About the authors
My husband calls me a butterfly! I do flit from hobby to hobby, sometimes enjoying a few all in one day. Although I’ve indulged in tracing my family tree, poetry, painting, dressmaking, cross-stitch, patchwork quilts, and all types of other needlework skills, my enduring passion has been for writing.
‘Tissue of Lies’ is my first self-published book. This emotional family drama becomes a psychological thriller when pure evil enters the mix. Follow Julie Simpson's journey from the moment she discovers she was a stolen baby, with all the lies and deceit this implies, through to the final, unbelievable betrayal.
I’m also the co-author of 'Your Last Breath'. Take a peek into the mind of American serial killer, Raymond Lang. See what drives him to this madness and witness the gory killings he believes he must commit to finish writing his masterpiece thriller.
I'm loving the experience of writing and publishing my own work. I'm especially pleased that strangers choose my books to read, and when some of them leave a review, it's the icing on the cake for me. If you've read this little piece about me, thank you so much for your interest. May you always enjoy reading thrilling books.
When Carole Parkes and I published "Your Last Breath" in December 2015, I thought I had started down a path that would see me publish many more books. God had other plans for my life though. I remarried, moved to Iowa, and adopted three kids. The past nine years have been full of ups and downs, twists and turns. My writing took a back seat to many other more important things, but I never gave it up completely. In 2023 I began writing on a more regular basis. As my walk with Christ has matured, I have moved away from the violence and gore that made up my early writings. I still tinker with some vigilante type stories, but mostly I have moved into the genre of Christian Fiction. As my first novel in this genre nears completion, I have been cleaning up some of my older writings to make them more of a PG or PG 13 type of read. I expect my first short story to be out by the beginning of December 2024 and others may follow in the months to come. My novel is still a year or so away, God willing. My desire is to use the gift God has given me to bring Glory to His name through the fictional stories I tell.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2016Wow. Read a tiny little excerpt of this book. I had to read the whole thing. I found it here on Amazon of course! After it was downloaded, I waited a while to start reading. I wanted it to be fresh. The characters are well and truly rounded out. I felt what they felt. It's gripping, twisting and turning plot had me guessing until I knew, and I mean I KNEW everything. Surprise! They gave me one last twist. I won't spoil it for you but I will say strangers seem a little stranger to me now. I'm going to give it some time and read it again. That's what I do with books I love. That way I can pick up on things I didn't get the first time. This is one I'll gladly read many many times.
Yes! I highly recommend Your Last Breath to anyone in love with thrilling murder mysteries! When you read it, savor every moment. This is one of those books you don't want to put Down!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2016I was attracted to this book because the blurb said it’s about an author who takes extreme steps to write the perfect suspenseful thriller. Battling writer’s block he finds the only way he can overcome those blank moments in front of his computer is by actually committing murder. This fascinating premise is played out in England and the authors describe their settings well enough for any reader to relate.
Author Raymond Lang is a madman on the loose, from London to Liverpool. Each killing he performs seems even gorier than the one before, building in intensity as the story moves forward. The mind of the killer is revealed throughout, neatly interspersed with the ongoing investigations.
In addition to the depravity of the killer the authors explore the illegal activities of a corrupt government official who uses extremely questionable methods to cover up his own nasty activities.
Basically the story moves around at a good pace, although there were portions involving private detective Alex Renshaw, his former mother-in-law and her mother, family friend Jayne, and Renshaw’s daughter Amelia that carried a little too much description. It did slow down the reading but not enough to set the book aside. As that potion comes to an end there is more than enough excitement to make up for the lag.
My favorite part of the story is the delicious twist at the end. I certainly never saw anything that occurred in the final chapters coming.
There were a few repeated words and typos but they in no way affected my enjoyment of the book. For a reader of gripping serial killer murders and the crafty machinations of the criminal mind this book is a good read. I plan to read more books by these authors.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2023The serial killer is an author who will go to great lengths to finish his novel (ironically called "Your Last Breath" - makes you wonder). It's well written, so when you're in that author's head it's kind of creepy. It moves fast, and the characters are well-done and believable. In a world full of desperate would-be authors it wouldn't surprise me if a few of them went over the edge. If you can handle it, it's a great book.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2023The mind of a serial killer.
Raymond Lang is a writer. He hasn’t published yet and he is writing a thriller about a murder. He blogs for help and gets some hints but realizes the only way to get realistic is to actually commit murder. His first is an assisted suicide of sorts, and once it’s done he writes furiously. Moving to England he sets up “murder” shop and begins his new twisted hobby. At some point the victims are connected to blackmail of a public official, and to the family of a private dectective Alex Renshaw. The story moves through chapters going from Raymond’s POV to Alex’s POV.
Eventually, after several increasingly violent murders and a book so disturbing Amazon pulls it, the killer “gets away”. Later the detective has a new love interest in his life. The case goes cold and yet the story doesn’t exactly end. There is a cliff-hangerish surprise ending that leaves readers like me looking for a follow up book
- Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2019If you love to be scared out of your socks, this book is IT. The juxtaposition between the killer and his victims is wrenching. The way his mind works to lead him to carry out his urge to kill is fascinating. Well written and frightening, the author is quite a craftsman.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2018Kept me on the edge the whole way through!
However I hate cliffhangers and this has one hence the loss of a star! Sorry :/
- Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2016I actually give Your Last Breath 2.5 stars because it was reasonably well written. I read it as a favour to a friend. This book is so out of my genre; I'm no fan of works like Silence of the Lambs, Criminal Minds, Dexter or twisted romance like Bitten. If these works appeal to you, so will this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2019Your Last Breath was an at times gut-wrenching tale of an author who needed to perform the murders he wrote about in order to overcome writer's block. The use of two authors was a success particularly because the two pov's in the story were so vastly different. I found the read gripping and one of those books I simply couldn't put down much as I wanted to at times. Gory and vivid but with plenty of normal background, this is a very readable thriller and one I highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Suspenseful read!
Under the pretence of penning his debut novel, Raymond Lang is a serial killer who uses his victims to capture the experience of seeing someone die with as much accuracy as possible so that it can then be used in graphic detail in his book. The killing of his victims inspires his writing and so its continued!
A captivating and intense thriller which captivates from the start. The graphic detail of each scene, gory or not, helps your minds eye easily see everything as its played out. The characters develop really well and the storyline progresses, keeping the suspense alive and the interest high. I love how the chapters flit from one character to another giving updates on their current state of play so you see everything from each perspective. Great novel, thoroughly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rip-roaring gorefest
Raymond Lang is an aspiring author with a muse to help him over writer’s block. Except his muse isn’t a living woman, it’s a dead one. And he gets repeated blocks that only a gruesome death can alleviate. Throw in a blackmailer, a private detective and a politician and his paid thug trying to find incriminating evidence against him, and you have all sorts of twists and turns and shenanigans. When the detective’s family are threatened, it becomes personal. This is a cracking story seen mainly through the eyes of the killer and Alex, the detective. Be aware, though, that the descriptions of the killings are truly gory.

3.0 out of 5 stars There's Cereal and Then There's Serial Killers
If you're into psychological thrillers and viewing a serial killers crimes through their eyes and perspective, then you're one sick person and you'll probably like this book. It is a well written collaboration, and dare i say it, worth waiting for it's follow up book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Graphic horror
The opening chapters set the scene of brutal murders to come. The graphic details are not for the faint-hearted, and the book cover alone is a warning of the horrors awaiting inside. It is gruesome.
The plot is unique, and the main character is totally twisted.
Two writers collaborating is also unusual, and I wondered which writer was dominant as I had not read a previous book by either.
Descriptions of most of the victims through the eyes of the killer are somewhat similar, each being the most beautiful woman he has ever seen. Perhaps this was to make the killer appear more deluded.
The switch between chapters headed by 'RL', the killer, written in the first person and the chapters written in the third person is cleverly mastered and makes a compelling read.
I was surprised by the ending which left the reader having to imagine how the penniless killer managed to reach Hawaii, but his arrival there gives the potential for a series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A chilling tale!
This is a shocking and compelling read. The author has done an amazing job in creating this book.
When Raymond Lang sets out to write a murder mystery, the only way he can find inspiration is by becoming a serial killer himself, with terrible consequences for his victims.
I won't say anymore so as not to write any spoilers.
Read this, it's spine chilling, but brilliant!
