Dead Meat: Prequel to the Zombie D.O.A. Series Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 119 ratings

The brutal, heart-stopping prequel to the best-selling Zombie D.O.A. Series, a series fans are calling, "as good as The Walking Dead."

Read it for Free!

On a beautiful early-fall evening, a couple is attacked in Times Square by a seemingly deranged vagrant. An ER unit is dispatched to the scene and returns to the emergency room with two victims, one seriously injured, the other dead on arrival.

Or so they think.

The prequel to the Zombie D.O.A. series follows the events leading up to a deadly zombie epidemic, as a seemingly routine ER call spirals quickly out of control - with deadly results.

An Interview With The Author

Q - What makes the Zombie D.O.A series so special?

A - A number of things. When I started writing this series, I set out to create the kind of books I enjoy reading. I love post-apocalyptic fiction like Stephen King's "The Stand" and Robert McCammon's "Swan Song" and, of course, "The Walking Dead," so I wanted to create something on the massive scale of those horror classics. However, I wanted the story to work on a smaller scale too, really getting into the hearts and minds of the characters.

Judging by the feedback from readers, the series works on both those levels. Yes, it's scary zombie post apocalyptic fiction, zombie survival fiction, zombie thriller. But it's also about realistic characters who the reader can root for (or despise, as the case may be).

Overall, the Zombie D.O.A. series is fast-paced, kickass and scary. It's a real page turner with plenty of twists and turns that will keep you reading late into the night.

Q - What order should I read the books in?

A - There are 21 books in all and they should be read in the following sequence:

(NB: Each series (1 - 5) is also available as a box set. Buying that way works out about 60% cheaper)

  • Dead Meat (prequel)
  • Dead City
  • Dead On My Feet
  • The Dead Men
  • Dead On Arrival
  • Return to Dead City
  • The Dead Can't Die
  • Among The Dead
  • Dead And Buried
  • Deadly
  • Speak Of The Dead
  • Stone Dead Forever
  • Requiem For The Dead
  • The Dead Shall Rise Again
  • Dead Things
  • Kill The Dead
  • The Dead, The Damned And The Dying
  • The Never Dead
  • Dead And Dangerous
  • We, The Dead
  • Dead Ever After

Q - There are lots of zombie books out there, why should readers give these books a try?

A - Once again, I can only pass on what my loyal readers have said. I was deeply flattered to hear the series described as, "as good as The Walking Dead," "the best zombie series out there," and "impossible to put down." Other readers have commented on the breakneck pace, unique plot twists and unforgettable characters."

All in all, the series is fast paced, scary and, in parts, deeply moving. If you enjoy post apocalyptic fiction told on a massive scale, with larger than life characters and lots of unexpected plot twists, you'll enjoy this...period.

Q - Do readers have to buy the books individually?

A - Heck no, in fact it's cheaper and more convenient to "buy by series." The overall saga is split into five series of four books each (the prequel is included with series one). Check out my author page here at Amazon for a full list of available titles (search under JJ Zep or Zombie D.O.A. series).

And thanks for reading!

One day the world will end. Someone has to tell the story, right?

JJ Zep is a musician and author who describes himself as a vegetarian, horror-and-fantasy-fiction-loving heretic and a citizen of nowhere.

His twisted post-apocalyptic tales will frighten, enthrall and entertain you. They'll creep you out and make you laugh and maybe even get you to shed a tear or two.

You'll find heart-stopping action and gore a plenty, if that's your thing. But you'll also find humanity, heroes and heart. After all, stories (even one's about the end of the world) are ultimately about people.

JJ Zep lives in the south of France with his wife, two dogs and three cats.

No back story provided as to why people start becoming zombies or which character to follow until the final few paragraphs but talk about the ability to create a suspenseful environment! This would be the zombie series to buy in my opinion (it hurts to even think about where book two continues). Book does have some editing issues as demonstrated by this last passage (since "staccato" was probably meant to be used instead of "tattoo") but I loved the atmospheric quality nonetheless, "Betty shouted again, her voice followed closely by the sound of Carl gagging and convulsing on the floor, his shoes drumming out an erratic tattoo on the vinyl." Very good book!

I'll be concentrating on reviewing Halloween themed book thru the month of October for the second year running so feel free to "see all my reviews" most recently if you're of a like mind and am looking for some spooky stuff this time of year.

A short story I got for free recently. I gather it is an intro to a series.

Not much content here so not all that much to judge it by, but what was there was OK.

5.0 out of 5 stars A hook that's meant to catch - and does its job commendably
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 26, 2013
I appear to be working my way through everything "zombie" that Amazon has to offer, and I am mildly ashamed at coming to JJ Zep's party late if his prolific bibliography is anything to go by.

"Dead Meat" is an introduction to a wider series ("The D.O.A Series") and serves as an introduction to the writer's style and (I assume) the series as a whole. Zep doesn't disappoint and this is a teaser of the highest order. The odd typo aside, Zep's writing is fluid and his action scenes credible.

It's only a short work at around 30 minutes read-time, but I can appreciate the wider hook and as a standalone item, I can't imagine getting similar enjoyment in the wider world out of a whopping 77 pence. It's a cheap way of trying a new author, and it serves its purpose well - I just went and bought the DOA series. All of it.

Dead Meat is a short story, I read it in around 45 minutes and I enjoyed it. There are some zombie stories that are full of plot and there are others that are full of gore. This one is full of gore and the author does it rather well. In this story, most of the action takes place in a hospital and follows the security guard as he tries to make it out alive. I am a big zombie fan and I have a long list of zombie books to read, but I'm sure I'll take another look at this author's work pretty soon.

I enjoyed this taster book. Of course it was too short by its very nature but enjoyable non the less. It needs a little more depth but succeeds to reel you in for the follow up.

3.0 out of 5 stars Easy read

Quick and easy read , I will be getting the next book to see if it improves. But the book is understandable and like the odd few I've read, with this you don't get lost. There is room for improvement though. More descriptive picture building and more of how characters feel etc.
