Put Adaptive down once you start—I dare you. ;)
Do you like romance? Me too. Action? Check please! Dystopian? Okay, me not so much. BUT. Sometimes I find a rare exception and The Elite Trials is EXACTLY that. Adaptive is the second book in TET trilogy and yet again Moynihan showcases her skills not only with emotional narrative but also with her can't-stop-reading, action-filled pacing. Plus the romance; she definitely knows how to bring the heat. ;) Now, fairly, I do think there was a bit of jumping in the later part of the book that wasn't for me. BUT the pacing continued well and the plot twists are absolute aces, so my hangups never lasted long. :D ___________ tl;dr: Adaptive does an excellent job showcasing the fast paced, romance-laden style that is becoming a trademark of the author. :D

I've read many books but the ones I REALLY love and can't put down are few and far between. I expected to, hopefully, like this trilogy but didn't actually expect it to be one of my favorites. I was so delightfully wrong. I LOVE this trilogy. I couldn't put it down. I was vested in the characters. I HAD to know what was going to happen next. I missed sleep, neighborhood get togethers, so I could find out. And it was so worth it. I love the characters and the storyline. Thank you, Becky Moynihan, for reminding me how much I love reading. It's being so invested in a series and the characters that you feel like you are there and experiencing the characters life along side them. A little escape from the world with a strong, kick a**, woman. (And her handsome new love.)

The first quarter of the book wasn't all that interesting-a lot of "walking through the woods..." as it continues from the first book in the series. It picks up after that though, with an ending that both shocked and tortured this reader. I felt like the cliffhanger came just as it was really getting into the meat and action of the story. Can't wait to start the next book in the series!

Let me just begin by saying . . . I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN. What a ride!

Second books are normally the make it or break it for most series. This book far surpassed my expectations, which is a really cliche thing to say. But it's true. I practically read the book all in one day. And that's rare for me.

The story is emotionally gripping. And the mind games? So. Intense. I don't know who to believe, who to trust. I can't even trust Lune's judgement about . . . anything. The secrets continue to unearth and only grow more haunting and more intense.

The story's pacing was brilliant and kept me flipping pages. I swear, I barely drew breath! And the writing. Gah! The writing was gorgeous.

Characterization didn't waiver. Not once. And honestly, that's what sold this book to me. Especially the middle. I wanted to scream and pound on Lune for easily falling into trust, especially with a certain character. ESPECIALLY after this character confessed their ability. My red flags were waiving furiously. And yes, I intentionally obscured gender as to not spoil. Because, OMG.

Worldbuilding is amazing. I love how well thought out this post-apocalyptic world is. And, I love that it's plunked in the middle of nature. So many dystopian / post-apoc stories are sterile and/or in wastelands. But this world teams with nature, even mutated nature that feels terrifyingly prehistoric at times. The primal nature emerging from the infected human DNA is sensorially rich and . . . downright animal.

    And that ending (!!!)

    READ THIS BOOK.

Becky is an excellent writer! I have found I’m often not able to stay through a 3 book series because the story drags or there is the relationship angst that is overdone. It’s not the case with this series. Each book is fresh and has a developing story, not just a rehash. Becky keeps it moving but with a detailed and engaging story. Well done!

Okay so in the first novel it was all about the trials, survival, and confusing emotions revolving around how Lune felt around Bren. This book is all about learning what the world used to be and what it has become. Lune was raised in ignorance to how the world is because that’s what Elite Tatum wanted. Keep your citizens ignorant by removing ways to access knowledge and information and that’s how you create power and control.

Everything that I wanted in the first book (how the world operates, what kind of time period they’re in, etc) is all included in this one. Though the romantic feelings and attractions were still there, this book mainly focused on info gathering. Lune starts learning more about the outside world while on her mission from Elite Tatum and in turn, the reader gets a lot more information as well.

I love the introduction of new characters, the nod to pop culture without naming specific movies, and just the character development that Lune had to go through.

Now I’m off to read the sequel since there’s a pesky cliffhanger that needs to be dealt with.

A heart stopping novel of hope and betrayal of confusion and sudden clarity. Lune discovers some of her abilities and falls deeply in love with Bren, but still isn’t able to understand everything and make sense of it.

The extra characters are very cool too. I love Ryker, I can't wait to find out more on his reasoning and backstory. And of course see where the concluding book takes the story and characters. Bring on book 3!!!
