A Dance too Far: A mafia gay romance: (Too Far #1) Kindle Edition

Love can be dangerous!

Valentin Bychkov, rising star of contemporary Russian ballet, appears to have everything: wealth, talent, success, and a face and body to match. Not that anyone can get close. Bypass the entourage and there's still Valentin's sharp tongue and acerbic wit to deal with. He may give his body freely, but his emotions are kept tightly locked away.

Max Farley's life is a simple one. All he's interested in is work, drinking, and picking up the latest in a long line of one-night stands. The way he chooses to live may not be to everyone's taste but it suits him down to the ground. He's never met anyone who's made him want to confront the demons from his past. Until now.

A show in London brings the two together. Lust brings them closer still. But if rumors of Bratva connections turn out to be true, then dangerous men wait in the wings. One dangerous man in particular, who's used to people following his orders without question.

Difficult choices need to be made on both sides. Valentin and Max need to stop playing with fire and let each other go, or face the consequences. But letting go isn't that easy where love is concerned.

And some things are worth the risk.

Warning: This book contains a snarky ballet dancer with an aversion to clothes, a little too much wall sex and an overabundance of Russian heavies.

Review

The narrator of the audiobook, Brad King, did an amazing job. Going between English to Russian, conveying the uncertainty and fear in Valentin that was hidden behind brusqueness, he really managed to bring Valentin to life.-- "Joyfully Jay"

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

H.L Day grew up in the North of England. As a child she was an avid reader, spending lots of time at the local library or escaping into the imaginary worlds created by the books she read. Her grandmother first introduced her to the genre of romance novels, as a teenager, and all the steamy sex they entailed. Naughty Grandma!

One day, H.L Day stumbled upon the world of m/m romance. She remained content to read other people’s books for a while, before deciding to give it a go herself.

Now, she’s a teacher by day and a writer by night. Actually, that’s not quite true—she’s a teacher by day, procrastinates about writing at night and writes in the school holidays, when she’s not continuing to procrastinate. After all, there’s books to read, places to go, people to see, exercise at the gym to do, films to watch. So many things to do—so few hours to do it in. Every now and again, she musters enough self-discipline to actually get some words onto paper—sometimes they even make sense and are in the right order.

A Dance Too Far is a lovely and suspenseful story that captured my interest with the beautiful cover and kept it until the final page.
An exciting and compelling storyline supports these well-developed characters. There are a smooth flow and rhythm to the suspense of the story and the interactions between Valentin and Max.
I felt a kinship to both characters as they navigated this new and strange relationship in which they unwittingly discovered themselves.
Several times I found myself on the edge of my seat from the danger and violence they faced.
I am not going to say that the antagonist got what was coming to him in the end, but I have faith that the fiction version of hell has a special place picked out just for him.
The secondary characters are supportive of the storyline and complement the plot and the main characters.
I look forward to more from this author.

Mafia stories are not generally my preferred genre so I’ll have to start by saying it was the stunning cover that initially drew me in. And I have a fondness for my Russian men.
I really enjoyed the fast lust, slow burn relationship of the MCs. Max is a playboy who doesn’t garner a lot of sympathy in the first few chapters. Valentin is a cold, sarcastic bratty ballet dancer and sparks fly right from the beginning.
There is so much happening under the surface of their developing relationship, heartbreak and hurt, manipulation and blackmail. They really had their work cut out for them for their HEA with a whole lot of angst to get there.
The villain is truly a despicable person, you can’t help but root for Valentin and Max. The suspense of seeing how they are going to get out of this alive kept me reading way past bedtime.
The instant heat between these two is smoking, with the progression of their emotional connection well paced and believable.
A word of caution. - there really aren’t any punches pulled, and the dark world of the Russian mafia isn’t hidden. There are some violent moments and uncomfortable (for me) ones that make you admire Valentin for still being as strong as he is.

Highly recommended for those who enjoy suspense, med angst and a very good love triumphing over evil storyline.

Glad I picked this book up in a sale about Entertainment from a collection of MM authors.
When Max meets Valentin he is told to stay the hell away. He was the lead dancer and Bratva was behind him. Did that stop him? No. Thus begins an amazing tale of sex, intrigue, massive beatings, and murder. In the end, Max gets his dancer, Valentin, they are deeply in love, and they are happy!
I was so worried for Valentin living the life he was forced to live. Super worried for Max's life after first beating but the second??
Excellent book. Looking very forward to Book 2.
    10/10 Highly recommended!

I think my expectations were too high. I liked it, but for some reason I thought it would be a bit more darker, and Valentin a bit more bitchier (not that he wasn't a diva enough). LOL
It was mostly satisfying both in the romance and in the crime department, but I just... ugh... wanted more.
So, I think it's just me, not the book.

I’ve had this book on my radar for ages but never got around to it even though it has ballet in it! Don’t know why it took me so long 🤨

Anyway, I like the progression of character development for Valentin. You really do see a depth to him, I mean, first impressions aren’t everything and people are usually more complex and nuanced than what they portray so I’m happy to see that portrayed here.

It’s a pretty basic and straightforward plot line. No dramatic twists or anything. So that made it slightly predictable but it didn’t make the story any less exciting. I think execution was key and the author executed perfectly.

You get the typical bad-boy-who-only-does-one-night-stands-and-no-repeats trope. You get the arrogant man trope who is untouchable. You also get the “unlikely pairing” trope. Then there’s the orphan-who-didn’t-have-a-choice trope. Pretty run of the mill tropes. But I never once felt like sighing “ahhh...this again??”

I liked it. I think I liked Max a little more than Valentin even though truly, Valentin felt like the more fleshed out character. Pretty satisfying read, for a straightforward plot. And then at the end, the author threw out such an enticing bone and I think I’m going to be reading the next book too! 😉

H.L. Day has written a story about adaptation and survival in a world of darkness and evil. A DANCE TOO FAR, is a story with two main protagonist, Valentin and Max, and their fight to survive relying on trust and love. This story is so well written that at times, the reader gives up hope that survival is even a possibility. The wicked and evil, Dmitry, is not only ruthless, but determined to have absolute control over those who's lives he has possessed. As this story of good against evil unfolds, the reader is pulled in and cannot let go until they reach the last word of the epilogue. Another 5 star read by H.L. Day. Indeed.
I am very much looking forward to reading the second book in this duopoly, A STEP TOO FAR.

I always try not to get my hopes up when reading something new. However, this book was so much better than I could have ever imagined. I was so nervous for both Valentin and Max many times throughout this story. I loved how it was realistic, no lover sweeping in to rescue or the police coming to save the day by arresting the villain. Just two guys in a terrible situation with some very bad people, taking a risk, and hoping it doesn't blow up in their faces. Now I'm going to have to read book #2, because who could resist knowing what happens next?

The story is timeless. Boy meets Boy, spans fly, s#!+ happens, more s#!+ happens, Boy leaves Boy, I'm sure you know the rest. The MCs Valentin and Max had great on page chemistry. Val was a hoot with his diva self. Don't get me wrong there's plenty of angst, drama, suspense and hot sex. A good book to read while relaxing with a cup of tea or other beverage of choice.

This book had great characters Max and Valentin are characters you can get attached to. The story line was interesting and easy to read.
Max has one night stands and nothing more but when he starts working in the theatre he can't get over his fascination with the lead dancer Valentin. The more he's pushed away the more he wants to get close.
Valentin comes across as a diva but he's hiding alot of hurt. He is attracted to Max but he keeps pushing away. When something happens and Valentin needs to rely on Max they can't hide from their feelings.
When their lives are put at threat Valentin has to protect them and he's prepared to do anything he can to have the life he deserves with Max.
    Really enjoyable read.

“Maybe you’re my karma.” - Max

Max was entertaining from page one. His instant attraction to the one person on the do not touch list was an easy guess where he’d head.

I enjoyed Valentin’s diva behaviour, hiding a broken character. Would have loved the ballet aspect to be expanded. It was lightly touched upon, as was the bratva element, generally inner monologue.

“Max would be killed. For being with me. For helping me. For loving me.” - Valentin

Few odd words, swapped between UK and US English.

Lighter read. Nothing overly dark. Sweet push and pull between Max and Valentin, with a little history of each included. 3.5 ⭐️

Anything written by HL is an automatic buy for me, and A Dance Too Far didn't disappoint! I love the diversity of all of HL's characters - I never feel like any two characters from any of their books are the same - and Max and Valentin were two new people for me to meet! There was a good amount of tension built throughout, enough light moments to balance out the heavy, and some steamy parts that were... well. Pretty fantastic. My only point for not being 5* was that the tension seemed to resolve itself quite quickly and relatively painlessly at the end. Which isn't a huge deal for me because I like low-angst (not that this was low angst!), but it might have been made a bit more dramatic.

Will definitely continue to keep a close eye on HL's releases - have yet to be disappointed!
