisted world where their few words (the author states one is exactly 666 words, which is quite appropriate) have an incredible impact and you're in that moment, feeling what the characters feel.
I have to admit there was one particular story that ended splendidly but I still wanted more from it in that I would have been happy to have an entire novel on the subject.
At the end, the author gives you a background for each story, which makes it even more interesting. It's an insight to what sparks ideas and produces what you'll read in this book.
If you enjoy great writing, original storytelling, and dark entertainment, this is 100% for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars A solid, truly scary read

The short story is an almost lost art today but Saunders pulls it off with what looks like admirable ease.
I really don't like saying stuff like "the next [insert famous author]" (because it sounds trite and pretentious) but this collection of horror short stories definitely has a King-ish feeling to it with its smart, insightful story-telling and carefully measured elements of the supernatural. Especially the last story has goosebumps potential and is of the kind that stays with you long after closing the book.
I'll definitely read more of C.M. Saunders and I advice you do the same. The investment is more than worth it for all fans of the horror genre.
